“Great Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

We had a great time at this hotel. We knew that it was an hour from Yosemite valley, that suited us fine as the accommodation inside the park didn't look as appealing. We got upgraded, with free breakfast. On the first morning we left before breakfast so they let us swap our breakfast for a packed lunch which was great. The lodge has swimming pools, restaurants, a deli, all you could need. We loved the lobby, with its huge open fire. We thought the service was very good, all staff we encountered were friendly & helpful. As you would expect, things are pricer here as they have a captive audience, but overall we enjoyed our stay & would recommend & return.

This was a very nice hotel to stay at. The price was pretty reasonable and the room was nice. Everyone from the first person that greeted us to the hostess/waitress were very nice. It seemed as if it was a very family friendly place as it had a lot of activities. It would have been nice if we could have spent more time there to see all that the hotel had to offer. I would definitley recommend for a family that plans to stay in Yosemite.

One stay. One night. Two families (one from abroad, one local).

The location is about 5min. drive from the entrance of the park. This means you are about 50min-1hr. from the valley floor depending upon traffic (no passing for much of the attractive drive).

The wifi is free and speed moderate, but unnecessarily difficult to get in. The multiple required steps beyond most hotels (about 5 screens with confusing instructions on each) stumped two other two others in our group.

The rooms were clean, but we had to make due with two double beds that felt old. Not awful, but uncomfortable.

The hotel checks all the boxes of features that you want (pool, gym, even a locker room). It has a concierge that tries to be helpful, but in our experience didn't have influence with even the restaurants in the hotel let alone restaurants nearby for a last-minute reservation.

The hotel feels very large. It feels like a 3 star large corporate hotel. There is even one central station for seating at all of the three restaurants (choose your price point, if not your quality). Tacky?

We at at the Jackelope for b-fast & lunch. Only one of us liked the lunch entre they had chosen. B-fast was run-of-the-mill. Prices for all of that were average (~10-15 for a sandwich).

The Embers restaurant left us feeling ripped off and that was even before the 10pm call to our room from the waiter who said that our European counterparts added their tip wrong and asked if we would return downstairs to resolve it. (Um, can this wait until tomorrow?) At $30-$40 per entree, we expect good, if not excellent. To a person, the food was poor. The overcooked everything. The next day, resolving the bill took the work five of their staff. That is how little empowerment the staff is given to resolve issues.

If you must stay here, I don't see a reason to subject yourself to Embers. Be prepared for staff that clearly isn't doing this out of a love for the hospitality industry.

Room Tip: Ground floor on the grass is nice. All the rooms are going to look on a parking lot in one way or an...

Green Features: They have a 1/2 page on this that is hard to decipher. They look to be seeking a trademark for some term of theirs to describe green policies that they don't even articulate. You are left to assume they do the basic stuff most hotels do these days.

Thank you for providing feedback on your recent stay with us. The scenic drive from Tenaya Lodge to Yosemite Valley offers numerous photo opportunities along the way including Tunnel View where in one vista you can see all Yosemite’s icons: El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall and Half Dome. We apologize that you encountered challenges in making dinner reservations, and you’ve touched on something worth highlighting. Yosemite National Park is a four-season destination, but the highest levels of visitation occur during the summer months. This tends to affect wait times at all restaurants in the area. Yosemite in the fall or winter can offer a deeper level of engagement with its wonders; we highly recommended! We are also sorry that Embers in particular did not meet its usual high standard for you. We hope the issue you raised here concerning your dining bill was concluded with a satisfactory response; however, if you feel otherwise, please do call Yvonne Moreno at (559) 683-6555 so that we may set things right. Thanks again.

Wished we had booked longer at this hotel as well as planning for extra time in Yosemite National Park. We had a lovely room in the new annex and allowed us to walk into the main hotel past the swimming pool without going outside. Our room was spacious and provided all the facilities we needed. It had a very comfortable bed, excellent shower and bath tub. The annex also provided us with a Laundromat to do our ‘on the go’ laundry. It even had a machine converting dollars into quarters. It was our fault that we didn’t book a few extra nights. Next time we would definitely give this hotel and the Park at least three nights to enjoy both the facilities and the sights.
We visited in early/mid May and there was still a chill in the air, particularly in the evening but we enjoyed the open fire in the lounge and also cocktails before dinner. The Virgin Mary was something but the Bloody Mary had a stick of five vegetables adorning it! Dinner was excellent in the bar (as opposed to the a la carte restaurant).
We had an excellent morning in the Park as the Tenaya Lodge is only a few minutes from the Park’s south gate and got to see the Dogwood in full blossom, the Great Sequoia trees as well as Tunnel View, El Capitan and Bridalview Falls waterfall which was providing a spectacular mist over hundred metres from its base.
Both the hotel and the Park are highly recommended but give them more time than we did sadly. If only we'd booked 3 or 4 more nights!

Room Tip: Stay more than one night to enjoy all the facilities.

I would come back here with my teenage/adult kids but would go elsewhere as a couple. The Lodge was comfortable and in a good spot, just better suited to families. Loved waking to a white-out. We travelled in 2011.

Room Tip: Great family Lodge

We were planning a trip to Yosemite National Park and had been told by many friends that it was best to stay in the park to save time. As I read reviews from Trip Advisor I was very disenchanted. So many of the reviews stated that the accommodations in the park were dirty, worn and uncomfortable. My husband called Yosemite accommodations and they recommended the Tenaya Lodge near the south entrance when we were visiting Glacier Point and the Mariposa area. It is a big hotel and compares to most of the hotel chains today as it has big rooms and is clean and modern. There are three restaurants in the lobby, an indoor and outdoor pool and activities for families. The service was good and members of the staff at the desk and the restaurants were very friendly and helpful. Most of the restaurants serve the same meals but differ in ambiance. Embers is the more formal restaurant and Jackalope Grill is like a pub. In between is the Sierra Restaurant. Food is of average quality. There is also a deli and a store. A concierge is available to help with planning your vacation. The rooms are expensive. Supposedly we had a reduced fee ($300.) because we were there before rates went up in June. It was worth it to us to have peace of mind. I would not be able to sleep in some of those Yosemite cabins and hotels rated in Trip Advisor.

Green Features: I am very conscious about the environment and laud these hotels for promoting good ecological practices!

Thank you for posting this review; we very much appreciate your kind comments. Many guests find that our being located just outside Yosemite National Park is a welcome retreat from the crush of Yosemite’s crowds, especially during peak times. Sounds like you’re among them! Thanks again, and we look forward to seeing you another time.

From arrival to departure Tenaya Lodge and its staff were excellent, restaurants especially Breakfast were great value considering you are at Yosemite and somewhat of a captive audience- good pool, well serviced clean lodges with intermittent wifi if you are visiting Yosemite Tenaya Lodge is a safe bet
