“We loved it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

We really wanted to stay at the Ahwahnee, but they didn't have room for us. We ended up at the Tenaya lodge instead, and in the end we're so happy we did! The hotel is 5 minutes from the Yosemite park entrance, and after visiting the Ahwahnee and other places in the valley, we discovered we were much more comfortable staying outside the park than in the touristy valley. Our room was huge, and very clean. We loved the style of the lodge interior. The lobby was spectacular and welcoming. Service was quick, helpful and friendly. The Concierge was a BIG help, telling us to do the drive to Bodie ghost town through Tioga Pass right away because she thought Tioga might close the day after - which it did! But thanks to her, we made it to Bodie which was incredible! The Concierge also helped us plan our route to Death Valley. The gift shop and the cafe were perfect. The food in the restaurants was somewhat average, but service and atmosphere was wonderful. Only one complaint: We hated the view from our room. The view was basically concrete, some sort of noisy air condition thing and a parking lot. But then again, we could've just complained about it while we were there and they would've probably helped us out. But shy Scandinavians don't want to make a fuss! All in all a great stay at a very authentic and warm lodge. We would definitely come back for Yosemite and the Tenaya Lodge.

Stayed here for 2 nights in December with snow both nights. Much better access than getting stuck in the valley. Lodge is charming (of course not as charming as The Ahwahnee) and staff were customer friendly. Families seemed to be having a great time, ice skating, hiking in the snow. We took a morning to hike/snowshoe to the waterfalls --- lovely winter paradise.

Hot tub was welcome after the hike!

Advice to housekeeping --- not a good practice leaving food and waste on balconies --- very messy entrance to cabins.

Room Tip: Cabins with king bed and fireplace can be noisy if neighbors stomp around.

We stayed 2 nights whilst travelling from San francisco to Las vegas , the hotel location is brilliant and we were well looked after by the staff in the hotel and both restaurants. There is lots to do even in winter and its a stone throw to Yosemite entrance. Dont be put off by the reviews its great

The hotel looks nice, location was perfect(a good starting point for trips to yosemite, by car), the food and the service was great. Cozy campfire out on the patio in the evening. Will certainly return one day.

Traveling as a couple from North Carolina we wanted to see Yosemite during the winter time. We opted to stay December 30th and 31st in order to enjoy new years together in the hotel. My biggest issue was that we were treated as numbers from the moment we checked it. While the gentlemen who helped us from our car was extremely helpful, everyone inside the hotel was borderline awful. The first day we had no hot water at all, and when we went to eat dinner I received such a smart response regarding wait time from the hostess we almost didnt eat there. The second day we still had no hot water and the hotel sent forth a repair man in just over an hour. He was great and pleasant to talk to but unfortunately the problem was not fixed. We decided to go for a swim but the pool and hot tub were swamped with kids so that didnt work out. In the end we checked out on the 1st to which I told the lady at the front desk that there is not, nor had there been any hot water in the room for two days. Her reply was "I'm sorry, hope you enjoyed your stay" Seriously? I will never be staying here again for such a price.

We stayed at The Cottages at Tenaya Lodge. They are on the same property but a short walk from the main lodge. We enjoyed being a little further away from the hustle and bustle but you have to walk outside to get to the lodge, restaurants, swimming pool and spa keep in mind.

The room was nice with a fireplace, microwave, coffee and tea and a small fridge. The housekeeping did a great job everyday and a paper was delivered to our door.

*TIP: Bring a humidifier. They don't provide them and of course heat's on all the time and that just dries everything out especially your sinus' when you're asleep.

RESTAURANTS/FOOD: There's several restaurants at Tenaya Lodge but it's a bit of an illusion as it all comes from the same kitchen (except for the pizza parlor) and the menus are quite similar. It's a 30-50 minute wait to get a seat at dinner and they don't take reservations except for Embers, which is the most expensive of the eateries (the only one we didn't dine at). Overall the food was good and the staff is friendly but the service is slow by good dining standards which made for a bad dinning experience twice. We got 2 breakfasts with our 4 night stay - and the buffet is really good but for $16.95 it's smart to bring some of your own food if you don't want to eat heavy every morning and spend that much money for a bowl of cereal and some coffee.

*TIP: You can pick up some basic groceries at the Wawona General Store a few miles up the road if you forget to bring them. The don't have a lot but more then what Tenaya has at the "Parkside Deli".

The Sleigh Ride is fun. A real sleigh with 3 big Belgium horses pulling complete with bells. The operators served hot apple cider and toasted marsh mellows around a small camp fire at the ranch house before they turn around and bring you back. If you're lucky you can sit up with the driver and chat with him.

Tenaya also has a small skating rink that looked fun but we didn't have time for.

BADGER PASS SKI RESORT: Badger Pass is within Yosemite National Park and you must have snow chains/cables to enter durning snow season. There's a good chance you use the chains unless you have you have 4 wheel or all-wheel drive but you still need to have them to get into the park.

*TIP: Arrive early. If you're there by 8am you'll be happy! The first day we arrived at 9:30 and spent about 1 1/2 getting our lift tickets and rentals and they were out of a lot of sizes already. A real drag.
**You can also rent your ski gear from a local shop at home - which is what we'll do next time. Then you can arrive anytime.

The resort is family friendly, very small and a great place for kids to learn to ski or snowboard. Our two girls were up on the beginner lift by the end of their 1st day and we plan on coming back next year.

Room Tip: We enjoyed staying at The Cottages but if you come durning the winter keep in mind you have to walk...

We have driven by Tenaya several times leaving Yosemite from the South gate, so we were pretty excited to stay here during the Holiday week. Check-in was great, but it seemed to go downhill from there.
Rooms were average for a 3 star resort, including what looked like my old college mini-fridge under the bathroom counter. We made quick use of the resort's true gems, sledding and ice skating. We had a blast! Rent your sled or skates = guarateed fun! Or better yet, bring your own! Either way is great family fun, just steps away from your room.
Unfortunately, those were the highlights of staying at Tenaya. The food at the 3 restaurants merged into 1 was mediocre at best. Even our Austrailian friends thought the food was lacking in all three rooms.
And then there is room service... I have 2 beautiful daughters under 7 years old. And some meals are better served in our room because of their lack of ability to plant the backside into a seat. By the second day, I had had enough of hearing that the minimum time for room service delivery was 1+ hours, so I had a chat with the service manager. Needless to say, my order of kids pancakes was expedited nice and fast. This is a fail in my book, but because it was Dec. 28, they get some leeway.
The big problem is that there really isn't any other food near this lodge, so you end up being stuck with bad food service. Hope they get better in the future.

Thank you for your comments. Our apologies for the extended room service times during your stay over the holidays. We are delighted that you found the winter resort amenities at Tenaya Lodge to your satisfaction, however, and hopefully we have a chance to prove ourselves to you and your family again for a future Yosemite visit.
