“See the area from a different angle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2012

I enjoyed a cruise on the little Madaket. The friendly captain was very informative on the area. Although the scenery wasn't spectacular, I enjoyed seeing the harbor with its fishing boats and businesses and learning about the town.

“Get on this Boat!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

We took the sunset cocktail cruise last evening and had a wonderful time. The Madaket is a beautiful old boat, an obvious labor of love. Her captain, Cody, is passionate about the nautical history of the area, and the boats that made Eureka famous as a fishing town. Cruising the harbor, we saw lots of seals and pelicans, as well as kayakers and rowing teams at practice. Up and down the harbor we went, viewing the docks and the lumbermills as well as wildlife and homes along the water. The attentive barperson brought us drinks, and there were blankets on the chairs outside to cut the wind. It was chilly, plan on layering up if you go on this late-afternoon ride. Which you absolutely should.

“Great time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

What a great experience! The captain/tour guide was energetic & knowledgeable of the area's history. This was my kids' first time on a boat & they loved it! The captain even let them pose by the wheel for pictures.

“Enjoyable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012

Really enjoyed this boat rip round the bay. Captain Steve was unfailingly cheerful and got the level of information just right for visitors with no knowledge of the history of the area. Saw ospreys, blue heron, lots of seals and various other wildlife.

“A pleasant 75 minutes n Humboldt Bay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2012 via mobile

We took a cruise in the Madaket this afternoon, and had a lovely time. The boat was built in 1910 to operate as a ferry around the Humboldt Bay. It runs beautifully ... Surprisingly quiet for such an ancient boat. The tour guide had a very informative spiel, and made the history of the harbor come alive. For such a sleepy area, a lot has happened in the past 150 years, and the Madaket cruise helps set it all in context. I'd call a ride on the Madaket a necessary component of any effort to get to know the area better. the narrated cruise takes 75 minutes. There are two cruises on SUNDAY THROUGH Tuesday, three cruises Wednesday through Saturday. Check the website for special cruises (occasional happy hour cruise in the evening, brunch cruise on Sunday).

Purchasing tickets is easy - call the phone number on the website and leave a message with the date and time of your desired curise, the number of passengers, and a call-back number. They will call you back before the cruise to confirm your reservation. You can pay at the dock. The boat holds up to about 20 people comfortably.

Cruise service is excellent. There's beverage service on board. Be prepared for it to be cold. Dress in layers. The crew makes warm blankets available to those who desire them ... And most people do. I'm writing this review on July 29. I wore three layers, and at least 6 of the 16 people in board for our cruise took (and used!) the furnished blanket.

There's a considerable amount of rusting infrastructure about - it's a working harbor. But there's also a spectacular display of avian wildlife. Herons, pelicans, osprey, cormorants in abundance. Don't miss this trip when youre in Eureka or Arcata.
