“A little bit of a drive - but well worth it.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2010

This may be lengthy, but I will try to cover everything...
My family and I just returned to the Midwest from our week vacation to San Deigo - I travelled with my spouse, stepson (age 10) and son (4 1/2 months).
The Welks was recommended through a friend and we liked the idea of staying in a condo - the separate bedroom and kitchen were musts.

1. The Welks San Deigo is part of Welks Resorts - this is a time share property... HOWEVER, except for the short pitch (<2 minutes) when we checked in and a 30sec talk when I called the front desk with a question(they wanted to be sure I knew about the time share option), we were NEVER pressured to sit through a time share talk during our 8d stay.
2. Check-in was at 4p but we went straight to the resort upon landing 10ish. We were allowed to pre-check-in (paperwork done; no room keys; given keys to access the pool and resort amenities) which allowed me to pick which condo I wanted (it was not what they had assigned us) and to avoid the long check-in lines after 4p.
3. The initial person I booked through (directly thru the resort) suggested we stay on the Greens which could allow us to walk directly out our back patio onto the Golf Greens. I asked to stay in the newest (Mountain Villa) section because of its king size pillow top beds and newer condos. Be careful to note that many units throughout the entire complex are built into hillsides so a 1st floor unit may have you going down stairs to enter, but you walk out to flat ground, while the 2nd floor enters at street level, but has a balcony out back....etc. We stayed on the 3rd floor of unit 39 which gave us views down one of the Fairways and to the back of that area's pool. Our view was incredible, but the people on the two floors below us probably only saw a drainage area or the rocks surrounding the pool. Building 38 was next to us and was away from the pool. The 2 other buildings in our section overlooked the parking lot and across to the pool.
4. There were 5 different pools to choose from - the primary pool, with it's fast waterslide and playground was VERY crowded. Our area had a smaller waterslide and kids water play area (very nice). The other pools were more relaxed.
5. As a resort, there were multiple activities to do throughout the day - either free or for a nominal fee - golf lessons, pillow making, pool side movies, sundae making, casino night - to name a few. Each area also had a clubhouse with games (board games, electronic games, air hockey, ping pong, etc depending on which area you were in) - you could even rent fishing poles, videos and/or video gaming systems.
6. Our condo was very nice. Make sure to request a washer/dryer unit if you have kids! We had a king size bed in the master with a jacuzzi tub. Living room had a pull out queen size sleeper for our older son. We did move things around a little, but we were able to fit the pack-in-play next to the sofa - NOTE - the Resort does NOT have cribs/p-i-ps - you either need to bring one or rent one. The shower had dual shower heads and a rainfall overhead unit. There was plenty of places to store clothes but I would have liked more shelves instead of hanging areas.
7. The onsite Pizza Hut was reasonable and fast. The main restaurant was fine too - we only did carry out from there.
8. The Resort is in Escondido so you do need a car. We went into SD Proper at least 4x and it really only took about 30-40min each way. Legoland was 20-25min (off the interstate). Del Mar was about 30min.
9. The Resort does have an 18hold standard course and a different Par 3 course - we didn't play, but my husband said the course looked well kept. The golf clubs for rent were apparently marginal quality but not badly priced.

We were very pleased with the resort and its amenities and would recommend it anyone.

We stayed here during February and were very happy with our room. We did an exchange with our time share. We shared with another couple, so some of the time we slept on the sofa bed in the living room (absolutely horrible!) but there is a way to make it better, take the mattress and move it to the floor, then you don't get springs jabbing into you. This only matters if you are staying with others. If you have the whole place, it's a huge beautiful bedroom with a big soaker jet tub in it, separate to the bathroom. Nice big kitchen with everything you would need all new and clean. You do have to walk a bit to go to the store onsite or pool even, but it's really nice.

First, I would like to say that I read all the reviews good and bad and was alittle concerned. The place was so easy to get to from the San Diego airport. the place was very nice and grounds were clean. We got there alittle early and our room wasn't ready but decided to go to Walmart which was only a few minutes away and do some food shopping. By the time we got back our room was ready. The people at the desk were very nice and so was the woman who asks if you would like to take the tour. We declined and she didn't push us at all. We had the smaller one bedroom at the Pebble Beach area. It was fine for the 4 of us. We hade 2 pools with a hugh waterslide which the kids (and us) really enjoyed. We did have to call housekeeping to clean the room after 4 days but there was no problem and the room was cleaned when we got back. If you need any additional towels or toilettres all we did was call and within the hour we had what we needed. Also, we were told that Von's was a great place to shop for food and they were right. We actually preferred that one rather than Walmart and was closer also. We also barbecued a few times they have them next to each unit so it was very convenient. Also, the laundermat was right by the pool so the days we stayed by the pool was the days we did laundry. The market place is alittle pricey so I recommend you try to get everything at Von's. The weather is chilly in the AM but gets very hot around 11:00am till 6:00pm and then back to being chilly. Perfect weather. Hope this review helped.

Lovely resort with perfect weather. Condos are slightly outdated but huge! When you check-in just say NO when they ask you if you would like a tour then you won't have any problem with anyone trying to sell you a timeshare...it's that simple! We decided to stay there because we wanted to travel to San Diego, L.A., La Jolla, etc. It was the perfect location. And being from the East coast we were amazed that we never needed air conditioning! The units have high ceilings with ceiling fans and it cools down at night.

Had an absolute blast with my fiancee at the welk resort!! We own 3 timeshares and just added a week in the new mountian villas and couldnt be happier. The grounds are well kept and our villa was big and beautiful! Great weather and an all around great experience. I would highly recommend the place!

This was our second stay at the Welk Resort, a timeshare trade through RCI.

Pros:
--Modern, spacious rooms.
--Beautiful mountainous surroundings
--Two golf courses on the premises (a 9-hole and an "executive"--short--18-hole)
--Free wireless internet

Cons:
--Distance from the city of San Diego (45 minutes)
--Staff can get flustered

Other things to consider:
--Mix of older (75+) and younger ( under 10) crowd. Few teenagers with their parents.
--Nice pool, but not much going on at the resort
--If Debbie Reynolds and Juliet Prowse are your idea of great entertainment, this place is for you.

We stayed at the resort for 2 nights with our 14-year old and 8-year old grandkids. As others have experienced, we had many problems while there beginning with rude concierge personnel, TV issues (cable down and remote control with no battery), jacuzzi jets that didn't work for several hours, miscommunication about how to get more pool towels, room keys that continued to fail, scheduled activities that ended before printed time, a sofa bed that needed to be replaced years ago, and unprofessional help at the Front Desk from a young manager who really didn't seem to care. In spite of all these inconveniences and rude reception, we enjoyed our stay. Our 8-year old thoroughly enjoyed the pools with slides and the craft activities, and the game rooms have enough amenities to keep teenagers happy. We found the restaurant food acceptable and not overpriced, although if I were to go again, I'd definitely bring more food to cook ourselves. Since we were only there 2 nights, we didn't want to drive somewhere else for groceries or restaurants. It would be nice to have a poolside place to eat at more than one pool. It would be helpful if they would limit the number of day guests on the weekend as the pools do get very busy. But the biggest complaint we have is the lack of professional behavior of several of the front desk and concierge staff as well as a complete lack of communication between departments (front desk to maintenance, front desk to housekeeping).
