“A one and a two....a great getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2014

We stayed for two weeks in two different units at the Welk Resort in January, 2014. We are Marriott owners and had never stayed at a Welk Resort. We were pleasantly surprised by the resort, the units and the offerings they have. In both units we stayed in, the views from our patio/balcony were very nice. We were in the Volare building and our view included a lawn area, the catch and release fishing lake, the golf course, the mountain area with its rocky outcrops and lots of palm trees.

The first week we were in a downstairs unit. We always prefer the highest units but they could not provide us one for the first week. We had children upstairs happily running around in the unit fortunately only for the weekend. That’s why we request top floors in the first place.

We then changed to an upper floor, making our 2nd week annoyance free. The upper unit had cathedral ceilings and seemed much more spacious and light-filled. The view was better too. We also liked that both bathrooms had double sinks and were completely private baths with no doors entering into the living area.

In the Welk Resort, there are 5 living and recreation areas: Boulder Springs, Broadway, Melody Hill, Harmony Hill, and Mountain Villas. Each of these has its own recreation center and pool with lots of activities going on around the resort throughout the day. All resort guests have access to all these areas and activities. Many of the resort activities are free to participants. Some reviewers complain about activities costing extra but guests can’t really expect Welk Resort to foot the cost of all materials included in the activities such as the food items, craft making supplies etc. If the resort were only offering one activity a day, it would probably cover that cost but with 10-15 activities going on all day, those material costs would soon add up and have to be passed on to timeshare owners in their maintenance fees. A nominal fee for participation is reasonable.

It's a secluded resort with the nearest grocery store about 5 miles away. However, there is a small market onsite for immediate needs. In the true Lawrence Welk tradition of entertainment, the resort also has an active live theatre onsite featuring top Broadway-style shows. Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” was playing during our stay. A weekly farmers market offers crafts, fresh foods, dinner options etc. There is also an event center for large gatherings. The resort grounds are well kept with lots of greenery and a golf course. The hills surrounding the resort are full of rocks and boulders (much like Joshua Tree National Park) and are ruggedly beautiful. It is right off of Highway 15 whose buzz you can definitely hear especially at bedtime when all else is quiet. No problem for most. But, if you are a light sleeper and focus on noise, then you may want to bring earplugs. As light sleepers, we always pack earplugs just in case. The good news is that freeway access to all attractions is close by.

We have read the reviews critical about cleanliness etc. We found the units generally clean with only the usual wear and tear. They were quite large and completely adequate for our needs. These are upscale timeshare units. We did not expect them to be luxury hotel accommodations. Perhaps a complete “Spring cleaning” of the units on a more stepped up schedule would satisfy some other critics. But, honestly, you really have to be picky to expect perfection. The nearby Ducane BBQ’s work great, cranking quickly up to 600+ degrees, far superior to the usual timeshare outdoor cooking equipment.

The resort is within 30 minutes of beaches, mountains, wineries, 2 California Missions, a safari park, Lego land, casinos, and San Diego etc. For example, we drove to Palomar Mountain to see the observatory, visited the 2 California Missions (San Luis Rey Mission and Pala Mission) and drove over to the coast (Oceanside, Carlsbad etc). We are hikers. So, with all the mountains around we were disappointed not to be able to go hiking right out from the resort. Welk Resort could perhaps extend its very short nature walk with a switch-backing trail up to the top of its easement hill behind the Administrative Office building. However, within about 10 minutes of the resort on Cougar Pass Road, we hiked the 5 mile Englemann Loop of the Daley Ranch. There are other trails that extend another 10-12 miles. There are other hikes within 20+ minutes of the resort.

We wanted a quiet getaway so going there off season was great. On the weekends there are lots of families with children increasing the hustle and bustle. The Melody Hill Recreation Center is for those over 18 and includes a “serenity” pool and fitness center for “adults only”. However, during the week, Welk Resort is a quiet off season getaway and very peaceful.

In brief, we had a good time at Welk Resort in Escondido. We found the staff to be professional, friendly and helpful (“Joshlyn” comes quickly to mind). As one would expect, there are sales staff who sign you up for timeshare presentations with $100 Welk vouchers while giving you your parking pass. A day or two later, we returned the vouchers to the concierge and cancelled our timeshare tour. They only called us back once with a bit more enticement which we again declined. The sales staff was simply and politely doing its job and was not pushy or intrusive as some other reviewers allege. And the 4PM Check-in and 10AM Check-out is pretty much standard, as regular timeshare guests realize.

In its continuing maintenance and development planning, the Welk Resort(s) would do well to include a much larger full service fitness center with a major up-grade to the weight lifting and cardio equipment. The present situation is inadequate. Contemporary seniors and younger generations are active and health conscious and expect far more up-to-date fitness facilities.

We would definitely recommend the place for families with children (as they have lots of pools and activities). We would also recommend it for retirees during off season, family reunions etc.

Room Tip: The Volare building had faced away from Highway 15 and had good views.

We stayed here the week of New Years with a time share trade. The grounds are gorgeous and the view from our balcony was incredible. I will start off by saying that we may have a bit of a unique filter as the resort we own in , Royal Haciendas in Riviera Maya, Mexico is exceptional in terms of service and amenities and this place doesn't come close.
We thought it was a bit tacky that they make you speak to a timeshare salesperson in order to get your parking pass. We told him we weren't interested but he kept at it, even trying to convince us to use their babysitting service. Really? Have a stranger care for our 3-month old (and 4 year old) all so we can go listen to a timeshare pitch? If only they put as much effort into the guest experience as they do into selling units.
We didn't arrive until 5:30 pm but we waited in a long line to check in. We were sent to our room but when we got there, the housekeeper had just started cleaning it. We called and complained and were just forwarded around until the "head of housekeeping" told us we could have a late checkout. Then on checkout day yet another unhelpful front desk clerk challenged our late check out which angered us. The whole thing just seems to be very disorganized.
Our 2-bedroom unit was large and well appointed but not very clean.
We found crumbs all over the kitchen windowsill.
There are lots of great activities here but absolutely everything costs extra. You constantly feel you are being nickel and dimed. They are a family resort but they don't even have cribs or pack n plays. You have to pay a service to rent one! We are used to these types of resorts having everything included.
The engagement of the staff is mixed. We arrived to an activity for my 4-year old 3 minutes late and were rudely told she couldn't participate. Luckily another employee overheard and offered to give her an individual lesson.
The pools and grounds are lovely and we took advantage of many of the activities (at a cost): fishing, s'mores, candy sushi making, play doh etc.
There is a fun farmers market one night each week. There is a convenience store on-sight with a very poor and incredibly expensive selection. There is also a Pizza Hut and sit-down restaurant. We ate at the restaurant and enjoyed it but wished there were more dining options as the resort as it is truly in the middle if nowhere.

I admit that I did not expect a luxurious condo at a Lawrence Welk property, but I was very pleasantly surprised when my husband and I checked in to our newly renovated 1-bedroom condo at the Welk Resort - Villas on the Green. We had a lovely condo with comfortable sofa and chair in the living area and very comfortable king-sized bed with plenty of clothing storage room in the bedroom. Our condo overlooked the golf course, which gave us a lovely view from our ground-level patio. The patio was quite small, so if you have a chance to rent a 2-bedroom unit, you will be rewarded with a much larger patio. Grounds were well-kept and pool looked like fun, but it was a little too chilly to take a dip. The Monday evening farmer's market on the property is small but represented by a good range of sellers. We purchased a rotisserie chicken, which was yummy, and some local veggies and fruits and were very pleased with the quality. This is a great location to visit the Temecula Wineries and to visit the beaches from Carlsbad down to LaJolla. Good beer at Karl Strauss beer cafes along with innovative menu choices. Our favorite wineries were Wien and Miramonte.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a refurbished room with a view of the golf course. Rent a 2-br unit it possible...

I stayed at a 2 bedroom suite in the Dixie building I was with my girlfriend and cousin.
Nice views from seemingly every building and unit in those buildings.
Very friendly staff - we asked a lot of questions almost every night and always got a courteous response.
The Rec Center near our building (Harmony Hill) was being renovated and we're on a serious shuffleboard kick. No shuffleboard gear as per the renovations, but because the shuffleboard itself was outside of the sealed off area. The front staff went out of there way to get the gear so we could rock some of this ridiculous game while we were staying.
We stayed for a week and every day we woke up impressed with how great of a resort this was. Recommend it to anyone.
Only downside is that it's not within walking distance of any stores - they have a (overpriced) convenience store on site with everything you could need but $2.50 for stale Starbucks is a little cruel c'mon.
Nice beds, very clean room, and great recreation facilities - Foosball, table tennis, air hockey are all free. Great stuff Welk Resort.
(I gave location a 3 only because it's pretty far from any shopping... but it's a resort so aren't you supposed to want to be away from everything.)

Room Tip: Recommend a 2nd or 3rd floor room for better view. (Though the resort is designed in such a way that...

Was delighted to find time share so close to San Diego [38 miles south ] and the Temecula wine country [15 miles north]. Checked reviews and it sounded favorable. When I arrived I was told that the unit assigned [Gypsy 238] was one of those renovated. However when I got there with my guest I was very disappointed in the condition. As you can see from the attached pictures not only was the furniture in poor condition, the unit was dirty and there were immediate serious maintainence issues. The kitchen sink would not drain because the garbage disposal was clogged. The tub in the master suite would not drain and I had to take a shower standing in four inches of water. It turned out that when it was fixed it had been totally clogged with hair! [disgusting]. Clearly neither of these drains had been attended to by cleaning team when the last renter's left or both of these issues would have been caught. The rugs in the living room and master bedroom were so filthy I would not walk around barefoot. They were to be cleaned during the day [on Tuesday] while we were out. However the service man showed up at 7:30PM on Tuesday to shampoo the rugs! Didn't happen that night or ever during or stay. The plantation blinds in the living room need to be adjusted as one set would not even stay in place shut [had to force them in place to stay], the couch is in need of replacement as is the damaged ottoman. Mattress of poor quality. Very sad condition. On the flip side the resort has nice amenities and the location is a good location for touring southern CA. Had little interaction with staff and what I did was ineffective. Went to spa and could not even get in. No sign indicating hours only telling me to sit outside and someone would come - but lights were out. It did not seem very professional. Looked like someone only came if there was an appointment. Very confusing.

Room Tip: If you have a handicapped person in your party ask for an end unit so you can use handicap parking a...

Rooms with mountain view are higher quality. Others are very nice. I would recommend second or third floor. Great place for children, lots of activities. The restaurant was excellent. I give this entire resort a very high rating.

We had mediocre expectations, but were very pleasantly surprised. Upgraded condos, swimming & activities for kids, a theater, a restaurant, golf, gift stores & all on the premises. Close to a freeway (but not too close)-San Diego, Coronado Island, Torrey Pines, Temecula, Safari Wild Animal Park (among other destinations are close and an easy trip on the freeway. Definitely planning to come here again.
