“Home away from home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2012 via mobile

The Welk Resort is our home away from home when we visit our family in the San Diego area. Our grandkids get to come over to our place and they have a ball. A great family resort!

We stayed at the resort for a week. It was great. The resort is beautiful. It is however very large so walking everywhere is not an option. There is a shuttle that takes you to the different areas of the resort but it is doesn't run very often. There are 2 great pools that have children's areas and water slides. We went to the Tuesday night festival in the evening which had dinner and a band and smores...it was great. All in all we had a wonderful time!

Room Tip: Make sure you choose somewhere near a pool if you have a family.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom, 2 bath unit on Melody Hill. The kitchen and bath had been updated the the livingroom and bedroom still had the old wallpaper which made the whole unit seem dated. These units are very comfortable and I love the fact each bedroom has a full bathroom. The living room is large, has a flat screen tv, cd player, pull out queen bed and two large chairs plus patio with table and chairs. The dining area has a large table with 4 chairs. The kitchen has an eating area with 2 chairs, full size refer with ice maker, full electric range and oven, microwave, coffee maker, blender and plenty of cooking pans. If you need anything, just call and they will get it for you. There are BBQ's and tables close by.
Our grandchildren ages 7 to 10 enjoyed the rec centers. They played pool, ping pong, made craft projects, and of course loved the water slides.
San Diego is about 30 miles. Use the HOV lane for a very easy drive. The ocean is about 30 minutes away. Oceanside pier is a great place to spend some time. We also so like Carlsblad outlets and Cardiff by the sea, the Beach House is a restaurant right on the beach. Wine tasting, casinos, anitque shops and old town Temecula is fun. Of course there are lots of golf courses.

Room Tip: Mountain Villas are newer and nicer, but the cell reception here is not so good and you would have t...

They are a little out of the way which is nice because there isn't a lot of traffic, but at the same time it is a longer drive to get into San Diego to sight see, etc. They have 5 pools and each have a hot tub which make it so they usually aren't super crowded. They have remodeled recently, not the best job ever, but they are pretty nice. Overall it was a fun place to stay with two small golf courses on the property.

We had family coming to town for a graduation and didn't want to attempt to cram people in our house. We used our RCI trading abilities, and combined with our Welk Week that we own, we ended up with 4 rooms at Villas on the Green. Two of the rooms were the smaller side of the 2-bedroom lock-off, and the other 2 were part of a whole 2-bedroom unit.

The Villas on the Green are not as nice as the ones on Broadway/Melody Hill (their original buildings), but they were great for housing our family in a comfortable and close location. I will say after staying at several location via RCI and II you start to get sorta picky. I did feel the smaller unit (plain 1 bdrm?) as opposed to the larger (1 bdrm deluxe?) was quite small. Oh and we also ended up in a handicapped unit so things were a bit awkward (e.g. everything was a waist/knee level -- microwave, closet, etc.). This is the second time I've ended up in a handicapped room here, not sure if they are always super packed or just have a large number of handicapped rooms. But overall the room was just fine and it was clean. We did have a nice view of the golf course.

We did the timeshare talk and got tickets to see a Beatles tribute band -- Britain's Finest. It was a great show!

As i'm sure everyone knows, this place isn't actually in San Diego, but the drive to get there is ~35 min so it's not a bad trip. You can also scoot over to Oceanside, Carlsbad on the coast, and if you go the other direction, you can go wine tasting in Temecula.

One thing i'd like to do next time we're at the Welk is take advantage of all the beer around the area. There are tons of small breweries in Escondido, Vista, etc. and I want to go do tastings.

Room Tip: Mountain Villas = Nicest, but some of the rooms are on the smaller side Villas on the Green = on th...

We stayed here to get away from the city, and our experience was not pleasureable. First, we played golf and it was not a championship course though it was advertised as such in the brochures and online when we were invited to the intro mtg for potl timeshare holders. On a couple of par 3's you could literally throw your ball from the T box the green (less than 60 yds) and on a couple of par 4's it was only iron play as you could drive the green off the tee box. I only hit a 250yd ball on avg so it is not a championship golfcourse (par 60).
The room- We got a 1 bdrm 'suite', and in the room the drawers wouldn't open and the range was limited to 1/2 out as the door had to be closed. There was a 19" color tv in the room. In the living room area there was no view...on the sofa you faced the dining room wall, and had to look 45deg to the left to see your tv that was placed on the fridge in the kitchen. A little on the shabby side, don't you think for the bargain $120/nt for timeshare holders for 1bdr suties? I complained to the front desk who said that they'd call back w/ another room and never did after 2 hrs (approaching 930p) I called back and they said that the last girl left and didn't leave word and that they couldn't change rooms at this point but quickly said that we could discuss it w/ Welk Resorts mgmnt during the week. So I did..got hold of a voice mail and lft a msg...no reply w/i 3 days...left another one...no reply after 3days...and then yea I got a call from the Lawrence Welk Resort! Would you believe it was a marketing person who was asking if I wanted to upgrade my timeshare package? Anyway, I 'vented' a little and she would have someone call me back. And they didn't. Anyway the drama has gone on for over a year. Guess if I'm sold on the Timeshare idea? With Travelzoo and 50% off packages....don't think so.
By the way though, beautiful grounds, and the rooms that they show you to buy the tmeshares are quite nice...you'd think you're actually buying a piece of what you're seeing! I think that the timeshare concept wil lose ground and become a thing of the past. In all fairness, it's a safe atmosphere for those w/ families, and nice pace for seniors...I'll give 'em that for trying. For timeshare packages though...save your money.

Room Tip: Don't play golf here if you're a below 100 golfer. There's Pala Mesa 10mins away and Tem...

Thank you for taking your time to post a review. We sincerely apologize for your inconveniences. Regarding golf, we have two golf courses. One is an 18 Hole Executive, which is a collection of Par 4 and Par 3 holes, and the other is a 18 Hole Par Three. We are extremely disappointed for the unacceptable inactions to remedy your displeasure and have discussed with our Guest Services Team.

My 84 year old mother, my 18 year old daughter, 2 year old daughter and I stayed from May 20-25 at the Welk Resorts San Diego. This place has something for everyone--theatre, multiple pools and recreation centers, some with water slides, wading pools, video games, fire pits, etc. There is a golf course, restaurant, store, fishing--all in one place if you want to stay. It has a full kitchen, so you can eat for much less. 3 TV's in our room. Nice patio or balcony with each room. Staff is friendly and helpful; concierge provides discount tickets to most area attractions. It is also centrally located between Los Angeles and San Diego, so you can reach all the areas attractions. It is closer to San Diego, however, than LA. 30 minutes to the San Diego Zoo, less to the Wild Animal Park. 20 minutes to a nice beach. Nestled in the foothills, so the heat is less here. Very beautiful location--lots of wildlife.

Room Tip: I don't think the place has a bad room. They do have lock-off units so two families can travel...
