“Visiting since 1979...seriously!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2011

We just spent a long weekend in our favorite city in California. As usual we stayed at this motel and as usual our stay was wonderful! Mind you, this is NOT The Ritz Carlton, it is a motel. The rooms are clean, the staff was kind and helpful, the views were breathtaking! You can sit and watch the most beautiful sunset you have ever seen, right from your balcony or your bed...for under $100.00!! In 1979, my family's first year visiting, room rates for 3 full size beds in 2 rooms plus kitchen amenities, were approximately $69.00 per night. This visit I barely paid more than that for the exact same amenities. This place also has barbecue grills and equipment so you don't have to eat out all the time.

We are a family of 4 and can't afford vacations in today's economy, The Moonlight Beach Motel helps you to relax without breaking the bank.

Room Tip: I recommend room 105 or 106 if you have children.

Kimme411, Thank you for your kind words ... Yes, 105 & 106 are great rooms for families that need the extra bed, and two rooms and still have access to the patio and garden area. It gives the kids access to a safe and fun area to play right out side the room. We will be adding Room 104 to that list of three beds in November because they have been so popular. The studio rooms 107 & 108 have some of the same features with two beds in a studio lay out. You have to be one of the longest guests we have heard from since the Motel was built in 1976 ! Hope to see you again soon ... cheers geo.

This place is terrific. It's about a one minute walk to the beach and very close to the main street in Encinitas where all the shops and restaurants are. The rooms are comfortable. Everything was clean and relatively new. For the price it is unbelievable! We had a room with two beds and a kitchenette for under a hundred bucks! If you are on an upper floor you will have an ocean view but we we very happy on the first floor with our surf boards. My 9' board fit in the room, no problem. The feeling of the place is calm and pleasant. The couple that run the place are so sweet and friendly and helpful. I have nothing but good things to say about the Moonlight Beach Motel. I will definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: In the rooms with only one bed, the bed is a double, not a queen or king. So if you are a couple who...

TraciBford, Thank You for your kind words. I'm glad the Moonlight Beach Motel was all you expected. Yes the rooms on the first floor are great for access to get in and out with your boards and get to the beach ASAP. All the rooms have their own charm in a certain way ... I would like to correct you on one note. I'm confused because all the beds in the motel are queens, but in some of the studio rooms the rooms are so open and big the bed may look like a double. Hope to see you again soon ! geo.

Walking distance to the beach...and what a perfect place to stay! Yes, it is a "motel"..but don't let that fool you. We stayed on the 2nd of 3 floors with a beautiful view of the ocean. Each room has it's own private balcony (patio on the 1st floor). The eminities exceeded our expectations. The bedroom is separated from the main living room...great if you are traveling with friends/family. Each room has a kitchenette...microwave, stove, oven, utensils, plates, pans to cook on , etc. The only thing it doesn't have is a coffee maker (we came prepared and brought or own coffee press) but the front desk does serve coffee and pastries of some sort every morning. There is also a pool and patio area including 3-4 BBQ's that are available during your stay! All in all, it over-delivered in every way. Definitley would recommend!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the 3rd floor if available. If not, 2nd floor still has great views.

Crazy4Pinot, Thank you for you kind words ... I was not the manager back in August but wile reading your review I was a bit confused. #1. We do have the patio area with three BBQ's, but we do not have a pool ... We do try and supply coffee machines upon request for guests, but we also have coffee and danish served daily in the office from 9:00am to 11:00am. For those that require a more speciality coffee experience, the "Lofty Bean Coffee Bar" is apx. a one min. walk from the motel. Hope to se you again soon ... geo.

I'd like to address some of the negative reviews on here...

My husband and I have been staying at MBM for 13 years. Here's the deal folks....this is not the Ritz Carlton. This is not even the Motel 6. If you don't have realistic expectations about the type of lodging this is then you will be disappointed. This is a quaint, albeit old, beach motel. The furnishings and appliances are old but clean and in good repair and everything works well including the free wi-fi which most hotels charge you for. The housekeeping staff is lovely, kind and efficient although they show up pretty late to clean the rooms so if you want to take an afternoon nap you may be interrupted. You may not get a complete set of dishes or silverware but that's part of the charm. Nope, there's no coffee maker, but there's a seriously amazing organic coffee bar 10 feet from your room that makes the most incredible salted caramel latte on earth. This is a very quaint mom and pop place, it's tidy and clean and you cannot beat the location or the price considering the location. Some rooms have ocean views, those ending in 5-8 have full to partial ocean views and 4-1 dont' have much view at all. Some rooms have separate bedrooms which can be great if you want to stay up while the other person wants to sleep. We love it, the proximity to the beach is awesome, about 2 blocks. The ability to walk downtown to great restaurants and little shops is a huge bonus. The rooms all have kitchenettes and it's even better since they opened a Whole Foods within a few blocks and you can walk to get your groceries. It's all great and the price is low considering what you get.

Now here's the prickly part.... Chen the manager runs a very tight ship, very, very tight. It's quiet and clean which is more than I can say for a LOT of beach motels. This is not Mission beach, if you want to party you are in the wrong place because she just wont tolerate it. You can't even smoke on the property or in the parking lot. And guess what? THAT IS WHY PEOPLE LOVE THIS PLACE. It's located in an upscale, family oriented neighborhood, this is not the place to drink beer on your balcony...unless you want Chen to come out in her bathrobe and tell you to go inside, and no that is not an exaggeration. The people who complained about her in these reviews, that complained that she didn't want them making noise after 9pm, the people who want to drink beer on their balcony or play loud music, guess what she doesn't want you there anyway and NEITHER DO WE! You're in the wrong place if that's what you're looking for.

Now, if you are looking for a very well run, quiet, clean, safe, respectable place that you can stay with your family without the worry of a bunch of drunk morons hanging off the balcony waking up your kids with their obnoxious behavior, or some creep blasting music next door so you can't sleep then this is the place because it just wont be tolerated. If you are looking for a beach motel that's a stones throw from one of the quietest, cleanest beaches in this area and at a great price, with a dignified atmosphere then this is the place for you. If you want to get wasted, smoke cigarettes, or make noise after 9pm, go back to Mission Beach. So there it is.

I would recommend this place to anyone, just know what you're looking for and have realistic expectations.

Yviebee, Thank You for your kind words ... I'm so glad you took the time to express your opinion on a negative review that you saw on this site ... Like your self I have been staying at the Moonlight Beach Motel since 1991 (20 years) before I woke up in a dream this October and now manage the motel with my wife Deborah. Like you said Chen ran a very tight ship and that is what the MBM is all about ! There are 24 rooms at the Moonlight Beach Motel, and they all face west overlooking the patio and garden area. We have families, couples, teaches, people working in the area and just generally GREAT guests ... We want everyone to have a fun and great time wile staying at the Moonlight Beach Motel, but it's important to know the Motel closes at 9:00 PM. We encourage the use of the patio garden area for all our guests, but you have to realize that with all rooms facing west towards the beach the sound of loud talking, partying and general noise can't be had in consideration of the other 23 rooms and other guests. They might be enjoying the tranquil sound of the crashing waves of the ocean from their patio, or sleeping with the windows open to enjoy the wonderful sea breezes. So with that said, please understand if this is not what you are looking for, please book another motel. We plan on running the same tight ship and continuing the reputation of what made The Moonlight Beach Motel what it is today. Hope to see you again soon ... geo.

This hotel is in a great spot. It's close to everything with a nice ocean view.
It certainly isn't a fancy hotel. But it is clean and you can hear the waves at night if you leave your balcony door open.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Moonlight Beach Hotel. There couldn't be a better location, we loved the microwave, fridge, stove, and generous bathroom size. Instant HOT water from both the kitchen and bathroom sinks, and the shower. My kids enjoyed all the cable TV channels, esp. Disney Channel!! Beautiful view from our first floor room of the beach and the ocean. Stunning colors at night. Truly, the best aspect of this property is its location ~ just a short, two-minute stroll to the beach.
Moonlight Beach is really a treasure ~ just the right size, just enough crashing surf to play in, perfectly packable sand for some amazing sand castles. Took a loooong stroll down the beach to Swami's, then Pipe's Beaches, and back to Moonlight. Nothing beats sitting on the sand and playing in the water. Love the southern California sun!

perfect location in front of the beach, the rooms are clean and with a full equipped kitchen.
medium economy prices.
A little breakfast it's included at the reception from 9 am.
the only bad things is that the asian women at the reception isn't polite and the internet connection doesn't work very well.

Moonlight Beach Motel, located two blocks from Moonlight Beach in scenic Encinitas, California, is one of the few true "beach motels" left in Southern California … Referred to as the "American Rivera”, Encinitas has the charm of the past but all the amenities today’s travelers are looking for. There are so many wonderful restaurants, Whole Foods Market and boutiques within walking distance of the motel that you may want to leave your car behind … Locals refer more family and friends to this motel than any other hotel or motel in Encinitas.
