We attended a graduation at UC Berkeley on Memorial Day weekend. As I expected big crowds everywhere, I looked early for a hotel. We where two adults and two "children", a teenage girl and an adult son. The Woodfuin suites in Emeriville was perfect. First the location, right off the highway, made it great for going anywhere we needed to. Driving time to UC Berkeley campus was 10-15 minutes.
Second, the staff was very friendly and welcoming.
Third the suite was perfect for our needs, we had two rooms, one with two queen beds and the sitting room with a pull out sofa.
The suite also had a huge bathroom and a small kitchen area with all the utensils. We only used the kitchen for snacks, but it was great to have the full size fridge and sink.
We also used the movie library once, where you can check out movies for a couple of days at no extra charge. We had breakfast at the hotel only once. The buffett was a little pricy, but very convenient and the food and service were great.
Forth the rate was very reasonable for San Francisco area hotels, at $160.
We highly recommend this hotel for anyone having to stay near Berkeley or Oakland. We will stay there again if we go back to the area.

  • Liked — Spacious accommodation and friendly staff
  • Disliked — The outdoor pool was not heated at the time, so was not available

If this was a review of the facilities only, I'd have rated it four to five stars. We paid $169 for a Saturday night stay. Our one-bedroom suite was wonderful - spacious, modern, clean, and well-maintained. We had a balcony facing the bay, the kitchen was stocked condo-style, there were two TV's, a DVD player, and a large, well-stocked bathroom with recessed lighting. The bed itself was a little hard and the linen quality was just okay. Parking was free, Amtrak is practically on-site, there are lots of restaurants and shopping within walking distance, and it's a quick trip across the Bay Bridge to S.F.

Unfortunately, I can't give it full marks due to a couple of factors:
1. The hotel's long-standing opposition to and noncompliance with the local "living wage ordinance." Apparently the dispute has been highly publicized locally and involves some shady political maneuvering by the hotel owner.
2. At about midnight, a full-on party cranked up in the suite next door. Lots of door slamming, woo-hooing, and general mayhem. I called the desk twice and the noise finally stopped around 2 a.m. At checkout, the front desk preemptively offered me a $40 reimbursement, which worked out to $20 for each hour of lost sleep. I was told that it had been a post-prom party, booked by parents to evade the hotel's over-18 policy (nice example to set for your kids, mom and dad). To be fair, I doubt parties are a problem on weeknights, but buyer beware on weekends.

In summary, if you're looking for a spacious, well-maintained suite at a decent price near San Francisco, you might consider this. If you're concerned about how they can offer those good rates (low worker wages) or if a good night's sleep is essential to you, you might want to look elsewhere.

  • Liked — Modern, clean, spacious suite.
  • Disliked — Noisy.

This was the first hotel on our cross country trip. We picked it because it was right across the Amtrak station where we would catch the train the next morning. We were traveling with our two young children.

I've read the reviews and was concerned but everything about the hotel and staff was great. The room was very nice and clean and overlooked the train yard. We were on the 7th floor.

It was very close to a Food Court and this was a Food Court! Many places the food court is an excuse to put in national fast food chains with small booths. This Food Court was tremendous in its diversity. Any kind of food style you could want you could find. And the food we ate was very good.

Next to the Food Court is a Border's and we got our magazines and books for our train ride.

We didn't notice the noise from the train and we overlooked the station and were neat the freeway overpass. The staff at the hotel was also very nice. I couldn't imagine what those other reviewers went through. Because our experience was completely different.

  • Liked — Spacious, quiet and across the train station.
  • Disliked — Nothing.

We booked this direct about 3 weeks before leaving for the USA, we gave our card details over the phone, was assured the booking was done and we would get an e-mail, i had to phone each day for 7 days before we left the UK to ask for e-mail confirmation, eventually after all this i called customer services head office and finally got confirmation and that they had charged me for the first night of 2 booked!

After reading mixed reviews we where a little concerned but when we got there we where happy with our large 2 bedroom suite although not cheap at $300 a night room only, the pool was lovely although noisy as its next to the road and road works with hammer drills spoiled relaxation!

The other point is that i would recommend you ask for a room at the road side as at the back the train line is very noisy, trains blast thier horns right through the night!

Restuarant is expensive, we ate at PJ Changs 1 night which was just 5 mins walk in the new shopping area, and the second night we ate at Circus, an English bar famous for its fish ans chips and real English Ale, its was good and reasonably priced.

We did enjoy the hotel even though it started out bad, the staff where nice and helpful, they let us keep the room till 1 pm as our flight was not until 7pm eve which was a nice touch,

I think some of the reviews are a bit unfair, i would stay again but i would ask for a room / suite at the front of the hotel.

With almost 5 months a year on the road, I think I can say that this is above average. My room (contracted by my company) was clean, well-appointed, and bright. Flat-screen TV and a DVD player. ( It did not, however, have wi-fi, which is minus) The front desk staff was not overly-welcoming, but seemed willing to assist me when I asked questions. The workout room is only average for this type hotel. Nice pool. I didn't eat at the restaurant, but the buffet for $12.00 is in line with others I've seen. (Plenty of other places to eat within a 10 min. walk in either direction from the front door; a nice area) There are shuttles available to take you to either local restaurants or to the closest BART station. Overall, I would not hesitate to stay here again.
