“Great stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013 via mobile

We really enjoyed this hotel! The suites come with everything that you need and if there is something that you are requesting calling the front desk is efficient & the request is fulfilled immediately! Jennifer at the front desk was super nice! Her customer service was spectacular & she even called up to the room to make sure that I was pleased with the room! Never experienced that! Anyway we will definitely stay here again!
Ohhhh and get a room on the bay side view! It is amazing!!!!

Years ago I stayed at this hotel when it was a Woodfin Suites. The name was unique as was the architecture of the building. It's a modern combination of the mid century modern look pioneered by Frank Lloyd Wright, but elevated and expanded into a rather grand but accessible clean design. The hotel is imposing as it's rather tall, promising great views of the San Francisco Bay. The exterior has a tan & earth tone color scheme accented by vertical spires and tall bright windows. Even the signage on this hotel, formerly the Woodfin and now the Hyatt House, offers dramatic lighting and essentially announces this is the place to be.

I spend so much time on the exterior of the place because this is a business/family style hotel, not a super 5-star luxury place. Yes they could have concierge service and Bentleys for rent, but they do not. What they do have is a place that advertises its cleanliness and comfort on the outside, and they match it expertly once you're within their walls.

The lobby of the hotel is very clean and decorated with tasteful works of art. All large-space carpets are dated from the moment they are installed, but the Hyatt House's carpet matches their marble flooring well, and doesn't draw the eye one way or the other.
The rooms are perfect efficiency apartments. I have always loved the French doors separating the living room from the bedroom area. The kitchen is perfectly appointed, with a full size fridge, dishwasher and a full stock of pots, pans, plates, silverware, etc. Even when I purchased a frozen dinner in the lobby store, I was able to plate it and eat like a grown up, rather than munching out of the box with too-tiny plastic ware. Thank You!

The living space was also set up well, and plenty spacious. The sleeper sofa, easy chair, desk and entertainment center all had just the right touches. The DVD player was especially nice with game/AUX inputs right at the front. More on the entertainment center later.

The bedroom was quite lovely. Although I had a view facing the train station and the hills (not the bay), it was still an inviting and comforting outlook. Some reports complain of the train noise, but it was minimal compared to other hotels that can be quite racket-filled. The large windows must be double-paned because I barely heard anything.

The bathroom is well-designed to afford the maximum space. It's one of the better layouts outside a full-luxury hotel. Full size tub, wall-length vanity, semi-private WC area - everything was in its proper place and felt natural.

The few quibbles I have are as follows:
Television: I don't think I've seen a bulbous 19 inch tube TV set since the Clinton administration. REALLY? I can't believe in the change of management that no one thought to get some wholesale flat screen TVs. They don't have to be huge, but really, the tubes are now quite out-dated and lend a cheesy element to what is really a refined hotel experience. Please bite the bullet and dump these things.

Toiletries: i always gripe about tiny soaps, although the Hyatt House's little soaps were in a unique shape and not the worst I've seen. A Shower Gel option should really be the norm, not the exception. You're an all-suites hotel catering to a business and higher-end family traveler. At least make the gel available upon request. There are other Hyatt properties with a spa-quality shower gel and lotion - this stuff should be all over every Hyatt affiliated property (it's really that good).

Lotion - for some reason this hotel gave me hundreds of shampoos and conditioners but I had to ask multiple times for lotion. The housekeeping staff were very polite but they seemed to be under gag order not to offer or discuss lotion under penalty of death. Maybe they just ran low that weekend. If lotion is in that short supply, there may be a larger issue at hand.

Breakfast Bar: Free Breakfast is an All American benefit that should be in the constitution. The Hyatt House offers a very thorough and tasty one. It's basic, but works just fine. Only weird thing, there was only Canadian bacon, not the American style strip bacon. Hm. Really? Does Canada win the bacon war? I think not. However the presentation of the breakfast bar is beautiful and the food is fine.

Beyond those minor things, let me close with a word on the staff.
Every single staff member I encountered was exceptional! They were all polite, all interested in the quality of my stay and all eager to 'plus' my experience with every point of contact. They offered directions, weather reports, recommendations on where to eat and shop, driving and walking times, and even reminded me about the closing of the kitchen in case I wanted a final snack for the evening.

These people are trained to provide an excellent customer experience and they get it right.
KUDOS!

If you're looking for a great place to stay, this is it.

Room Tip: ask for what you want.

Very nice staff, comfy bed, nice bathroom, lots of shopping and restaurants close by, good heating and cooling system. Now the bad, the room smelled like a very strong cologne, night stand lamp light bulb was out, carpets old and stained. Some rooms have old TV's. Will not stay here again.

Room Tip: Train station behind hotel, so if you may want to choose a room facing west

This was the perfect location to met our daughter who traveled by Amtrak. Five of us stayed in a 2 bed suite with a pull-out sofa in the living room area. The Emeryville Amtrak Station is right behind the hotel. There is a pedestrian walkway over the tracks, which is very convenient. We spent one day visiting Alcatraz and North Beach. The Bay Bridge is very close making the trip into the city an easy one.
One of the big draws to this hotel was free parking and breakfast for the five of us. That saved us a bundle. Hotels in the city typically charge $50 per night for parking. Breakfast for 5 is easily another $50.
On our first night there we walked across the street to Hot Italian, a pizza joint, and ordered two pizza's to go. They were very good. This is an upscale pizza place. We sat at the bar and had some beers while waiting. HIghly recommned this spot. Pizza's were thin crust, artsy fartsy, and about $13 each, with 8 slices per pizza.
The second night, we again walked across the street and brought back Afgan food and Japenesse food from the Public Market. It worked out nicely after a day of sight seeing to just stay in to eat. The kids were too tired to go back out after a long day of walking around the city.
My husband and I went to the hotel bar the second evening for some decompressing and a beer, and we found the bartender to be delightful. He was very nice and fun to chat with. We discussed bitters and a locally made Gin. We even sampled a few unusual items.
This hotel served our needs perfectly. We will stay here again. Its proximity to the city, free parking and breakfast and close spots for dinner make this an ideal place to stay with a family while checking out the nearby sites.

We needed a place to stay to visit friends in Oakland and San Francisco without spending a fortune and this place turned out to be perfect. Even the so called basic room we were assigned was clean, functional and modern. Super comfy bed too !! The only thing you should possibily avoid at this place is their breakfast buffet. Mediocre food at best, staff not ready there to deal with missing forks or condiments. Other than that this is a great hotel even if you visit San Francisco, with the Bay Bridge right out of the hotel it's only a 10 minutes drive.

Very happy with our stay. We had a Kitchen King Suite, it was very spacious and convenient. Restaurant on site with breakfast included was just what we needed. We chose this hotel for the location as we were catching the Amtrak to Reno early the next morning so we had plenty of time for breakfast and then a short stroll to the train. Even though the train was close you could not hear them at night. I would be very happy to recommend this hotel and would stay there again anytime.

My husband and I stayed here while visting our daughter in Oakland. It is convenient to the freeways, and other parts of the Oakland area. The room was spacious, clean and quiet even though it is next to the train station. The breakfast was wonderful - lots of choices, good quality, nice room for eating. If interested, there are lots of shops in the area. Would stay here again.
