We drove along the most romantic HW 1 from Eureka to San Francisco this summer. It was late afternoon and we decided to stop in ELK for the night. At first there was nobody at the office/reception of Greenwood Pier Inn when I walked in. Elk is that type of place where doors are not locked over night and you feel completely safe. Margot, the owner(?) appeared shortly after and offered me the last room in her premises: "La Petite Oiseau" for $135 plus tax. I went to see the room first and followed her to a wooden two storey white building right on the cliff that is portrayed on their flyers and website. To say the least it was really 'petite'! I think it was the smallest hotel room we have ever stayed in. But it was fine for a night and we had access to a den with fireplace and a terrace on the cliff. Margot seemed to feel my hesitation and offered me a decent bottle of wine and a breakfast on the house. The deal was sealed.
The location is what makes this place special. The building and surroundings seem to have suffered over time and could need a face lift, but we just enjoyed the vista from the terrace and a walk down to the beach before sunset.
We did not have a chance to try their restaurant which seemed quite good.
