I won this on PL one night before my stay started (it has been "awhile" since i have traveled) for a price that was reasonable (under $100 for two nights)...overall, there's some good and a few negatives of course.
One thing that annoyed me were some loud people that I could hear while sleeping, and who should STFU at night when most people sleep. I saw a few sketchy folk around the property, who looked like they do fit in the demographics of the city (read Citydata on El Cajon), including one guy who wouldn't stop talking to the desk clerk when I was checking in at around 7 PM.
As for location, this QI is located right near the border of La Mesa, but falls on the side of EC. While I did mention that some of the people that stayed there at the same time looked sketchy, many of the other hotels in the city are located in the middle of town, where I probably would not want to be. This property just has the freeway and the MTS tracks to contend with, so it isn't so bad (but could be worse). If anything, the local area of EC is best traversed during the day (I went to Walmart, Marshalls, etc.); if you want to eat or shop at night, go to La Mesa (there's a Walmart there too, and then some). Also, getting on the freeway is kind of tricky.
The room itself is slightly dated, but quaint with decent amenities (fridge, microwave), and is adequately clean (bed, bathroom). This time, I came down to SD solo without a friend so I had the bed to myself. The room itself is quiet, but I heard a lot of talking on Friday night outside my room. The breakfast is pretty good, as everyone else has said, and you won't be craving McDonald's for sure.
While my aim was to be close to La Jolla this weekend (anything west was probably more $), this hotel wouldn't be bad for someone needing to stay in this part of town, and for a few nights. While La Mesa is much more desirable to live and stay, this hotel has more pluses than minuses. I would probably give this place a slightly better rating than Heritage Inn in La Mesa, just because it wasn't overcrowded, and the fact that I didn't miss this place.
