“Great band and music”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

Not a great restaurant, so eat somewhere else before going. But a great band and opportunity to dance to swing and Big Band music. They also play a scattering of modern songs arranged in a Big Band style. Even a rock-and-roll song once in a while. But predominantly Swing Era music and old standards. You have to pay $7 per person to get in when the band is there (Thursday evenings) and have to buy a minimum of 1 drink per person. They charge you at least $5 for the first drink, even if it's lower than that on the menu. Then the second drink is whatever the price is on the menu. So the minimum you will spend is $12 per person, not including food. And the band has a tip jar you may want to put some cash into as well. The food, in my experience, is average Chinese food, nothing special. In fact I was disappointed in a couple of dishes I ordered. So I would not recommend eating here. If you bring your own bottle of wine, there is a $10 fee. The band is well worth all this rigamarole and they are top-notch musicians and there are always a couple of singers. They play from 7 to 8:15 and take a short break while the recorded Electric Slide is played, then play from 8:30 to 9:30. So dress up a little, put on your dancing shoes and have a good time to authentic Swing Era and Big Band era songs.

Thanks for the kind words and glowing review of the band. Unfortunately, the Lucky Star Chinese Restaurant has gone out of business. However, The Moonlight Serenade Orchestra continues playing Big Band music on Thursdays. now at Tango Del Rey in Pacific Beach, same hours (7:00 to 9:30) as before. Cover charge is now $10, but there is no minimum. Come dance with us!

“Go to dance, or just to listen - they're great!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

If you're a fan of Big Band music, and/or if you love to dance, The Moonlight Serenade Orchestra at the Lucky Star Restaurant every Thursday night is the place to be! They play all the wonderful classic tunes, together with more contemporary Latin and popular dance music. It's rare to be able to dance to a Big Band that really has that swing, and they do!

The dance floor is large and frequently full. Whether you're a beginner or experienced dancer, the atmosphere is very welcoming. We go early and have Chinese food for dinner before the band starts, but the main attraction for us is the music.

“The place to be for great music!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

We most certainly recommend the Moonlight Serenade orchestra at the Lucky Star restaurant. We enjoy the good music provided by the band and we love to watch the various dancers as the orchestra plays different kinds of music catered to the dancers. Food is good but the music is great!!!

If you are looking for the sounds of the big band era along with a big dance floor...then check out the scene at the Lucky Star.
