“DISAPPOINTMENT in the desert!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2012

It is sooo sad when a place you have enjoyed on several visits changes without warning!
Areola's WAS a low key clothing optional experience with a nice warm outdoor pool, indoor pool(even warmer) and a staff who were pleasant although never actually welcoming or really helpful.
We always overlooked the lackadaisical management style because we really enjoyed the natural hot springs water in the pools and the freedom to swim and sun in the nude!!
Yesterday we returned early after only spending 1 night(we had planned on 2) because without warning the "rules" changed!! We understand that sometimes a group takes over the hotel and then there is no room for others to come. THIS time a group had not taken over the entire place so we were booked to be there and NEVER told that the quiet clothing optional resort we enjoyed was turning into an event that included a DJ and would only allow us to be topless. You folks who don't ordinarily go to clothing optional resorts may not understand why this was a deal breaker for us!! It was the total lack of consideration for us as previous guests that made us feel NOone cared if we were happy or not during our visit!! NO consideration = NEVER returning!

First time at a clothing optional spa and loved it. The people are so friendly and the staff are a amazing. We arived late and they left the key out for us. It felt so wonderful to relax in the spa and going swimming at 11:00 at night.
We BBQ, met new freinds and hung out all day enjoying the warm sunshine. I felt so comfortable being there and can't wait to go back.
Thank you Kathy for being an exceptional host. Almost forgot to mention Cinna, you are the host with most.
Y and Peter

Room Tip: The suites have an amazing view of the mountains.

Called this morning to make sure that I could use their spa pool and was told that I couldn't arrive until noon, which was fine since I had an hour drive to get there. I was very excited to soak in the hot springs and allow my body to absorb sunshine. I got there just after noon and found the front door locked. I rang the bell 3 times...no answer, I walked around to the other side and could find no one. It's a junky way to run a business. What a waste of my time and my gas money! I'll find somewhere else to go.

Areolas Hotel and Spa is a great place to relax with friends and soak up the sun. We spent a weekend there recently with friends, old and new. The small number of rooms and the warm pool and spa contribute to the cozy and friendly atmosphere and encourage getting to know the other guests. The facility is typical of older buildings in Desert Hot Springs and the new owner is making great strides in improving the facility. In any case, the rooms are very accommodating, clean with flat screen TVs and great beds. Best of all, the manager, Kathy, is most gracious and accommodating, attentive to every request and need. We recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing weekend and a place to share a great time with friends. Thanks, Kathy

Room Tip: Room 4 has the best layout although next to the (mostly quiet) street

Kathy & Don made my woman and I feel so at home-we were at Aerolas for the Thanksgiving holiday and could not have made a better choice.

The hotel is older but in good shape, the mineral bath & pool are sparkling clean-no chlorine that I could tell and the room was perfect.

They were beyond accommodating and we sincerely appreciate our time there-romance, reconnection, rest, taking in the waters, and quite simple tranquil

Will be back in January (this was our first visit btw)

We are avid Tripadvisor researchers when looking for a place. We were looking for a clothing optional resort to relax and get some sun. We are not "lifestylers" so didn't want an open sex place like Sea Mountain Inn. We enjoy the sensuality of clothing optional resorts but are not into seeing sex or "hookin' up" with others. We saw a recent review that made us wonder about Areola's. Kathy, the manager, assured us that the one bad apple who had been highlighted in a recent review had been "86'd" for life. Boy, were we happy we went. Areolas is a true oasis in the desert. Sure, it was built in the '50s but everything was impeccably clean and the beds were the most comfortable we have ever enjoyed at even 5 star resorts. The hot mineral water pool and spa made our skin feel like silk and the other couples were warm and open. We felt like we had the best Caribbean escape at a very low cost escape in the desert of CA. Oh, and the weather was perfect. The weekend was fun and active and the weekdays were like a private sensual escape. I recommend Areolas especially for couples who have not tried a clothing optional resort before or seasoned nudists too. It was perfect. Try a massage while you are there too. The best.

Room Tip: All open right out to the pool. All are clean and comfortable. Choose a room based on your needs.

We are nudists and are not into alternative lifestyles or swinging, we simply enjoy relaxing in our birthday suits. We were not aware that this was a place for mate swapping until someone started grabbing me in the pool. We spent most of the afternoon laying by the pool being forced to listen/trying to ignore moaning groaning and howling from the rooms that are ALL literally about 10 steps from the pool. I believe in freedom-of-choice but I also believe that you should respect other guests and not impose your behavior on them. Kathy (the manager) seemed either high, completely oblivious, or else she simply condones this behavior as she did nothing to stop it. Some tramp was literally going from man-to-man around the pool, making offers. They need to figure out what kind of resort they wish to be and cater to that audience......this is not the place for nudists.

Room Tip: All of the rooms look the same. This is like a 1950's motel with a pool in the center
