“Falling Into Decay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2012

We've been staying here forever, as we just love Desert Hot Springs. But this past visit had me pensive about a return trip. I've given this place plenty of rave reviews over the years, but this last trip was a letdown. Which is a shame, as I'd hate to have to go find another place to stay in DHS.

First night there, the heater/AC did not work at all. You need the fan on to keep outside noises at bay, and since the unit wouldn't turn on, no luck on that. Ended up that the front desk needs to manually throw a switch so you can work it? WTF? They forgot to do so, consequently the ringing phone (or alarm) next door woke me up at six am. That totally sucked, as I had planned on sleeping in for a change. So it goes.

Later on during our second day there, the sink would not drain at all. The maintenance guy came in and said that old fish and other foods were clogging it. Seems that whoever cooked in there, on a hotplate, just washed their crap down the drain, where it got embedded.

Fridge was OK but the plastic shelving was broken, so you couldn't stash much food/drinks in there.

TV remote would only work if you stood in front of the tube. Very much a drag if you want to lie around and not manually switch channels. No channel guide in the room, so we had to call the front desk to find Comedy Central. If the remote had actually worked, we could have channel surfed, but that was not the case.

I asked the night manager if we could borrow the old crappy plastic table on our patio, to do some night skywatching. We had planned on putting our daughter's telescope on it, as opposed to balancing it on the back of our tailgate. He was very hesitant to let us take it off the property. We are spending $150 a night, surely we don't need to steal a ten dollar old plastic table, do we? I did not care for this at all.

People smoke all over the place, which is fine by me, BUT...it's totally gross when there are cigarette butts on the cement, right by the pools. Why can't people put their butts in the trashcan? Super gross, especially when it's next to the laptop pool, where there are plenty of kids.

Young lifeguard did something that was a complete turnoff to me and everyone else who was watching. A cockroach darted by one of the smaller pools, and instead of just letting the insect dash into the flower beds, he repeatedly tried to squash it. It took him three tries, and after he killed it, he left the dead carcass there. A good blast of wind would sail that thing right into one of the pools. Not thinking in the least.

I never thought we'd be thinking of trying a different hotel in DHS, but it seems that the time has come to do so. What a shame.

This is an especially hard review to respond to, as you have apparently been a very happy
Guest with us for some years now. I am forwarding your review to all responsible department heads, and we will give it serious discussion at our next company meeting. Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review, as we take all customer feedback very seriously. Hopefully it will help us to improve in the areas you discussed, and it goes without saying that we hope you will return and give us another chance to convert you back into the loyal, regular guest you once were.

We reserved well in advance and asked for quiet rooms. That is impossble in this hotel as the walls, about 50 years old, are paper thin. The pools looked nice but were simply packed, because the public and hotel guests share them. Since this is the case, the security is totally lax. Jenifer, the spa reservation clerk, was in a heated argument with her significant other while several of us waited to make arrangements for a massage. It took her over 5 minutes to get off the phone, and when one woman said :forget it, you are so rude" she took offense and demanded to know how she was being rude.....if you have to ask, Jennifer..... we ate the cost of a night's stay and headed to the Renaissance where, even though the White Party had started, the noise conditions we better than the Desert Hot Springs hotel. We might use the pools, but would neer, ever stay here again. There are so many better hotels for the same price all around the area, Also, saw the tell tale signs of bed bugs on the ancient mattresses, so the hotel may want to think about that.

I was a bit taken aback at the rundown look of this place. The locker rooms haven't been updated since about 1982 (they're actually disgusting), and the hotel rooms are in need of new beds and carpets. The front desk is understaffed, and the overall feeling is that there needs to be some customer service training. The bright side: the pools themselves are nicely maintained and relaxing. The grounds themselves are well maintained. The restaurant has some healthy choices, too, which is already nice when traveling.

Daryl at the spa did something no one has ever been able to do! I have a pinched nerve in my right arm (super-scapula nerve entrapment) I have had very limited and VERY painful movement in that arm for 20 years. I have paid therapists, professionals and even friends to massage my arm, thinking it would help. Those helped my back, and felt great...but never changed or relieved the pain in my arm. I had been to the spa before and had great massages from other massage therapists..DARYL has been the only one to make a difference! In fact, I can lift my arm over my head without restrictions. UNBELIEVABLE! And also true! Thanks Daryl, you have improved my quality of life greatly!

Been going to this place since I was a little kid in the 70s. Food is good for the price. The place seems to be being run on a shoestring. Pool & bathroom facilities are not just dirty but filthy!! I waited a hour for food and finally walked out and ended up at mc donnalds instead. Some waitress are good other younger waitress are not!! A complaint to management with a promise for a return call went unanswered. All I can assume is they don't care and already realize the place is going down hill. Enjoy your influx of snowbirds drunks and druggies but don't expect your regulars to stick around!!

This hotel has great pools, but is a bit run down (and certainly overpriced).

We got a room, and the two available keys - but none of them worked. We tried a number of times but couldn't get into the room! We had to get help from the reception, and were promised they would do something about the keys. Nothing happened. We contacted the reception again and after 1 hour we got a different room with working keys. There was a door towards the pool side too, but the lock was in such bad shape we didn't dare to use it. Someone had tried to break in, and the lock hadn't been changed.

We heard that other guests had had key problems too.

As the pools can be used all night there is a high risk of no sleep, if they get noisy guests. Stay somewhere else, but use the pools - they accept day use pool-guests - the pool area is great!
