5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2010

everything was wonderful, from greeting on arrival - oh & that view of the ocean from the lounge area - unbelievable! Beautiful modern, clean room-not over spacious, but perfectly adequate for 2 - & good sized bathroom with great shower. The only thing I could be picky about would be the wait for the room on arrival at 1pm-had to wait until
c 3:30-when check in is, I think 3pm, & we were told they would rush through cleaning-also slow on cleaning room some days- but then again we didn't rush to get out each day! The hotel is directly on the beach - wonderful family (& dog) friendly beach with life guards on duty-& areas for playing games set up. Hotel gets quite noisy on Friday & Saturday evenings when the locals come out to play, but it all added to the atmosphere & everyone seemed to go home by mid-night.
But the real gem here is the dining - kitchen 1540 has to be the best hotel restaurant we have eaten in- Paul McCabe & his staff are doing such a wonderful job-we would return again, & again to sample this food- we have found a gem in the L'Auberge - if you get the chance please, please stay here - you won't regret it

If you are planning a visit and are not part of the wedding party or bar scene, be SURE to ask for a room facing the spa side of the hotel. If you are facing the pool (the more expensive rooms do) you will be kept awake by all the festivities until well past 1am. There's also the train whistle every 20 minutes until after 1am. Bring ear plugs. Bring a sound machine. Anything you can to get some peace and quiet.

Loved the location and ambience of this hotel. Very comfortable bed, had a great night's sleep. Staff are knowledgeable about the area and very friendly. Elegantly laid back and would stay there again, only for a longer visit next time. Unfortunately was only able to stay for one night with breakfast in the morning, but the food was excellent.

Went for a couple days. This is the place to stay in Del Mar. Nice exercise walking the cliffs or beach in the morning, relax by the pool in the day and plenty of dining options at night. The location is the best. Rooms are small but decorated nicely. Food is very good, atmosphere is excellent. Some of the staff is a little amateur, some is excellent.
There were a lot of events/weddings, so noise or people in front of the room/patio are an issue. Otherwise a great place.

Our son lives in Del Mar, and highly recommended this hotel. It happened to also show up as #1 her on Tripadvisor and on LuxuryLink. He was sure my wife would like it based on its clean, elegant style. Our expectations for a hotel are high and L'Auberge met all of them.....well with a couple of small caveats.
Drive up is great...it is right in the heart of the small downtown Del Mar area on Hwy 1. Valet parking is required (see deal later). The design of the hotel being below Hwy 1 street level as it goes down the hill makes it feel remarkably removed from the road.
Front desk is friendly and has the remarkable ability to remember your name when you walk through the lobby days later in your stay.
One of the caveats...they advertise that they are on the beach...not quite. It is a short, pleasant walk down the hill, or through a condo complex to reach the very pretty Del Mar public beach. Cool mornings make for a great little walk to enjoy your coffee on a bench on a small cliffside overlooking the ocean.... it is not part of the hotel, but makes you feel like you are a resident of Del Mar....this is a good thing.
Another...the "superior" rooms face the courtyard/pool. Yeah..there can be a bit of noise at night..but the place is well insulated, and while our room was DIRECTLY on the patio where wedding parties took place, it was really not at all disturbing. And they shut it down before 11pm. Some rooms have their patio facing the drive-up parking area...not ideal for your patio, but it is such a small hotel it is easy to go to one of the public areas to sit and enjoy the sunset/ocean/ etc.
Restaurant...open kitchen make it a bit loud...the exhaust fan is pretty loud constant white noise. Food was excellent. The Wagyu beef was absolutely the best I have ever had. Fish..less so. Breakfasts delicious..if pricey.
I got a deal through luxury link dot com Use a coupon code and you will get $100 off a package. LUXURYLINK-WGPVIC My deal included breakfasts/parkiing/ one dinner/ resort fees/taxes/and a massage! All for about the price of the room.
Unfortunately my son may move to downtown San Diego from Del Mar....but we will absolutely try and make a return visit to L'Auberge.

Very comfortable stay. Our expectations were exceeded. I'm often a little skeptical of trendy hotels, as they tend to promise a lot and under deliver. L'Auberge promises a lot and over-delivered. The rooms was very comfortable. The food was fantastic (Kitchen 1540). And the spa services are top notch. You can always tell if a hotel truly cares about quality - when the spa services are awesome.

The only thing is that darn train that goes by often. Once you accept it as part of the beach life ambiance, it becomes an interesting part of the experience, vs a bothersome one. :-)

We stayed at L'Auberge since a wedding we were attending was being held there. Everything about the wedding was wonderful and I'm sure the bride and groom were very happy. However, I expected an equally wonderful experience with our room and stay and were quite disappointed. The first room we had was in a corner facing the parking entrance and was noisy all night long. The second room was directly behind the pool bar and though not noisy, the bar area blocked any view that might have been. When we asked why some guests, paying the same rate, received much better locations and views, we were told that the 'rack rate' just guarantees a room. My advice is to overpay so that you have a decent location.
