Our son attends USD so we often travel down to San Diego from SF to see him and grab some vacation time. We have stayed in many locations in the area but decided to head a little north this time to Del Mar as we had driven by and loved the look of the village.
The Auberge itself feels very small, but has quite a few floors and rooms. The rooms are beach classic in looks; clean natural colors and comfy furniture. ( a wee bit frayed around the edges, but I'm a complete stickler and my husband said no one else would have noticed) We were there for 3 nights and 4 days in total.
We stayed in the standard room, which was quite nice - we had no view, but it was nice to have a verandah to sit out and have a glass of wine on. No tub in the bathroom, which was absolutely fine, but the bathroom itself was lovely, all marble and very upscale furnishings and shower with glass surround. The staff was wonderful - it felt like we were in a much smaller hotel as everyone was very kind and yet professional and went out of their way to help us find locations, rental bikes, restaurants, and best ways to get into town. You have to hand it to the valets as well - not only do they deal with a very small porte cochere, but there was a sizable wedding going on and guests were arriving not just to stay but to attend the wedding or eat at one of the onsite restaurants, and they were not only cheerful but took the time to give directions and ask us how our day was going.
Very California laid-back vibe but totally efficient.
We ate and drank at the Waterfall Terrace on 2 occasions and it was lovely to be able to watch the sun set over the water from our perch. Food was very good - California fresh farm-to-table etc. We also had room service, which was quite good and delivered in a very short time. The ONLY very minor problem was - no HBO! Game of Thrones was premiering and I ended up watching on my iPad. What 4 star property doesn't have HBO?? I realize you are on vacation and should not be watching tv, however....it's Game of Thrones on a Sunday night! In any case...we will be back. (PS Wi-fi was great - not slow or cutting out whatsoever on my GOT streaming)
Location was wonderful - just a short walk down to the beach and a nice park overlooking the beach, walkable to the entire village, easy to get to the 5 and San Diego, or to the racetrack if that's your thing, and many varied restaurants (Chinese, Mexican, fish, steak, etc.). Nice to be near SD but not IN it. :-)
