“Del Mar - San Diego”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

Upon my last evening in San Diego, I chose to stay at the Hilton, San Diego Del Mar. Having stayed there before, I knew the property was excellent and that the staff was always at the top of their game. Just before sunset, you can see the hot air balloons lift off to the east of the property. They are so colorful and seem to glide gently over the hills to the east of Del Mar. The Hotel has very large and nice rooms. The property is well taken care of and although there is valet parking available, self parking is free. Would recommend this Hotel to anyone that is staying in San Diego North County for a visit.

Room Tip: For Gold or Diamond Hilton Honors members, they put on evening wine and horderves. They also put on...

The rooms are great, however, the guests upstairs were very active and I heard every step. The lobby and common areas are clean and well maintained...the poolside is very nice. My complaints start with the executive lounge breakfast. Scrambled eggs everyday it seemed. I noticed on the restaraunt buffet, there was yogurt. Not being an egg eater, I asked the attendant in the executive lounge if they had yogurt. She replied no, sorry. I thought she would have directed me to the main buffet to get a cup of yogurt...no chance...just a straight up no. Fine. I asked the front desk the next morning if the buffet in the lobby for the restaraunt was free for Gold and Diamond members, she replied no. I explained to her that I don't eat eggs and was just looking for some yogurt to eat with my granola in the executive lounge. Nope...they're VERY protective of their yogurt, apparently. The executive lounge seems to have everything the main buffet does except yogurt! Hmmm. The evening "hors deurves" were quite nice...heavy, almost a meal. The gentleman that worked in there seemed to forget to put out the proper utensils frequently but he was only there for a few days during my visit. The young lady in the evening was very thorough and attentive. I guess my suggestion would be to stay here if you have no frequent stayer status but if your Gold or Diamond, pick another Hilton property...they don't seem to go out of their way for the loyal guests.

My stay was not perfect, and there were some definite issues, but the important thing is that the front desk staff took care of every issue in a very timely and professional manner. They definitely treat their guests with respect. Good breakfast.

We stayed at this hotel over Thanksgiving with our son's soccer team. It was our second trip to Del Mar this year. During our first trip the team stayed at Holiday Inn Express in Solana Beach. There is truly NO comparison between the two properties. Hilton trumps Holiday in every category except proximity to the beach.

The Hilton was extremely accommodating for a large group of ten and eleven year olds. The rooms were clean and comfortable. There is a great pool and spa area with plenty of seating. They have a great outdoor fire pit. The breakfast that was included in our package was great. The hotel bar is an open area accessible by all ages with a great menu for adults and kids alike. The staff was friendly (except for one extremely rude doorman/valet chief). The price was reasonable and the location was perfect for Surf Cup.

My husband is a busy overworked real estate appraiser so we don't have time to plan out a long extended vacation for our December anniversary. We have two young children and really need time away. Since we live in Carlsbad, California, and have lived in San Diego county for 8 years we decided to stay close. This Hilton is perfectly located near everyting fun in Del Mar. In 23 hours, we were able to do more than we do in two months worth of "Date Nights". From the moment we arrived in the valet cirular drive we were greeted with a kind "Hello" and "Welcome to Dal Mar Hilton", and attended courtesly by the check-in desk. Your room card is also a gate key which allows you to enter a gated parking lot. I like that your door key, gate card, is also a security card which allows you to enter the security locked gates. No need to worry, this is a very safe nice neighborhood located directly across the street from the Del Mar race track. We walked the premises, and brought out luggage into our room, primped and decided on a restaurant from Happy Hour. We could have sat at the bar for Happy Hour, but my heart was set on the Brigantine for it's location facing the Race Track that during this season is lit up by Christmas lights, and facing the other side of the bar at the Brigantine is the ocean. After Brigantine and delicious appetizers, we returned to our hotel to relax in the jacuzzi. It was perfectly heated, and clean towels were located on a shelf near the jacuzzi/pool area. After meeting some very lovely guests from Napa, we headed back to the room. After a shower and a change of attire, we headed for the Hilton's bar. They had two very nice bar tenders, and a nice selection of appetizers and dinner meals. We chose steak. It was cooked perfectly. They have big screen TV's, and nice big fireplace. We should have chose to go outside and snuggle near the firepit. It was a perfect starry night to do so. Back to the room for a little TV watching, and rest...something that parents with small kiddos don't get much of...The room accomodations were great. We were located on the freeway side of the hotel, and never heard a sound. The bed felt new...great sleep. Next morning was check out, but before we did, we had a wonderful breakfast in the buffet area. This was a memorable 23 hour getaway. We will recommend this location to any family members or friends visiting San Diego.

Liked this hotel, gives more of a racecourse vibe than a beach vibe. Loved the decor (modern classic - think dark wood, grey and purple), and the sheets. The pool area is lovely, they have a fire pit which is great in the evenings. The newer looking outdoor sitting furniture was great, but some of the older chair cushions look like they have been left out in the rain a few too many times. Good to average service. Breakfast was nice but nothing special. You can order eggs to order if you get the buffet, but they didn't offer it to me (was informed by another guest). Would be a nice location for a wedding group or party.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in the high or low range (close to the entrance). Rooms on the far side are a bit...

Very nice hotel, more like a mini resort. Very friendly staff. We had free internet as a promotion that weekend plus we opted for an upgrade that included breakfast and happy hour snacks which wa swell worth it.
