When we were looking for a dog friendly hotel for a recent trip to San Diego, we found Hotel Les Artistes. As a former resident of the area, i recalled seeing the hotel on Hwy. 101 many times, but had never been inside. It's an old style Spanish facade with red tile roof, it sits just off the old highway. It's website show rooms themed to various artists; Degas, Erte, Monet, etc. but not too kitschy. One room cauhgt our eye, with its simple decor - the Furo room.

turns out "Furo" is Japanese for "bath", so beware the little area in the corner of the tiny bathroom that looks like a shallow shower pan. It's actually waist deep. My wife fell in, and was not happy about it.

Also, as regards the title of this review, the photos make the place - the room, the "balcony" - appear much large than actual size. We invited some friends to meet us at the hotle with the idea of sitting out on this balcony and sipping some vino, but had to retract the invitation, because it's too small for 4 people, even if we all stood.

it seems the place is trying for a funky/cute atmosphere, but it misses.
And where you see the phrase on the website about "respecting our guests privacy", what that actually menas is there is no staff member around to quiet noisy guests at 1 AM.

If your goal is to have small room in which to cosy up with a new love and get jiggy, this might be the "romantic" place you had in mind. But beware...you can hear everything around you and they can hear you, too.

I found this hotel randomly on the internet when searching for a place to stay in Del Mar for the horse races. I looked it up on Trip Advisor & it sounded great. We wanted 4 rooms for 4 couples. Everyone was excited about this unique little place, rather than the big chain hotels. I called June 30th & the owner told me they don't take reservations for August until the 1st week of July. Should have been my first clue this wasn't going to go well; June 30th is the last day of June. Ok, though, so I call the next morning, July 1st. Again the owner; he tells me he'll need to have the "reservationist" call me. It goes back & forth like this for 5 days. The owner would not take my credit card information & reserve the rooms for me, and I could never get ahold of the reservationist - we kept missing each other. Finally, I call her on the 6th day and she says she's sorry, but they only have 2 of the nicer rooms left, and 2 very small ones with only double beds because people kept calling and reserving rooms!!!! I called every day to try and make my reservation, because I had 8 people counting on me, and the owner would not reserve the rooms for me. Is it really that hard to keep track of 10 rooms?! We go to San Diego a lot but will never stay at this hotel - it was ridiculous.

I was given the task of finding a hotel/inn for a one-night getaway for my husband and I. Our in-laws offered to watch our 2-year-old daughter for the night, and we were excited about the chance to spend uninterrupted time together. I read about Les Artistes in a guidebook, and then read the reviews on this website. We are always up for adventure, so I called to make the reservation.
The manager was very helpful, and recommended their newest room, the DeLempicka room. It had a king-size bed, a jacuzzi tub, and an ocean-view balcony. When I walked into the room, I fell in love with it. The ocean breezes that blew in through the open balcony door were dreamy, and the room decor was charming. Very romantic, and I grew to like De Lempicka's art (he's a Czechoslovakian artist, look him up if not familiar). We had dinner at the Pacifica del Mar restaurant, in the Del Mar Plaza, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The Inn is one-of-a-kind, with each room completely different. I think it's great they allow dogs, and there are a lot of outdoor seating areas where you can drink a cup of coffee or tea, and read the local paper. Don't expect high-end amenities, but they did give us nice large towels, and waffle-weave bathrobes. The TVs are small, but we never turned ours on. They have complimentary coffee every morning, also. We had a great breakfast at the Stratford Court Cafe just down the street.
Thank you to Les Artistes for one night of heaven!

Amazing food. The filet is incredible and very large. Best restaurant we ate at in Tremblant.

i loved this little motel. not for all-very artsy-each room is done w/ dif artist theme-e.g.-we stayed in the monet room. loved that we were right downtown and could walk everywhere-beach, dinner etc.... small, private hotel. liked that they showed us all rooms available and that we could pick which one to stay in. pretty clean but not sparkling.
