“Preferred Picnic Day Lodging”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2014

Our extended extended family reserved several rooms here for Picnic Day. Several of us arrived by Amtrak...so convenient, the train station is a 1 minute walk from the hotel. Rooms were large and comfortable. Even though Davis has great restaurants, we ate all our dinners at the hotel because it has a great menu and friendly staff. The breakfast arrangement was confusing to us and didn't really work.

Thank you for sharing your recent stay at the Hallmark Inn at UC Davis during Picnic Day. The train is truly the most efficient mode of transportation in/out of town on these special event weekends. Our location is truly the best for finding an array of restaurants to meet any required tastes but it is very nice to know you found the Seasons restaurant worthy of all your dinners. I apologize if the breakfast service in Cafe 110 was confusing as this was their first Picnic Day. The team is working diligently on their processes to make service flow more efficiently for future special event weekends. We look forward to your visit next Picnic Day! Sincerely, Marisa Schaffer

The comfort of the Hallmark Inn was outstanding: the covers on the bed were just right, the HVAC worked well, the green policies and amenities were outstanding, and the Wi-Fi was solid and fast. Above all the rooms were quiet despite being across the street from the Amtrak station.

Food choices nearby are overwhelming and of superior quality, and you can walk easily to just about anything you'll need while in town (and a lot you don't need, but is fun and interesting!)

I'd also say this is the first place I've stayed that has an Eames chair in the room. All in all, it was a delightful stay and I hope to return to Davis where I'll stay at the Hallmark.

The location is perfect for a visit to Davis, or a visit to UC Davis. We enjoyed the happy hour the night of our arrival, and made use of the limited but very adequate workout room. We took a quick walk around the neighborhood and found a myriad of places to eat, most with both indoor and outdoor seating. After dinner, we made our way back to the Cream Ice Cream Store (DELICIOUS!) downstairs from the hotel and then walked 1/2 block back to the City Hall (now a bar) to listen to some live music. Great visit.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the train.

We stayed at the Hallmark Inn this last weekend for the 100th Picnic Day at UC Davis. The hotel is in the perfect location; we walked everywhere, and literally did not move the car until we left Davis to come home. The room is large and well appointed. We particularly appreciated the comfortable chair under a reading light; too often hotels do not have a place to sit in the room. This comfy chair was in addition to the desk and chair also in the room.

The breakfast was very good. An $8.50 credit was provided towards breakfast, which was enough to get a really good scramble made to order. Coffee and Juice were included; a latte or espresso type drink would cost a couple of dollars extra. A breakfast bread pudding, sweet rolls, oatmeal were also available. We only had the scrambles, which were delicious.

One thing to be aware of is that the train tracks are really close...as in, across the parking lot. Our room had a balcony that overlooked the parking lot and faced the train tracks. The room had a double sliding glass door (literally, two heavy doors!) that cut the noise from the train considerably. The train does come at night, but the noise was not enough to wake us.

The hotel is in the heart of downtown, and is an easy to walk to the UC and the entire town. There are lots of good eats very close to the hotel, including Cream, a dessert place right next door. We didn't try it, but it must have been good because there was ALWAYS a really long line, and it smelled great! There is also a movie theatre across the street. I would definitely stay at the Hallmark Inn the next time I am in Davis.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the train tracks if you are a light sleeper.

Trust me. Stay here. You will not be disappointed. The hotel make over in the common areas is fantastic. If you want to be close to everything, have a very good breakfast included, and get a happy hour with very pleasant staff - and guests - this is you place. For those of you who don't know, Davis is a biking town. Bikes available here with no charge.

You will NOT be disappointed!!!

On behalf of the entire team at the Hallmark Inn, Thank you, for sharing your thoughts. We are extremely proud of our new lobby--F Street Art Gallery and it is a wonderful place for visitors to meet with family/friends. Our bicycles have been so well received we are now considering adding more to the fleet...of course at no charge to our overnight guests. We look forward to seeing you on your next visit to Davis- Sincerely, Marisa Schaffer

Hallmark Inn has some great features and a few small issues. Their staff is extremely friendly and seems to honestly want you to enjoy your stay. The "made-to-order breakfast" (which is actually more of a "choose one of the following", but still very good) is a big plus, but the cafe is small and on Picnic Day it was nearly impossible to find a seat.

The location of the hotel is great for exploring Downtown Davis. But because of its proximity to train tracks and a busy downtown street, the hotel is very noisy. The rooms are spacious with a comfortable, well-appointed bed and a desk and chair as well as a very nice leather chair and ottoman. The bathroom is decent-sized and has a pull-out magnifying mirror (HUGE plus for aging guests who wear contacts!) but they put the Keurig coffeemaker IN the bathroom, just a foot or so away from the toilet. Great feature; wrong place to put it, IMO.

Ultimately, since I have a daughter at UC Davis; when I want to stay closer to Davis' quaint downtown area, I will stay here. When I want closer access to the school, I will choose the Hyatt Place. Both have train noise and small issues, but still provide some decent perks.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the "F street" side, third floor. You will still have some noise if it...

Thank you for sharing your experience during your recent stay to the Hallmark Inn at UC Davis. This was Cafe 110's first Picnic Day so they are working on ways to expedite their procedures to handle service more efficiently while utilizing the Courtyard patio for additional seating. I am happy you found our central location and spacious rooms to your liking with the recent amenity upgrades such as the Keurig coffee maker. I appreciate your feedback and we are evaluating an alternative location that allows for access to power/water. We look forward to the opportunity of a future visit and be sure you utilize the bicycles as a way to enjoy the downtown even more. Sincerely, Marisa Schaffer

We choose this hotel for the great location to downtown. It was perfect- easy walking distance to everything. It also has a great breakfast, complimentary happy hour in the afternoon, nice outdoor pool area (although it would be nice to have indoor pool &/or a hot tub) & the staff was always very friendly! There are also complimentary bikes you can use to ride which is a great option for something different to do. I would recommend bringing a sound machine or using an app on your phone as there is a train that goes by every few hours, all through the night. My husband never heard it as he is a heavy sleeper; I, on the otherhand, am a very light sleeper and it woke me up the first night. I then used a sound machine the next night and it didn't wake me up at all! Overall, great place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a pool view instead of the street view- less noise!

On behalf of the team at the Hallmark Inn, thank you for sharing your experience during your recent stay. Our location definitely puts you central to the happenings of the downtown area. The next time you are in town save a little time to take a ride on the bicycles through the Arboretum....it is a wonderful excursion. With all the recent renovations our outdoor patio area has really become a wonderful place for guests to enjoy in or out of the pool. Although we have dual paned & double insulated the rooms facing the train we offer complimentary ear plugs for the asking at our Front Desk. Looking forward to the opportunity of your next stay- Sincerely, Marisa Schaffer
