“Perfect for the Fourth of July”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

My daughter and I had such a great trip in April in this area, so we decided to go back for more and take in the art festivals. Dana Point didn't seem that far when we were staying in Laguna, and we decided we wanted a full service resort. The resort had everything you would want and they upgraded us to an ocean view at no additional charge. The room was comfortable and pleasantly decorated. Ocean view here us not the same as it was in Laguna Beach for sure. It's far away and there are many trees in the view. This is a lively resort with activities going on all the time along with the noise. Great breakfast buffet. Marina gave me an excellent facial! The reason for the lower score on service is due to the lackadaisical valet service. They act like they don't see you standing there for a surprising amount of time, and there was no offer to help with our luggage when we checked in. The guy was standing there at the back of our car, flirting with my daughter while I took out all our luggage. The restaurant seemed understaffed as well, but it was the Fourth of July week. We felt staying in Dana Point was a bit too out of the way for the things we wanted to do. I feel as though this is why most hotels that far south are big resorts. It's better if you just want to stay there and not go anywhere. They do have everything.

Thank you for your review. We are delighted that you spent your 4th of July weekend with us and that we provided everything you wanted to make your stay complete. We hope you found yourself relaxed and rejuvenated after your facial. We agree with you, the resort offers such wonderful amenities that it makes it difficult to want to leave the resort. We do regret that your valet experience was unsatisfactory. We take your comments very seriously and will address your concerns with our valet staff. Usually we receive many fine compliments from our guests regarding our valet service and we hope you will look upon this incident you experienced as an exception and not the rule.

First time out to Southern California with the family. Wanted to get in a great beach stop for a few days. While the resort itself is gorgeous, a few things would not make us go back...

1) Booked online and called to confirm room. Asked for 2 beds in the room since there would be four of us, they were only able to give us a king with a pull out bed fit for one. And they ran out of rollaway beds, so stuck with three people on a king...not ideal.

2) As many have already pointed out, all the extra charges are not worth the added expense.

3) During our stay the hot water was not working for a period of time. It was around dinner time, so after a day in the pool, it was either a cold shower or no shower. Every time we called to get an update they kept just saying "soon...check in about an hour".

4) Pools were crowded and no chairs to be had. Both pools had waiting lists for chairs. There seemed to be a wedding during the one night, so that may be why it was so crowded. Just not ideal for a family getaway.

5) TV continued to not have sound for many of the channels. The maintenance person showed me how I can fix it, but it just shouldn't happen.

WIth all the problems, they front desk only offered to take off the extra $20 resort fee. For a 2 night stay with crowded pools, wrong room, and no hot water, it didn't seem like compensation.

And if you are looking for a typicaly beach town for CA, I would not choose Dana Point. Great if you want to go boating or to Catalina, but not if you're looking to stay on a beach for the day.

Thank you for your review. We appreciate your feedback and regret that you were not completely satisfied during your stay. Unfortunately as stated at time of booking, rooms cannot be guaranteed and are based upon availability. We understand that during your stay our occupancy was high and we could not accommodate all of your requests. Please understand that our staff tries their best to ensure that all guest requests are met, however this is not possible at all times. We are happy to hear that our maintenance team was able to fix your hot water and turn on the sound to your television. We thank you for your patience and for sharing your experience with us.

Dana Point and this hotel represent a perfect base camp for travelers planning excursions into both LA and Sand Diego. We spent a couple days in the local area also and found it to be a worthy destination in its own right. The hotel has maintained its original boutique feel and does not resemble a chain hotel. There was even a conference our first day and we did not feel any impact from it. The staff is exceptional; one of the best I have encountered. The pool area is quite nice and family friendly. The service is excellent and they offer daycare should you want to plan a couples event without the kids.
Our experience with the on-property Hertz counter was most disappointing. I planned on avoiding the $32 valet parking by renting from Hertz and returning on the same day; thus avoiding overnight parking fees. This did not work out well. The location is understaffed and lacks sufficient inventory. We spent an inordinate amount of time checking out cars in the morning. On our last day, the car was not clean and smelled of stale cigarette smoke. This is not the hotel’s fault. Just rent a car from the airport (OC is closest and avoids LA traffic) and pay the valet fee. There isn’t any place else to park around here so just budget for this to avoid feeling “nickel and dimed”. Same goes for the resort fee, see below. We also had an unfortunate issue with the on-property restaurant but management immediately dealt with it in a most impressive way. The food itself was quite good.
Pros and cons for platinum: upgraded to full ocean view (quite nice). Access to spa facilities (had no time to utilize but nice). General VIP treatment from staff. No free breakfast. No free Internet. No free parking. Charged a resort fee. This includes Internet but also all kinds of fun equipment rentals. Full list on website. Not too bad if you are active. It's very much in line with competing properties. I know we platinums hate nickel and dime fees but just set realistic expectations and move on. This is a unique property and you get what you pay for.
It is a short walk to Doheny state beach and lantern bay County Park. Good beach, clean and well maintained. The park shows movies on a large, outdoor screen on the weekends. Our son watched the Lorax from the perfect view given by our balcony. The marina also offers jet ski rentals.

Harbor Grill, home of the best swordfish (Japanese style) I’ve ever had. Served with Clam chowder, garlic mash and cobbler for desert. They have a wood-fired grill in the kitchen that is quite impressive. My wife opted for the lobster prepared on this grill. Amazing. We went back twice.
El Torito, home of the best fajitas I’ve ever had. Mine were mixed chicken and steak. The chicken was good but the steak was phenomenal. We also enjoyed fresh guacamole prepared tableside. I can still taste it.
Even the Denny's here was delicious. Maybe food just tastes better in California. The restaurant had a charming 50's diner design which I suspect is what it originally was. We ate here every morning. The food and service were excellent and we saved a bunch of money.
The surrounding location is really quite charming. There is a nice park next door that show movies on a large outdoor screen on the weekends. Our son watched Finding Nemo from our balcony. There is also a nice beach within a short walk. On the other side of the property is an epic 118 step staircase that leads to a marina with some amazing restaurants.
Disneyland:

A bucket list experience. Not so much for the rides (lots of out of orders while we were there) but the pageantry is what makes this place special: parade, fireworks, Fantasmic, meeting characters (an 8yr old getting a fist bump from goofy is priceless). Disneyland may have the best and most friendly staff on the planet. It has become quite expensive. It is still worth it but set high cost expectations in advance to avoid being frustrated. The lines brutal. Fast pass was not a benefit the day we went. Half of the attractions were closed or out of order or booked for entire day. Just stand in line. Bring your fully charged phones, tablets, portable game systems, etc. to help pass the wait times. Bring a hat. Mouse ears are fun but 12 hours in the sun demands a hat with a bill or sunscreen. It is going to be a long day, plan for rest prior and recovery after.
Legoland:
This is a fun location for younger kids. The water park is fun and there is a pretty good roller coaster. The weekend we were there featured a full-sized, fixed wing fighter from Star Wars made entirely of legos. That was quite impressive. Other than that It’s a fun one-day experience but we probably won’t go back. If we do we will stay at the onsite hotel to avoid commuting.
Sea World:
One of the top highlights of our visit. The whole park is wonderful. You can spend multiple days here or just come back every year for a great time that never gets old. Our highlights included dinner with Shamu and the Shamu Rocks show, the sea lion and dolphin shows (you can swim with dolphins now!), and the behind the scenes tour. Have you ever seen a nursing dolphin or pet a shark? Do the behind the scenes show. Sew World fun for every age. The park is quite clean and well staffed also.
San Diego Zoo Safari Park:
As impressive as the SD zoo is we don’t go there anymore. We opt for the Safari Park instead. You really need at least two full days to hit everything. The plains exhibit is beyond description. There are hundreds of animals without cages living as they would in their natural habitat. There are several different safari packages to choose from that range from an exterior tour of the plains (and an amazing up-close look at the mountain goat enclosure) to a 4hr tour of the plains that includes feeding giraffes and rhinos. We have hit all the major tourist attractions Calif

Room Tip: Pay for the ocean view balcony upgrade. It's wonderful.

Wow! Thank you for your detailed review. We are delighted that you had such a wonderful time with your family at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa. We enjoy reading the activities our guests participated in during their stay and it sounds like you all had a wonderful time experiencing the different amusement parks and local restaurants. We agree that we are the perfect base camp between Los Angeles and San Diego. We appreciate all of your wonderful compliments regarding our attentive staff. We do apologize for any inconvenience the Hertz Rental Car service may have caused you. They are in fact a company that is not part of Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa but rather outsourced through a third party vendor, however they should still follow the same service standards of the Marriott. We will definitely bring this to their attention and we thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are looking forward to your next visit with your family.

After a rather challenging drive from Los Angele's holiday traffic, we arrived at the hotel to be "greeted" by a valet carparker who insisted we hand over our car keys. There were not any other cars around. He could not be ruder or reasoned with. Not off to a relaxing beginning. This stressed my husband out as we had costly electronics, etc. in our car. We checked in and had a very pleasant looking room complete with a lovely view. We thought things were only improving. Unfortunately, not. We ventured out for several hours and enjoyed the town, scenery and walked the hotel property. We sat outside on the balcony and enjoyed a bottle of wine. Much later that evening, I had used the bathroom and noticed that the wallpaper was filthy. It was actually gross, as there were reminants of solid human waste. I was horrified. The next morning I went to the front desk to notify the staff of my shocking discovery. I was told it would be taken care of immeditely and the person behind the desk apologized. We had breakfast, then off to a lovely day ( I can only hope for). When we returned to our room, the complaint was never addressed. I was disgusted as Marriott prides its flagship properties with cleaniness, comfort and an attractive room. Not the case at Laguna Cliffs Resort. Someone dropped the ball!
We had to move to a clean room. A manager did address our complaint. I thank her for her efforts;however nasty car valets, dirty bathrooms and overall very poor service does not equal a decent vacation. Wake up Marriott, get it together! There are lots of choices out there.

Room Tip: Go to another property!

Though the location of the hotel and it's surroundings are extremely pleasant, I felt that the extra charges tacked on the bill were not justified. When one is paying quite a hefty price for a fairly average room (on the noisy poolside), then having to pay extra for valet parking, "resort" fee, and daily wi-fi is a bit much.

Thank you for your review. We thank you for your compliments regarding our beautiful ocean-view resort and the surrounding areas. We appreciate your feedback regarding our parking fees and will certainly take your comments under review. In recent parking surveys we’ve conducted with our fellow resorts located on the coastline, we have found our parking rates to be in line and are actually the most economical. In regards to the resort fee, this fee does include Wi-Fi in your guest room. There is not a separate charge. Our resort fee also includes many other amenities such as complimentary activity rentals and shoe shine service. We hope this gives you more clarity regarding the fees.

Very nice property with excellent accommodations . The staff was very attentive and professional. The only disadvantage that I found wad that your car had to be valet parked and every time you needed your vehicle the staff was waiting for a tip. Needless to say the parking was $32.00 per day. Other than that the hotel definitely met expectations .

Room Tip: Make sure you book a pool or ocean view room

Beautiful resort overlooking Dana Point Harbor. Excellent resort, fabulous views........ However, beach right across the street at Doheny State Park not the best, pretty, but very rocky, lots of seaweed and twigs..... had to go too far out for good waves! But views magnificent. Walking distance to Dana Point Wharf shops and restaurants..........

Room Tip: Choose a room on upper floor for best views. Love the balcony, too..........
