“Great Hotel by the Sea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Huge and beautiful hotel looking out over the Pacific Ocean and harbor area. Wonderful pool area and nice restaurants. Excellent beds and clean large bedrooms. Large grounds for walking dogs or playing with kids. Ten minute walk to the harbor and harbor restaurants. Good seafood at the wharf plus boat and bike rentals. The hotel has an excellent staff and and great service.

This recently renovated/updated Marriott is very nice. Rooms are Marriott clean and equipped. The beds comfortable. The hill top location and tennis, pool and other amenities set this apart from a typical hotel-as the name says this is a resort. Very nice Marriott property.

We visited Dana Point for the whale festival in March. Fabulous location, we were able to walk to a lot of places! Our room was clean and great. Would definitely recommend! We had a very short trip but we'd definitely love to take a longer trip soon, the hotel is just beautiful. Only compliant is bird poop on the chairs by the pool, but that can only be controlled to a certain point.

Thank you for your review. We hope you enjoyed the Festival of the Whales during your stay. The location of the resort is just perfect, walking distance from the harbor and marina, yet set high on the cliffs for a peaceful and serene setting. We appreciate your feedback and we will definitely look out for the bird’s messes. We hope that you do visit us again soon for a longer vacation.

I had stayed here once before but it was years ago. I remember it being nice, but clearly my memory is going as this is an outstanding hotel. The staff is nice, attentive, but not in-your-face obnoxious. They want to help and are intent on making your staff pleasant.

As a frequent Marriott guest, I got upgraded to room 217 which was a suite with two balconies, both of which had beautiful views. The bed was comfortable, the internet worked, the shower was nice, and it was quiet and tranquil.

I ate in the restaurant and submitted a separate review - it was very good.

The spa/workout facility was an A+. Valet parking was prompt.

My room rate was cheap - $170 but I failed to read the fine print and they get you for a resort fee. So, with that added in and the valet was also an upcharge, this cheap room got a bit more expensive. Not so bad as to not stay there, but just be aware.

Room Tip: Room 217 is one of their best.

We stayed at the hotel for 4 nights and really enjoyed the hotel. Check-in was very smooth. The person at the front desk also presented our children with a basket of toys from which they could choose which was a nice touch.

The rooms are were clean and comfortable. The mattresses had feather beds on top of them which were very comfortable as well. If they are too soft, you can always take them off.

The view is abosultely amazing. You are standing on a cliff overlooking the marina (which is in walking distance) and the ocean. Beyond the hotel grounds is a public park where groups come to do yoga (while staring at the ocean), walk dogs, etc..

While the weather was a little chilly while we were thre (62 degrees) the children were still able to swim (the pool is heated) and use the hot tub. Don't let the cool air from the ocean fool you, the sun is very strong and you can get burnt, so make sure you have your lotion.

Our package came with breakfast and parking. I recommend the package as breakfast will cost you $25 a person otherwise. Alternatively, you can get breakfast down by the marina and there is a Denny's around the corner. However, neither will compare to the Laguna Cliffs Marriott's buffet or the french toast from the menu, which I highly recommend.

All in all, a great stay and I look forward to returning.

Room Tip: We were in 2036 which overlooks one of the pools. It is a bit of a walk though.

Thank you for your review. We appreciate your compliments and we are delighted that you had a wonderful 4 night stay at the resort. We love hearing about our guests’ experiences and we are happy to hear that your children enjoyed the heated pools. We hope they were able to spend some time in the Splash zone as well. The French toast is one of my favorites at the Vue Restaurant as well and the buffet items are very delicious. We appreciate you sharing your experience with us and we are looking forward in your return to Southern California.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013

I was a guest of this resort for two nights in March 2012 for a conference. Every employee I met was courteous and attentive, from the parking valet attendant, the check in, the waiters, and the hotel maids. It appeared that this property is well managed with good employee morale.

The room was approximately 300 square feet with a king bed with a smaller partial ocean view. The hotel itself appeared it was built during the 1980.s architectural design and still retain some of the feel of the eighties, but it was well kept.

Banquet food was provided by the conference catered by the hotel, service and quality of food
was better than most other similar conferences that I have attended. All in all a relaxing place to
be for couples and families. I would return and recommend this property to anyone who might want to visit south Orange County. The hotel is approximately thirty miles south of Santa Ana airport, and when traveling during peak traffic hours, the drive may take one hour from the airport. Some colleagues took a shuttle from the airport, they reported the ride was $60 per person. I used a rental vehicle and the hotel charged $29 per day for valet parking, the only option.

Room Tip: Higher floors maybe less noisy.

I have a ton of mixed feelings about this resort. It has a beautiful location, with a ton of things to do if you go and search them out. The base price of the room is a value but the $32 per day parking and $15.00 (+$1.50 tax) resort fee add another almost $50.00 a day to your rate.
Very close to Dana Point Harbor which has shopping and dining but be aware it is 118 steps up and down. The service was very friendly and they seemed to be sponsoring internships for European college students which was great but not always as attentive as it could be. The pool was nice if just a bit cold and the little kids seemed to enjoy the splash zone despite some of it being out of order.
A pretty enjoyable trip to Orange county and hope to come back and maybe the little minor things can be worked out.
