“Homestyle Japanese in Cupertino”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

Azuma is a nice homestyle Japanese restaurant in Cupertino, just off Stevens Creek Blvd. Food is standard Japanese cuisine, like mom and grandma used to make. Seasoning is just right, and portions are generous. Restaurant is nice and clean, quiet, and cozy. There is a sushi bar as well. For some real Japanese comfort food, I'd recommend Azuma Japanese in Cupertino!

“New Owners have Changed Everything and Not for the Better”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2013

The original restaurant that has been operating since 1971 is no longer, as the new owners have changed the food significantly. It is so sad, since I grew up eating here. I went there tonight after flying in for the holidays and was totally disappointed.

The service was terrible. The renkon is no longer served with hot mustard. When I asked for it,they said they didn't have any and offerd Sriracha instead. Are you kidding me? They brought everyone's food but my mom's teriyaki chicken. After we asked about it, the waitress went up to the counter where the food comes out and asked about it. They handed her a plate that consisted of nearly raw chicken covered in sauce. Luckily, my dad stopped my mom before she took a bite, as he has great eyes and could see it was pink even in such dim lighting. We sent it back and the staff seemed very confused over it. They at first didn't offer to replace it, but after about 15 more minutes they came back with another plate. To their credit, they also took the charge off the bill and gave us some sushi.

Despite them eventually making up for their poor service, we will not go back because the recipes have changed. The tekkamaki is tiny now and the sauces for the dishes are totally different and very fake tasting. The original Azuma's futomaki which has been a staple in my family for over 40 years no longer exists. What they have now is very beat up looking and also quite small compared to the original. I have had worse, less authentic Japanese food, but I don't see this place lasting much longer.

“Fresh and Delicious”

Most restaurants in this area do no last long but Azuma has served wonderful food for many years and will hopefully continue doing so.

“Great food great service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

This place is great for a nice relaxed dinner. You are greeted when yo walk in by a pleasant smile, and are given a reasonable time to decide, never rushed. The meals have many courses, each brought separately: appetizer, salad, soup, main course. They space it out perfectly so you are never rushed from one to the other, yet never have to wait too long. Food quality is excellent. Salad crisp, meat very tasty, tempura fried so it's not too greasy. Even the pickiest eaters in my family love it.

“Great authentic Japanese cuisine, not "new gourmet"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2012

Very efficient service, excellent meal, reasonable price. If you want to eat a meal like you would get in Japan, this is the place to go to.
