“Not the best Courtyard I've been to...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2008

This is a very attractive hotel, fairly close to LAX, with clean rooms and a flat panel TV complete with Direct TV! However, there was a fee for parking, something I expect at regular Marriotts, but not at the Courtyard chain. The biggest turn off for me and the reason that I would not stay there again unless NOTHING else was available was the noisy air conditioning! A hotel that looks this nice in all other ways should not have a noisy air conditioning mounted below the window... I expect to see this type of A/C at your lower priced Motel 6 type motels... Not at a "newly remodeled" Courtyard.

Very comfortable hotel with friendly staff. Recently remodeled. Fresh coffee available in lobby. Buffet breakfast expensive but tasty. Convenient location. Outdoor pool available, but didn't use.

We stayed in 7 hotels in the past 2 weeks traveling from TX to CA. This was one of the nicer ones. Location is near the Santa Monica beaches and across the street from the Hillcrest Cemetary (Jewish cemetary) where Al Jolson is buried.

Front desk was very accommodating and quick. The room was very nice with a comfortable bed. My kids used an airbed and there was plenty of room for that in the room.

I used the fitness facility which my husband thought was one of the nicest ones that he had seen in the hotel's price range. The new treadmills had their own tvs and the room was quite large. I also had to do laundry and there are 2 washers and dryers which were very clean.

We enjoyed our stay but wish they would offer breakfast. It is a rip off and we went elsewhere for breakfast.

Pros--
Convenient to airport
Very comfortable bed
Extremely helpful and courteous front desk staff
Quiet room
Nice pool
Pleasant lobby
Two computers availabe in lobby----can check e-mail, print boarding pass, etc. That was helpful!
Room was cleaned well and clean supplies left, except for one night. I had to ask for more toilet tissue and clean towels
from the front desk that night.

Cons--
TV in room, though a very nice one, was very complicated to operate.
Food was very overpriced for what one received
Breakfast service was good---food was hot, etc., but I would suggest that the hotel offer at least a complimentary continental breakfast; some Marriotts even offer a full free buffet. If you are looking for something "light" for breakfast, it's not there unless you want to pay $13.95 for the buffet and just get what little you want. More choices are defintely needed for breakfast!
Lunch service was very poor . At 1PM I had to wait and wait to even get someone to take my order, and there was only one couple besides me in there at that time--hard to understand that.
Sandwich was OK--nothing special for almost $10.
This was advertised as a "new" Marriott, and it is not. That was obvious, and I learned soon after my arrival that it had been the LAX Plaza and had just completed renovations three months ago---a little deceiving, I think.

  • Liked — The very comoftable and quiet room

When I travel I always stay at a Marriot and this one is no longer my list. Day of arrival asked for lower floor (2, 3 or 4th) and quite. I had to take the 5th floor to get a quite room. Later that day an employee had to manually operate the elevator, thank goodness this just happen once in the week I stayed. First night discovered I had no hot water, maintenance immediately came and had it fixed in about 30 minutes.
Lobby décor is not to my taste, very busy and not the elegance I’m use to at a Marriott. My room décor was a lot nicer, it was comfortable and very quite, no airplane noise which was a nice surprise. The restaurant was open only certain hours, so if you arrive hungry it may be closed. The staff was very helpful and pleasant. Although my biggest complain was went I returned after being gone all day and found that the housekeeper had left my door ajar. Anyone could have entered my room - not good.
Although the staff was very helpful and alway there to answer any question, over all there were too many negatives and I will never stay at this Marriott again.

This courtyard, which seems to cater more towards business travelers, had quite the mix of guests. I saw business travelers and quite a few families with young children. It was a weekend and the start of summer break (for many Californians anyway).

My neutral rating is due to the following:
Positives: clean, attractive room upon arrival, nice flat screen tv w/lots of channel choices, above average bed w/great pillows, satisfactory temperature control, great shower, good rate when compared with other properties in the area.

Negatives: maid service provided clean towels but failed to remove soiled ones, maid service forgot to remove trash, front desk staff were not helpful or terribly courteous, thin walls allowed for hall noise to disrupt sleep, tiny bathroom.

A few other notable things: parking during our stay: $12.00/day. I noticed other guests use street parking to avoid the lot fee.

CVS Pharmacy is located right next door. It's a quick walk -- get bottled water, sodas, etc for less than the hotel "market" or the $2.00 machines on the guest room floors.

Will I stay here again: I will look long and hard at other possibilities, but if the rate is spectacular, would perhaps return.

The good:
The lobby was very nice and our room was well furnished, including a flat screen TV and a Herman Miller Aeron chair. Everything seemed almost brand new, especially the fitness center and pool area. LAX travelers will find the location of this hotel quite convenient.

The bad:
The beds weren't terribly comfortable. And the pool, while in very good condition, was much too small and shallow for swimming laps. The hot tab was also lukewarm.

The ugly:
This hotel has unbelievably thin walls, considering that the rest of the building appears to be quite new. I could hear the television from the next room quite clearly and loudly.
