The Marriott Suites Costa Mesa is a great example of a hotel that is exactly what it's supposed to be. The property looks exactly the way it does on the brochure, or rather, on the web site since paper brochures are becoming rare. Located in Southern California's Orange County, and literally adjacent to the South Coast Plaza, this hotel has the perfect location, appearance and amenities to serve its clientele. There are Marritt brands which span the range of hotel experience. From the uber high-end J.W. Marriotts and various boutique "Collection" hotels, all the way down to the motel-style locations which still serve a purpose somewhere; Marriott has something for everyone. This particular hotel offers a great experience for families, business travelers, couples looking for a weekend getaway, or anyone who'd like to stay close to the action without having to be sifled by a crowd. It's not super-lux, but it has comfortable luxuries we've come to take for granted. It gives Marriott a solid footing in this area which has plenty hotels - and gives you a lot for the money.
1. The Room
Rooms are all suites here, we had one with 2 beds. The room was more suitable for a couple with a child, or perhaps an extended family. One single bed, plus a double, plus a sofa bed offered everyone ample privacy and room to sleep comfortably without crowding the space with a roll away cot. Our party was 3 deep, so everyone got what they needed.
the rooms are carefully designed to offer ample seating in the living room, with a fridge and coffee maker. Some 5 star hotels don't offer these simple conveniences that make everyone happy.
A big flat screen TV was available with plenty good channels. The view outside was pleasant and the air conditioning was quiet and powerful.
The bedroom was alittle compact with the 2 beds - luckily they were different sizes, otherwise 2 doubles would have been really cramped. The small TV was included by necessity, but there was really no good position for it. The room is made private by french doors with multiple window panes. The privacy was there - but not overly intimate. Good thing everyone was on good behavior!
The bathroom was a good size, and the stone counter was a nice touch. The bowed shower curtain added modern flair and elegance and the furnishings were up to date.
Of course the one complaint I will always have is the lack of shower gel. There were slightly bigger-than-normal mini soaps available, but any hotel that uses the word "Suites" in its names should simply offer shower gel and ban mini soap. It's a horrible relic from the past that's got to go!
Still, I brought my own gel and the mini soap remained in tact as part of the bathroom's pleasant decor. Fine.
The amenities of the hotel included a beautifully landscaped pool area complete with large pool and jacuzzi. I'm not sure if drink service is offered, but there were plenty attendants keeping the place tidy, a nice touch - especially when groups of teens and families are checked in.
The food (breakfast) was quite wonderful, and included in the price of the room. Great buffet - keep up the good work there.
In short, the good price of this hotel made it especially appealing, with one exception. This hotel requires $21.00 for overnight parking. This is a bit of a rip off since there's a huge mall down the street and no shortage of parking spaces. It amounts to gouging, since the hotel is a part of a large office park with other restaurants and hotels. I know free parking is becoming rare in Southern California - but why not $10 a night, or $7, or even $12. $21 a night indicates the hotel is higher end than it really is.
Bottom line is that the Marriott Suites Costa Mesa is exactly the kind of hotel its name implies. the Marriot Brand is well represented here with a comfortable room, great attention to service and detail, and they leave you wanting to come back for more (minus the parking).
