“Great staff, reasonable location for shopping at South Coast Plaza.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

The Hilton Costa Mesa is a good solid 4 star property within walking distance of South Coast Plaza. (a free shuttle bus also departs each 2 hours). The easy walk to the plaza is around 10 mins.

I have stayed at this hotel on 15+ occasions and what I can say is as such:

Not all rooms are the same - there are a whole heap of rooms on the lower floors (2 and 3) that have tiny windows of less than 2 foot in height, positioned at almost ceiling height - and that is it! These rooms are dark, damp, sometimes smell musty and are a horror to stay in.

At the ends of each floor are rooms with floor to ceiling windows - lots of natural light, bright and roomy - but no balcony. There are also a small number of rooms overlooking the central atrium in this format with little / no natural light.

The vast majority of rooms on floors 4 and above have large balconies that overlook the area. They are roomy, breezy and full of natural light.... These are the rooms you want!

In the above 3 categories, some rooms have been renovated (with textured furnishings and decorations in deep tones of chocolate brown & burnt umber) while others have not. It should be noted that the renovation is largely a cosmetic one - apart from a new (less comfortable) sitting chair. the basic room amenities remain unchanged.

The pool area is sunny, well maintained and a good place to spend a lazy afternoon.

The real winner at the Hilton Orange is the staff. From the reception team to the concierge team, they are a real asset to the hotel. Even the girls who work in the lobby Starbucks are constantly smiling and happy to serve. It is the impeccable service that the whole team provides that will keep me coming back time and time again.

Room Tip: Stay away from the rooms on the lower floors with the tiny windows.... They feel like prison.

We stayed for 3 days with a very large group of water polo players that ranged in age from 8-18. The hotel lobby area is not huge but seemed to easily accommodate the large numbers. The hotel was very clean and the staff were very friendly. Some of the rooms overlook the atrium and I could imagine that they might get pretty noisy.

The breakfast buffet was good and our only complaint was the price of the drinks at the bar.

There are several fast food places within walking distance and a 7-11 across the street. The South Coast Plaza shopping mall and cinema complex is nearby.

The hotel is well situated near the 55 freeway, a couple minutes south of I-5, and near the airport. It was a quick 20 minute drive to Disneyland and the beaches.

Room Tip: Ask for an even numbered room in the 02-20 range and you'll be overlooking the pool. Avoid a roo...

Dear Si405:

Thank you for taking the time to critique the Hilton Orange County Costa Mesa. We greatly enjoyed having all our guests last weekend-water polo players, business guests, many social groups and wedding parties and especially you. The Hilton offer much to so many and its our goal to be even more!

As you mentioned, the Hilton Orange County Costa Mesa offers travelers convenience to a wide range of entertainment venues, shopping, beaches, restaurant options and even the nearby John Wayne/Orange County Airport.

Our hotel has recently completed an exciting, as well as extensive update including within our extra large guest rooms (with balconies that offer a great view of Southern California sunrises and sunsets), adding even more beautiful and upscale appointments from floor to ceiling than they had before! The Bristol Palms restaurant offers a large selection of fresh and delicious breakfast options including Eggs Benedict and also a buffet that leaves our guests wanting for nothing-French pastries, Scones, hot and cold cereals, French Toast, Bagels, Smoked Salmon, Bacon, Sausage, Eggs, Potatoes, juices, and on and on. And, unique to many hotels, we offer 24 hour room service and a Brick Pizza Oven bar right in the Lobby!

Once again, thank you for your comments and please come back again to the Hilton Orange County Costa Mesa.

Sincerely,

Rob Gauthier

One night stay in early February 2013. Hotel was clean and staff was helpful and efficient. The fitness center had lots of equipment and allof it was in working order. Also, ate in the restaurant for breakfast - expensive but lots of choices

Room Tip: had to pay for parking!

Dear Dave S20002001:

Thank you for taking the time to critique the Hilton Orange County Costa Mesa. I apologize that you felt the parking fee was in question. Unfortunately, like so many hotels across the country located in high demand locations, parking is at a premium, though we have strived to minimize the charge to our guests as compared to our competition.

Spent 4 days recently at this hotel and truly enjoyed it. The staff is very attentive from check-in to check-out. Were especially helpful in directing me to nearby sites, shopping, and entertainment. I found the hotel to be very competitive in pricing but actually better quality than the nearby Marriott I've stayed in previously and nicer in many ways than the Westin I've also stayed in. I had the great breakfast buffet several mornings as well as the Eggs Benedict on the menu. Two nights I ordered room service which was really fast and delicious. They have a nice bar too. My room was beautifully appointed, wonderfully comfortable beds, and huge compared to so many hotels these days with a balcony. I really loved the upscale Cuisiart Coffee Maker and mini-frig. I could see the pool from my room and it looked inviting. i will definitely go back to the Hilton!

Am a diamond member so get to compare lots of Hilton family properties.

Quick Review.

Get picked up at the airport in a minivan that comes to SNA twice an hour. Nice driver though.

Lobby impressive but rooms seem very old and worn. Seems possibly construction on 7th floor (exec level) so perhaps that was reason I was not offered an upgrade. No notification of construction though

Executive lounge is awful. Is very small and you can't even see the one TV from most of the seats. Only a continental breakfast. But nice server

Next time will try the Hilton closer to the airport. Hilton Irvine I think

Dear AndyF:

Thank you for taking the time to critique the Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa. On behalf of myself and the staff, please accept my apologies for your disappointment in your recent stay. We are committed to being the the first choice to travelers coming into the Costa Mesa/Newport/Santa Ana/Irvine area, and are truly disappointed when we fail to meet our guests expectations.

The Hilton Orange County/Costa Mesa offers travelers convenience to a wide range of reasons including the nearby John Wayne/Orange County Airport, near but not at the airport which many travelers prefer, especially with our proximity to so many business and entertainment sites. We offer extensive transportation options to and from not only the airport, but nearby shopping at South Coast Plaza, various entertainment venues, as well as area business centers.

My wife and I stayed here at the end of January for a week. It was business related but we extended it for a small vacation. We made reservations well in advance and when we arrived around 8pm we were told they were sold out of the rooms that were reserved for my group. The only room they had was a handicap room. I was told that the room still had a king size bed and the only difference was that the shower had metal bars in it. Well, when we got into our room we found out the real deal. The shower is wide open, no bath tub nada. It was like an open military shower. My wife was NOT happy. I went downstairs to see if we could get a different room and was told to come back the next day around late morning and they may have a room. The room also had a huge door to the bathroom as to let someone with a wheel chair to get into it. Great for someone who is handicapped but not for someone who doesn't need a wheel chair. The next day they did change our room as I put up a mild show about my discomfort with the whole reservation issue. Our next room was much better with a king size bed and a lot of room with a recliner chair and tables. The TV was a flat screen and looked nice but our remote didn't work unless you were Right in front of the TV. The rooms which we had our briefings in were for the most part fine. Some were very small and others were huge. The map of the rooms were a little confusing as we caught ourselves walking around like tourists. The free Breakfast and lunch buffets were good but I was a little disappointed with the breakfast because they put cheese in the eggs. My preference I guess. I just thought they should keep it more simple. They had a fitness center and a pool but we never had a chance to see it so I can't review those. The hotel has a bar and restaurant which we did have a few drinks at and had breakfast. It is pricey and the food was ok. You were better off going to IHOP down the street. We did buy the internet access for one day and got a group rate of 10.00 for 24 hours. The connection was very good. There is a coffee both down in the lobby that served starbucks coffee and treats. These were pricey as well. There is also a small store that has souvenirs and other small items such as cold medicine etc. I bought some "airborne" tablets that cost me 15 dollars! Like I said this place is pricey. Around the outside of the hotel is a few area's with shopping and places to eat. There is a "Wahoos" which has great fish taco's with in walking distance. Also there is a place called the "camp" near by that has several places to eat and art and craft stores. We thought it was neat and reminded us of Northampton MA. The only other thing to do is to go to the Gigantic Mall near by that has every store you can think of in it. Also has great places to eat. The hotel offers free rides to and from the mall with scheduled times. The hotel also provides rides to and from the Santa Ana Airport(John Wayne). Overall our stay at the Hilton was good and I would recommend this hotel for anyone in the area. Just don't expect a 5 star place. It was fine for us with just a few bumps in our stay. Also the hotel does have a parking garage that will cost you 21.00 dollars per day to overnight park unless you get a group rate. The hotel is located nice as it is less that an hour to L.A and several beaches including Laguna beach was around 30 minutes away.

Room Tip: Ask if your room is near the laundry facility because it can loud at all different times of the day...

Dear Mort 439:

Thank you for taking the time to provide a very inclusive report on your stay. Each comment was appreciated and I will be taking further action on several items you mentioned, (and have already made some changes).

Allow to me to address the issue of your guest room request not satisfied at check-in. Firstly, I apologize for the necessity of your party having to move the next day to a guest room you preferred. I understand you were inconvenienced and am sorry. This is a rarity as our hotel works very hard to not only meet, but exceed the needs of our guests' requests before, during, and even after their stay. Unfortunately, demands can sometimes fluctuate creating a temporary need to utilize "last sale" guest rooms such as ADA guest rooms. They are identical to standard guest room except for the items you mentioned, i.e. wider doorways, shower accessibility. Nevertheless, when we fail to meet the expectation of our guests we are disappointed.

We believe our guests deserve the highest level of service and amenities we are able to offer and with that goal, we continue to enhance our hotel-from guest rooms amenities, to food and beverage options, as well as services that truly address the wants and needs of our guests. Procedures and policies are also constantly reviewed for improvement. Thank you for assisting us in your constructive critique and for noting the positives including location, the many services we extend, etc.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to give us feedback and please come back soon to see the many enhancements currently being completely for the enjoyment of our guests!

Sincerely,

Rob Gauthier

A friend rented out the starwood suite on the top floor for the night before and the night of her wedding. The suite was stunning and spacious, and offered lots of storage for the groomsmen, the bridesmaid, and the bride and groom. The photographers, make-up & hair crew, and family members also visited before the ceremony to get everyone ready, and it did not feel stuffy at all.
We ordered room service to toast the bride, but room service charged us $8/ glass of orange juice. Um. Hell no! Luckily, the manager understood and offered a more cost-effective plan, but it still dampened the already highly charged mood of the bridal party. Just a quick tip on parking: Valet charges about $8 more per night than self park, but sometimes the $8 is worth it if you're coming back to the hotel late. A friend did this only to find there was almost no parking available.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top two floors are mostly suites and spacious!
