“Weekend Trip with Friends and Family”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

The Loews property is beautiful, however, please know that you are 2 miles outside of Coronado. It was perfectly ok with us as we had a rental car and also took advantage of the shuttle bus to town in the evenings.

The property itself has recently been updated - very comfy bedding, beautiful and spacious bathrooms, and good sized rooms. Only negative I can say is that I would like a shower head with more pressure. We traveled with our baby and were also happy with the crib and baby bedding that was provided.

The pool area is great for families and groups. We played ping pong and enjoyed drinks at the pool bar. The weather was just warm enough for the pool (and they keep it at a really nice temp year round). The pool area has some play toys and they also gave us a "floating" device for the baby who also loved the pool.

As most reviews have said, the drink prices are high, but that can be expected at a full service hotel. I would recommend this hotel and the Coronado area, but definitely rent a car!

My wife and I had the opportunity to stay at the Loews Coronado resort as it was the official hotel of the Silver Strand half marathon.

The location is a bit out of town, which could be an advantage if you are looking to get away from the crowds at Coronado, especially during peak season.

We stayed in a pool view room, which was well appointed. The bedding was comfortable, the bathroom was very spacious, with both a tub and shower. As a marathon participant I suppose these are the important characteristics. Since I was up early in the morning I availed myself of the in room Keurig coffee machine and included k-cups.

The on site restaurant was very good; I ended up with some fantastic penne arrabiata, which was as spicy as it should be, that is to say, fairly spicy.

Additionally there is a twenty-four hour on site starbucks and cafe, which is a welcome respite for a weary traveler.

There are a few negatives. As always, it seems like the more upmarket the hotel the more likely they are to charge for individual items. Parking is twenty-five dollars for self parking and thirty for valet. In all honesty self parking might be better as you have the ability to park right under the to rooms. Internet is $12.95 for two devices or $16.95 for four devices, per day. It is frustrating to pay nearly two hundred dollars a night for a room, only to have to pay an additional forty dollars per day for the ability to park our car and surf the internet.

Overall it was a good experience, a very nice room, a good night of sleep and a fun race in the morning.

Its a great place for a couple to getaway and spend some romantic time with each other. Its a nice upscale, clean resort, the service upfront is okay but not fantastic. Its a bit pricey but its worth it, the spa near the pool needs to be a bit updated. If you get a balcony room youll gave a great view of the ocean and a great view of the naval ships. Its a resort that is secluded to itself and near some wonderful beaches. Also a great place to have a wedding too! Clean rooms, and comfortable beds too.

Room Tip: Just letting you know that if you get a balcony youll see some naval ships and you can hear the acti...

This is one of the most beautiful properties we've stayed in in California. The one we compared it with is the Oceana in Half Moon Bay, which was a comparable price. However, the room at Loews was smaller and there were a lot more extra things to pay for. At Loews you pay for parking, self-parking was a bit cheaper and actually more convenient, you can park right under your room. We only ate breakfast in their restaurant. The crab bendict was heavenly, but with tip we spent $60 for two people! They have a small convenience store where you can get food a bit more reasonably, but it is pretty much self-serve and the selection is limited. We stayed here because we got a credit toward the bill from buying a Priceline cruise. Would we stay at Loews again? Only at half-price, and even then maybe we would try the famed Del Coronado Hotel instead.

One disappointing thing, we were on the top floor because we hate to be awakened by people moving in the rooms above us--an all too frequent event in the wee hours of the morning. To our surprise we were awakened well after midnight by footsteps above us, loud footsteps. Since only the roof was above us, that meant someone was walking on the roof, a bit frightening. We called the desk and they sent someone to check. In fact, we heard the person checking. They never told us what it was nor did they offer any kind of recompense, even a small credit toward breakfast would have been nice.

Room Tip: Ask for the top floor and a room with a view.

The location and views are spectacular.I can say that the food and staff was above average. My issues are with the room itself.Everything in the room looks to be about ten years old and worn. The TV couldn't even supply an HD signal. After using glasses they were never replaced. The mini-bar was unlocked upon arrival and was never restocked.
The location is the only reason I would go back.

OK I'll make this simple:

+
Beautiful location, cool view of downtown
Really nicely appointed, clean & quiet room
Comfy bed
Hotels up keep is top notch
Nice pools and amenities
Our party had 3 2-year olds, and it was great for them
Great,super helpful staff
WAY nicer place than we usually stay so we were in hog heaven!

Negatives:
A bit out of the way, which is good or bad depending on what you're looking for. If you don't want to drive you will rely on their restaurants which are a bit $
We did feel a bit nickeled and dimed - you have to PAY 12.95 for internet service? Come on, we got free internet the last time we stayed at the Super 8 motel!
Have to pay 25$ for self parking, which isn't a surprise at a nice hotel but since it's quite isolated it was a pain because my friends who live in SD would have to pay to visit us, so we just me them in town but that was kind of a bummer.

Overall it was a good stay though. We chose this hotel because I ran the Silver Strand Half Marathon, and it was pretty smoothly coordinated as the official venue hotel. We'd love to stay longer in the summer, it was a great kid's hotel.

With respect to "value," that concept doesn't get along that well with San Diego. If you aren't used to it, it will hurt. By SD value standards, though, it is pretty decent.

The view is spectacular, if you can get one (see photo). The rooms are comfortable and well-appointed, with good-sized balconies. The pool area is first-rate, with generous hours. Can't comment on the food.

Downsides? Hotwire/Priceline-style deals don't always let you upgrade, so you might be stuck with a view of your neighbor. Self-parking is a ludicrous $25 per day. You are five miles from anywhere; you will have to drive across the road to get to the ocean and pay $10 for parking. They even charge for wi-fi. (The Hotel Del is right in town, which means nightlife.)

If you bid, you will get this hotel nine times out of ten.

Since you are going to have to drive to the beach anyway, I recommend Imperial Beach. The price is right, and there are a few bistros to choose from.

Room Tip: Try to get an upgrade from the garden-view rooms
