“Our ninth visit to the Loews”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013

Obviously, we love this place since we keep coming back every summer. But I do agree with another poster who said the hotel seems to be in the middle of an identity crisis right now. When we started staying there almost a decade ago, there were so many kid/family friendly organized activities like mad science and pizza making workshops for the kids, basketball pick up games on the courts and family bingo. All are gone now. In their place, they are adding more and more adult organized activities like wine tasting and such. The lobby of the hotel went from a breezy beach feel, to a sleek contemporary look, more suitable to conference goers than families. But the location keeps us coming back. We like the secluded feel at the end of the island.

The glitches in service we encountered last year are definitely gone. We had the best service this year that we have ever had. Two of the pool wait staff really stood out to us, Manny and Allan. A big shout-out to those two guys for delivering 5-star service every day we were there. The beach workers also did a great job, the shuttle was readily available and they seem to have loaded up on more beach amenities like, chairs, boogie boards, etc.

We tried to book the resident "tennis pro" but for a lesson, but our call was never returned. Most of the advertised sports activities that are listed in the brochure, are not really what they claim to be. For example, "water basketball" games is just a hoop by the pool. There is nothing organized by an activities director like at other Loews hotels. Pretty lame. I truly hope they bring back some of the more family-oriented activities, especially BINGO. We were looking forward to playing this year, it's so hokey but fun!

All-in-all we will be back. For us it's all about the location.

A below average experience for a 4 star hotel. Staff are gracious, lovely and clearly wish they had more to offer. Seems to be a property in search of an identity. Is it sophisticated and lovely or a pulse pounding dj fueled party atmosphere? The answer, in the end, is neither. And with MSG flavored tortilla chips and flour infused tater tots instead of simple French fries, and menus rife w sandwiches and paninis and pizzas- well all I can say is good luck to my gluten free brethren. (Minus the pool side tacos which are excellent) Room service will be rough on you. Tho to be fair Mistral had an array of excellent choices. And market cafe had two! Count them, two great gluten free desserts. There are high points-- some great food and mostly fabulous staff- but at a corporate level this property seems to have no idea who it's trying to be... And consumer-focused and intuitive isn't even one of the options.

Had a lovely stay. Good room, good facilities and friendly staff. Extra charges were over the top e.g. $25 per day to self park and $12.95 for Internet in the room PER DEVICE PER DAY! Gym was extra and water was $8 per bottle in the room. In Loews Hollywood, same bottle of water was $6.50! I expect all this stuff to be included in the room price. The beach set up was nice- a trolley ride there, towels, chairs, surf boards all provided and FREE! Had a great massage but the most expensive one I've ever had (80 minutes cost $230 plus 20% service so a whopping $276!). We would consider a return visit though!

Room Tip: They all look good!

We had a wonderful stay here! The staff was amazingly professional and friendly! Julie the bartender out at the pool was great! Made us feel right at home! I will definitely stay here again and again when we vacation! Already planning next years trip to stay at this resort! We can't wait!

Nice enough hotel - certainly not 5 star but a decent 4 star property. All pretty standard except for outrageous parking fees - I could understand if the property was in the middle of San Diego where space is at a premium but Loews is in the middle of nowhere!!

In the trade this is known as 'drip-pricing' - gouging guests with additional charges not made clear at booking or at check-in.

I won't be staying a Loews again unless this charge is dropped (or at least made absolutely clear when booking)

The main building which houses the lobby, Mistral, Market, etc. is very nice. The service throughout the hotel is very nice. However the buildings with the rooms are tired and yelling for an upgrade (which I believe is forthcoming). The pool area is overcrowded with chairs. I do have to say that the service throughout the hotel was very good.

The other issue is that this hotel is so far down (5 miles) from downtown Coronado that it is no fun if you just wanted to step out of your hotel and walk. That's why, next time I will stay at the Del.

My husband and I were booked into this hotel as the last stop of our three week road tour of the US. This was the hotel we were most looking forward to staying in. On the website it looks incredible. The reality is that it is absolutely nothing like this.

When we turned up the valet parking was absolutely chaotic. One valet went off with our keys despite the fact that we said we would be self parking. What an absolute rip off the parking was, whether you decided to self park or use valet parking. We checked in late afternoon and unbelievably there was only one person working at the check in desk. We had to wait for ages.

We were not disappointed with our room, although the view was not great over the swimming pool and could potentially have been extremely noisy. The room was very large, clean and the bed comfortable. The bathroom also was a very good size. No gripe at all with any of this.

BUT this hotel is SO penny pinching. You get charged for absolutely everything. More in-room coffee - no problem - $1.50 per shot (I've never paid for extra in-room coffee, anywhere), self-parking - $25 per night, wifi - $12.95 per night. There was no mini-fridge in the room (can't understand why these larger hotels don't provide them, when the cheapest of motels do). The only fridge there was, was the in-room mini bar which was locked for the duration of our visit. The hotel obviously distrust their guests so much that you have to put in a special call to housekeeping to get it unlocked.

The thing we were really looking forward to was eating and drinking in the hotel as on the website the bar and restaurant looked absolutely fabulous. How disappointing. For a start, one restaurant looked little better than a downmarket café and one restaurant was closed. Why on earth does a hotel this size not have more eating/drinking places. There is absolutely nowhere to go. What sort of hotel closes its restaurant for three days a week in July? Because this hotel is absolutely in the middle of nowhere, there is no choice for eating unless you take your car out. On our first night we enjoyed a drink and some food in the bar, which basically you eat on your lap because there are no proper tables, but the view kind of makes up for that. The service is absolutely appalling. There are definitely not enough waiting staff to go around. We waited over an hour for our food, and fair enough we got a free round of drinks in compensation. The food was OK when it turned up, but the selection to choose from was really poor. Again, I reiterate why does a hotel this size not have more facilities? We planned to go into the bar on our second night but, wait, oh no, we couldn't because it was closed for some kind of conference and wouldn't open until later in the evening. We were faced with either waiting or taking the car out. We decided to wait. When we were eventually able to get onto the bar terrace, there was nowhere to sit. They had taken away all the tables and chairs that were there the previous evening to make room for the conference facilities and they hadn't bothered to put anything back. We eventually managed to find somewhere to sit and were absolutely ignored by the waiting staff. We decided to go inside instead to make ourselves more visible. How long does it take to pour a glass of wine? We waited 15 minutes for ours and I could see it sitting on the bar all that time, getting warmer by the minute.

It's all very well catering for conferences but when its at the expense of travellers who are paying a lot for a holiday, then I think it's very poor indeed.

As mentioned before, this hotel is literally in the middle of nowhere. The advertised beach is very difficult to get to and you can't see it from the road due to the RV park. There are no bars or restaurants nearby. Most of the beach is given over to US Navy activity, so you can't access it anywhere.

I expected so much from this hotel before our trip and everyone at home was so envious that we were staying here. If there was ever a case of misrepresentation on a website, this is it. I definitely wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone. If we come again we have decided we would stay at the very impressive looking Hotel del Coronado. This looks a wonderful place that is right on the beach and in the centre of where all the bars and restaurants are.
