This hotel is difficult to rate because of the variations in the rooms. The mansion itself is lovely and well restored. If it was a stand alone it would warrant inclusion in any list of romantic and cosy inns across American. But the mansion is connected to three or four other blocks of two story building which, if judged alone, would be more fitting of a Best Western motel chain. The association with the mansion elevates the tolerability of the out buildings. All guests get full run of the lower floor of the mansion with its warm lobby, two sitting rooms, sunny front deck, and the pool. If you tend to spend a lot of time in your room and you want to continue the charm and appeal, you best reserve a room in the mansion, because once you leave breakfast and go back to your room in one of the out buildings, you soon lose that cosy inn feel. The decor in the “contemporary” rooms (as they are called) is nothing more or less than you will find in other motel or hotel. There is apparently some variety in size and shape of all rooms, so discuss what you want when you call for reservations and you are less likely to be disappointed. I would avoid the rooms extending west toward Orange Street which has heavy traffic.
Definitely call for reservations. I got a better deal that way than through the website and if you are lucky enough to speak to Claudia you will feel warmly welcomed before you even arrive. The Inn prides itself on its customer service. This usually does not mean too much to me, but when you stay at an Inn you get a little closer to the staff and here they definitely go the extra mile for you. Only once did I get a little attitude from the desk clerk when we checked out at 10:30 a.m. even though there is a prominent sign stating that check out was at 11:00 am.
As for the room, my wife and I had a “Deluxe Room with 1 queen bed” and it is pretty much like the picture on the website. I found the room small. But my wife (who is my yardstick) said it was nice and that she would stay here again. We had a view south toward the bay, which is shown in one of my pictures. I also included pictures of the outsides of the out buildings to give a feel for what the grounds look like. By the way, if you crave the experience shown in the picture on the Inn’s website of the couple holding hands on the balcony overlooking the bay, you can only get it by reserving the penthouse. However, during breakfast you can sit at the same table shown in the following picture on the website if you are early enough to snag it before someone else does.
I feel a little bad giving only three stars, it is more like 3 ½. If I was just judging the mansion I would go four and a half stars. If just the out buildings, maybe 2 ½. stars. But stay here anyway. Your other choices on Coronado Island are the Del and the Marriott and then just a smattering of motels. But if you like Inns, this is the place. Staying on Coronado Island is treat enough in itself. It is a retreat from the hustle and bustle downtown or the Sea-World-kid infested lodgings in and around Mission Bay. You will no doubt be out and about most of the day and night anyway since there is so much to do in San Diego. Coming back to this quiet little nook after dark really gives you a good feeling.
