“Relaxing and wonderful place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

We stayed four nights in the North Island suite. The room was very clean, quiet and spacious. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast each morning and the wine/cheese reception in the evening. The owners have created a nice balance between the feel of a B&B and a lodge (we liked having the choice to eat at individual tables versus communal tables).

The location is fantastic. Close to shopping, restaurants and a couple of blocks from the Del Coronado Hotel and its fantastic beach.

We would definitely return!

Room Tip: I doubt there is a bad room, but we really enjoyed the North Island suite. It is upstairs toward th...

The 1906 Lodge is the best. Great attention to detail. Luxury accommodations at a reasonable price. Staff is top notch. Make sure to stay there when Susan is there - what a great hostess! Coronado is known for luxury, it's top rated beach, and "island" atmosphere, but this little gem, tucked away just a few blocks from the beach, really defines the finest Coronado has to offer.

Room Tip: I think any room would be great at this location.

Our top rated beach is only 2 blocks from the 1906 Lodge. Grab a couple of our beach chairs, beach towels and a big umbrella and enjoy the sunshine. After reading, napping and playing on the sand, enjoy Happy Hour in our parlor before going to dinner at one of Coronado's many and varied restaurants. As I like to say, you can stay busy all day long doing nothing while vacationing on Coronado Island! And we hope you hurry back!

My husband and I spent a wonderful two nights at the Isabella room. For the price though, I had higher expectations. I think we paid around USD 260 (incl tax).

Pros:
- Great location in Coronado (!!)
- Very clean and new room with attention to detail. The bathroom in the Isabella room is really cute (and largely the reason why we chose this one)
- Good service
- They have water bottles and coffee in the hallway for free, which was a nice touch

Cons:
- Breakfast was so so. Very standard breakfast, but overall rather sweet and we would have loved to have some savoury stuff. Coffee was very bad. The fruits were ok.
- The mattress: It had some plastic wrapped around it (as protection?), which meant that every single time we moved/turned around, it made a horrible squeaky sound. It was seriously annoying. I told the staff the following morning, but they did not seem too concerned about it. Kind of this "thanks for letting us know" thing, but I doubt any action was taken after...

I am kind of divided on this one: on the one hand, we had a wonderful stay, the place was very clean and nicely done, and overall we probably would not mind to come back, on the other we felt a bit misplaced and the mattress issue did not let us rest very well at night. It seemed more like a place for elderly couples (and mind you, we are in our 30s). They do have afternoon wine & cheese. Everyone was very welcoming, but I could not help feeling that it had a bit of a stiff/artificial atmosphere.

Maybe we have to give it a second try on our next Westcoast Trip :-)

Thank you for this review. We have checked the bed frame and mattress for the "squeaky" sound you heard each time you turned. We take great pride in the comfort of our rooms, the bedding and all amenities. All of our mattresses are new and each bed is made using 100% cotton mattress covers, sheets and comforters. Our housekeeping department is responsible for keeping the Lodge spotless! I will pass along your kind comments about the cleanliness of the Isabella Room and the attention to detail. We do hope you choose to return to the west coast and the 1906 Lodge.

This is a really lovely location and a very lovely lodge indeed. Susan is very welcoming and makes yummy entrees - we had pancakes one day and a croissant come omelette entree the next.

The Isabella room is very pretty with a beautiful bathroom which is even nicer than the pics. They do a turn down service too with little chocolates. Very very comfy bed too!

The location is spot on, just round the corner from the beach via a parade of cute shops/restaurants.

We were out for the nibbles/wine but saw others finishing off when we got back.

Our new breakfast entree which we have been refining over the past month made it's debut with all the right ingredients but one, a suitable name. Your description of this dish, The Croissant Omelet, is perfect. Thank you! Please come again soon to enjoy Coronado's parade of shops and restaurants, the beach and our comfy beds.

The 1906 Lodge is a terrific competitively priced B&B on the island. Great couples getaway.
The Staff: Professional yet very personable with great attention to detail.
The Property: Well maintained lush landscape with plenty of outdoor patio seating.
The Service: Perfect!
Our Room: Very clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated. (Kate's Garden)
Parking: Private underground complimentary parking. Fantastic!
The Location: Less than 1 block from The Del and all the main street amenities.
My wife and I look forward to returning next year!

Kate's Garden, in the Historic Lodge, is named in honor of Kate Sessions, the mother of San Diego gardening. Each of our rooms has been designed with a nod to Coronado's interesting past. "Kate's", has so much charm with its wicker furniture and the big bay widow seat overlooking our garden and reflecting pool.
We love to hear our guest's wonderful comments. We thank you for sharing your thoughts and we look forward to your return to the 1906 Lodge!

My husband and I enjoy traveling and trying new B&Bs. We have stayed in Coronado year after year, typically at The Del or Glorietta Bay Inn. This year was our first stay at 1906 Lodge. We stayed in the Polo Field room. Initially upon entering our room, it had a musty smell but with Coronado's great weather, an open window solved that problem! We found the room to be very comfortable (nice couch, lounge chair and king size bed). Extra fabulous shower too. Windows provided great views from nearly all angles. Location was the best asset. Did have trouble initially operating the TV, air conditioner and our room keys (either one worked and the other didn't or vice versa). The staff was accommodating with printing our airlines boarding passes and making taxi reservations, which we appreciated. My chief complaint...the coffee. I love my coffee and this was terrible (sorry). Remedied that by purchasing my own. Not a fan of the hot breakfast entrees either but hey, can't please everyone! We look forward to a second visit next year.

We too look forward to your second visit next year!
The Polo Field Suite is one of my favorite rooms for the same reasons you mentioned, windows all around, fresh air and the additional rain showerhead in the ceiling of the spacious shower. When first entering the Polo Suite you may detect a certain scent, then you sink into that big comfortable lounge chair, and realize...oh, it’s the leather!
We brew Starbucks coffee, available in our dining room throughout the day. A fresh breakfast buffet is prepared each morning along with our hot entrée of the day. We hope next year you find one of our entrées hits the spot. We are happy to provide breakfast to guests with special dietary needs, just make sure to let us know ahead of time.

Vastly over-rated. I agree that the lodge has been well restored but for me the positives ended there. 1st impressions count and our first contact was an email before arrival telling us to not arrive before 4pm and very detailed instructions on what to do on arrival including not to unload our luggage before checking in - the tone was such that you wouldn't dare! The "trolley car" room has 1/2 a rail of hanging space, 3 small shelves and one larger shelf for clothes and that's it - for 2 people staying 5 nights this is not enough space. The bedside tables had a shelf - we even got to see the shelf but couldn't use it as it was glassed in like some museum piece. 2 "lounge chairs" could not be arranged to watch TV and the fabric was such that u would slide off anyway. The balcony could only be accessed after raising a heavy wooden slatted blind which made it very awkward. The bathroom was nice but don't be expecting much power from the shower and the 1906 toiletries are cheap, nasty and small so take your own. It is advertised with wifi in room but this was very poor and slow so u may end up in Starbucks. Breakfast - I would recommend going out. We love Coronado but would not recommend this place. What I do recommend is that the owners visit The Spanish Garden Inn in Santa Barbara to get some tips.

While making reservations we do our best to answer our guest’s questions. We know it is a lot to remember. Our welcome letter, sent 24 hours before arrival, contains information that we hope will make finding us and checking in as streamlined as possible so that each guest can get settled and begin their vacation as soon as possible. I am sorry your experience was disappointing. If we had known, we may have been able to move you to another room and improve your WiFi service. We always do our best to make sure each guest is comfortable. Again, I am sorry you were not.
