“Historical Hotel With Great Views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

Certainly a nice hotel. I was there for a conference and the meetings were held in the main ballroom with a gorgeous view of the beach. The thing that struck as odd was that there were almost no trash cans anywhere (like garbage cans aren't classy enough). I just imagine there's a large staff of people walking around picking up flotsam and jetsam.

Thank you for your kind support and we are pleased that you enjoyed your business trip to this iconic resort. We do have trash cans throughout the property! They are encased in white housing structures with red roofs so they blend into the resort environment. We hope your travels bring you back our way again.

We live in La Mesa, CA, which is a city near San Diego. It is about a 30 minute drive to the Hotel Del Coronado, and we had never been there. We went there for the first time at Christmas as a stay home vacation for the holidays. The decorations were spectacular! We got a room that did not meet our needs, and they found us a different room. They have so much to see and do there, and the beach alone is worth the trip. We now go there at least every other year for a treat. It is expensive, and yet when we tried other facilities in our are were disappointed. We have stayed in most of the different areas of the hotel, and each brings a unique experience. We love the hustle/bustle of the place and seeing people from all over the globe who come here. The staff is always accommodating and willing to help. We have enjoyed several upgrades for better views, and they usually seem to be available when you check in as long as you have a reservation. The shops are all part of the experience, and they have several restaurants for great dining. The hotel is also within walking distance to other dining areas and shops.

Room Tip: Main hotel or the towers for a better view.

We have stayed at the Del many times over the years. Sometimes for a business conference, but mostly for short vacations at the beach. In my opinion, it is the best place to stay on Coronado. It has always been a nice, enjoyable experience, but a few tips should be noted. This is an expensive, busy resort/conference hotel, so getting value is important. Book well in advance. Always try for a room/suite upgrade. But, avoid the packages that include meals, breakfasts, etc. Again, value is an issue, but it is more likely that you will want to enjoy the many restaurants all within walking distance. Forget the 'ocean view' rooms. Very few are worth the extra cost. You will spend more time actually sitting or walking along the ocean. A room in the classic old (main) building is a must. A ride up to your room in their vintage elevator is fun.

Room Tip: Junior suites on the upper floors in the classic main building are the best values. The extra space...

Thank you for your great comments and advice. We are pleased that you have enjoyed your many visits over the years. The elevator in the main lobby is the original Otis #61 and enhances the nostalgia of this legendary resort. We look forward to your return.

Concluded our drive down the Cali coast at Hotel Del. All in all I was a bit disappointed. There were several conferences here during our stay and several areas of the beach and outside restaurants we closed for special events. They had set up for one activity or another outside of our room (which was a beach view) every day and night. On our last day we couldn't even get beach chairs as they were being used for a "special event". Thank goodness the little gal working the main pool went on a chair hunt for us. Lauren was a life saver. This is a lovely hotel, on a lovely beach with beautiful surroundings. The price is crazy high though and we definitely have had better for less. If you're going for history and the beautiful exterior then you won't be disappointed. If your looking for a luxury room with pampering service then I would say this isn't for you. I definitely don't feel pampered. Also, a note....if you get a room on the 1st floor with a beach view you must sleep with the door closed and your blinds are either opened (letting everyone who walks by see in) or closed. No sound of waves crashing for you because there is no screen and no windows that open to the beach. And it's not private at all. I'm sorry. Just not the way I would have liked to end my vacation.

Thank you for your feedback and we are equally saddened by your disappointment. We apologize for the inconveniences you encountered and will pass along your kind words to Lauren. For a more private and luxurious experience, we would recommend staying in the cottages and villas at Beach Village. We appreciate your valuable input.

Even if you don't stay at the Del...its certainly worth visiting and a walk thru the lobby. The oldest hotel in the U.S. that is still completely made of wood and kept to a constant update. The traveler on a budget may not be able to stay here so its worth just a quick visit or a wonderful walk on the pristine beach. The golden gilded elevator is a thrill...complete with a gloved elevator steward still helping the clients. As always San Diego has wonderful weather year round....

Thank you for the nice endorsement. The Del is one of the last remaining Victorian seaside resorts and we’re pleased that you appreciate its historic nuances. We hope your travels bring you back our way again soon.

We recently stayed at the Hotel. Upon arrival we were told our room faces the parking lot, and if interested to have an ocean view room. There will be additional premium for the upgrade.
We agreed to the ocean view room. The room was in the newer part of the hotel. The view from our balcony was spectacular, however the room itself was tired, the rugs, furniture, the bathroom. We thought for the added premium and overall rate, was excessive for just the view.

We asked to speak to the manager, who was Ms. Megen Ledbetter for that day. Ms ledbetter was very gracious, did everything possible to accommodate our concerns. I understand they are updating some of the rooms which need attention. We believe the hotel deserves a four star, once all the rooms are updated.

The hotel is perfectly located to access all area restaurants, tourist attractions. We took the hop on and off bus, which stopped across the street from the hotel, which was very helfull and gave us a good overview of San Diego.

A wonderful experience but not for the traveler on a budget. An experience to remember. I stayed in the hotel over the Christmas holidays. From checking in to checking out everyone was wonderful. The decorations are exceptional. The spa treatments are awesome. The location of the resort is great for sightseeing in San Diego.
