“An amazing resort!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2012

Words cannot describe how magical one feels at this resort. History, the beach and great service. A lot of kids, but is is a family location. Great spa, Sheerwater for breakfast with a shrimp omelette and a great happy hour. They have cheap wine from 4-7 and good appetizers. You can skip dinner and get by on less than $25 person at happy hour.

Bottom line is the great service puts the Del as a must visit in SD.

First off I want to say Hotel del Coronado is a beautiful piece of property and I'm so glad to have stayed there. The "Del" has everything you need and more regarding restaurants and shops, even though the restaurants are very expensive. Even though it was very crowded, we never felt uncomfortable as The Del is very fun-filled place and happy place. One surprise on my part is that it's not a "dressy" place per se and that casual attire is the predominant fashion. Many nights we felt over-dressed. We were there for a mother-daughter trip and really enjoyed the spa. Room-wise we were in the Ocean Towers, which were great for us due to their proximity to the adult only pool and the less crowded of the resort's two beaches. If I can complain about anything it would be the room decor. Although the room was very spacious and clean, it did need minor updating. One other complaint is the staffing - or lack there of - of Concierge.

Room Tip: We were first assigned to room 6122 in The Ocean Towers, which was very dark, depressing and looked...

I spent four days, three nights at the Del at the end of June. We were there for a conference, which was lovely. My parents had honeymooned there in 1966, so I'd grown up with stories about the Del. It is a gorgeous old property.. The beach is lovely, the service is great - but the rooms need some help.. I could hear every noise in the hallway due to the 3" gap between my door and the doorframe. The windowsills are sagging.. The antique elevator, although adorable, is a pain in the butt when there are tons of people checking in at the same time. The food was lovely. The shops are fun. Overall, I'd go back, but make sure to upgrade to a room that has the ocean view and ensure that your door actually seals..

Room Tip: Spend the money on the upgrade to the ocean view.

Thank you for your feedback and we are happy that you had the opportunity to stay at The Del. We like to think we have something for everyone—from the historic charm of the 125-year old Victorian building to the more spacious California Cabanas and Ocean Towers to the luxury cottages and villas at Beach Village. We hope to welcome you back again soon.

We just returned from our family vacation at the Del. This is the 2nd family vacation there and the 4th time overall I have stayed there. We stayed 5 nights and I have to tell you, I could have tripled the length of the stay and not gotten tired of it.

The service, as always, was excellent. The grounds were perfect and well kept. The one slightly irritating was the "Benches and Bars" conference they had brought a lot of business people that tended to take over any of the bar areas. But, no big deal.

Some tips on staying at the Del:

Room: I love the Victorian Building. They just remodeled this year, so the rooms are beautiful. If you have a family with 4 or more, youknow how hard it is to find a hotel room in San Diego that can accomodate you without going to just 2 queens. At the Del, look for one of the King Suites. They are not much more money and they have 2 queens and a queen pull out sofe, 2 large TVs and a closet that serves as a dressing room too. Room 3123 (second year in that room) is listed as "No view" but I disagree. Sitting on the patio outside the room, I could see the beach very well, but didn't have to pay for an ocean view. Also, I found a special for 5 nights, but only pay for 3. This was a great deal.

Food: The food at the Del is excellent. However, there are so many good restaurants within walking distance, you will get great food at 1/4 the price if you venture down Orange Ave. For breakfast, you cannot beat Clayton's coffee shop. Also for dessert. Amazing pies! Casa Azul was a very fun mexican restaurant as well.

Drinks: If you are like me and like a scotch before bed, walk down the street 2 blocks and buy a bottle of something good for far less than the bar downstairs. I will say, though, some time spent relaxing in the bar, listening to the music is time very well spent too.

Parking: Join AAA before you drive over. It will cut the parking costs in half.

Dessert: Go to the ice cream shop at the Del and order one of their custom sundaes. Its worth every single calorie. Also there is a candy store in town that is a blast for the kids.

Fun: On the South side of the boardwalk, you can rent a 4 person bike. Rent one as a family and take the long route around the island. It is a blast and the sight seeing is wonderful.

I really can't re-iterate how much I love this place. I get up in the morning about 0630 and hit the beach for a run while it was overcast. My wife would get up around 8 as the sun was breaking and we would walk to breakfast. Bringing food back for the kids, we would wake them about 0930 to start the day. There is nothing like the Del in a summer morning.

Oh, one word of warning. We made a tactical error and took the kids looking for the 2 haunted rooms late one night. Apparently it freaked them out more than I thought. My Son (11) came screaming across the room after lights out insisting that he felt someone breathe on his neck. This happened the first 2 nights until we calmed him down on the third night. Oops. Bad Dad.

We went and stayed over spring break (was not too crowded either), and every cent was worth it! The hotel was stunning and the views and beach matched. The hotel is a bit pricey, but not outrageous. Definitely a great place to stay, located right on the beach at coronado island. This hotel also is bit famous from having famous stars stay here as well as having one of marilyn monroe's movies filmed here. I would go back in a heart beat!

Thank you for your kind support and we’re pleased that you enjoyed your stay. Coronado was just voted #1 beach in America and The Del puts you just steps away from where Marilyn Monroe romped on the beach during the filming of Some Like It Hot. We look forward to your return.

What a fabulous resort! Even though I was there on business, I felt like I was on vacation since I was surrounded by couples enjoying dinner and families of multiple generations headed for the beach. Rooms were well-appointed, and I loved having the ocean air waft in from my provate balcony.

Went for short family vacation. 3 night stay. arrived on sunday which was a mad house due to the bruch and the fact that most of their common facilities are open to the public. took several minutes for valet to acknowledge us. Check in was easy and they provided us a free roll away bed (since there was a resort fee of $25 the clerk offered the free rollaway without us having to ask). Did not get our requested upgrades as hotel was full. the JR suite is moderately sized room with a king bed, pullout couch, 2 tvs and a mini fridge. the balcony with ocean view was very nice, though not enough room for 4 people. there are many restaurants and shops as this is a tourist hotel. Prices are sky high (600+ for room), but we knew what we were in for. Pool is large once weekend people were gone, things settled down and there was plenty of room for the guests to spread out. the town offeres a few mediocre restaurants, the hotel restaurants were much better quality and the kids ate for $5 (including a fantastic breakfast buffet). Only real complaint with the property was the room bathroom size. it was tiny (10x10 3 peice bath). there was absolutely no room for toiletries.

Thank you for your feedback and we’re thrilled that you enjoyed your stay at the Del and dining experiences. As a National Historic Landmark, weekends and holidays are a busy time with visitors but there are plenty of times during the year when it is quieter. We hope you and your family return again soon.
