“A perfect and relaxing spa vacation!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2012

While this was a spa vacation to a local resort (a stay-cation) it was worth every penny. I left the Del feeling rested and relaxed and refreshed. I had the spa package with a full ocean view and ended up with a room on the first floor, so close to the water. I could almost spit on the sand, I was so close. I could see the waves crashing on shore and, at nighttime, could lay in bed and listen to the waves.

The spa part of the vacation was lovely. The public areas of the spa itself are fairly small (this hotel was not built as a spa resort after all), but they are comfortable. The individual rooms are lovely and quiet, and the infinity pool (for spa guest only so NO CHILDREN) was lovely. The attendants are very attentive and friendly, and the therapists definitely enjoy working at the Del.

Because I'm a vegetarian, I had a bit of a problem with dinner at Sheerwater, even though I had made a reservation weeks ago and had confirmed I wanted something special the evening I had dinner. Eventually, after sending the waiter back to talk to the chef several times, I ended up with lovely meal that consisted of two side dishes and a "comes with" (the sweet corn risotto that "comes with" a seafood dish). I was a bit disappointed that I kept getting told I could have a quinoa burger or stir fried veg or a salad, when the menu is more deluxe than that for non-vegetarians. (My pet peeve anywhere... please don't throw a salad or something random and boring and call it a vegetarian meal. Make MY meal as special as any one's, please.)

Wednesday evenings, Eno (the wine bar), has a lovely half-price cheese flight special, and it was really REALLY lovely. Quite a lot of food, enough to bring back to the room and enjoy for lunch the next day along with fruit.

My room was in the California Cabanas, ground level, with a patio. It was a lovely location to sit and sip coffee in the morning, or an after dinner drink in the evening. This time of the year (early May) the beach was not crowded and it was relatively quiet and peaceful. The room was quite large and pleasantly decorated, and included bathrobes, refrigerator, and a coffee maker (and other standard amenities such as a room safe, iron, blow dryer).

The main pool area is large and attended to by friendly attendants. Overall, the rest of the grounds are lovely and once I oriented myself, it was lovely to walk around and enjoy the property, talk to the falconers (who help with bird abatement, keeping the sea gulls away), enjoy the sunshine...

But, the intent of the trip was a spa vacation at the beach, and that is exactly what I got. I was able to walk along the beach at sunrise and sunset (and watch whales cavorting), enjoy the sea air and listen to the waves crashing on shore, and just RELAX!!!

Really, the best spa vacation I've had. And worth every single penny I spent!!!

Room Tip: Hint: If you are looking for quiet during the day, do not stay underneath the Sun Deck as it can be...

We are thrilled that you enjoyed your "staycation" and achieved your goal of rest and relaxation. We apologize that aspects of your dining experience did not meet your expectations and understand your frustrations. To that end, we will share your comments with our culinary team so that we may make the necessary improvements. We hop you return soon for another spa vacation.

Wonderful experience at the Hotel Del. Staying there was a long time dream -- and our expectations were completely fulfilled!
Be sure to take advantage of the Sunday brunch, too.

This is a really nice hotel on the beach. Staff is nice and helpful. There are a lot of things to do and see within walking distance, and many good restaurants close by as well. Rooms are nothing to brag about but are clean and confortable and you should not be sitting in your room anyway.

Call the Hotel del Corondado and get voicemail? Just try to make a reservation with a real person....hahahaha.....jokes on you. You get routed, and rerouted...from 800 number to local number - then get dumped back to 800 reservations? Really? Seriously?? $300.00/night and there is not a human answering your phone??? For great breakfasts - and real people - go to http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=best+breakfast&find_loc=San+Diego%2C+CA
and guess what you find?? Real people and great food! And incredibly great prices.....the view is available to all folks....walk thru The Del, check out the pics and feel the nostalgic history...but if you want to reach a person, for mercy sake....don't call. Their voice operated mechanic phone mail are kind...but send you thru the loop....

Room Tip: All I was doing was trying to find out info about breakfast. Never did get the answer....all I was...

We come here every New Year's. The weather is nice, the hotel is fully booked, you can ice skate on the beach. The rooms in the Victorian Building can be small and noisy. We have never stayed in the larger building just off the pool area.
We do not eat at the Del restaurants, we walk down Organge Ave and find places to eat. We do like the Boathouse.
The Del is very busy at this time of the year. So be prepared to wait for everything. Check in can take 30 mins in line, we have waited over 30 mins for one round of drinkings at B&S, and the coffee bar, well forget it in the AM. You can walk to Panera and back before you can get helped there. In our last visit, we were on the sun deck bar and waiters passed us by and nobody would help us. We finally went to the bar and the bartender told us that he couldn't serve and he would send a waiter over. 5 minutes later, somebody came over. What a shame. I do need say that we had a problem at B&S and their manager did make a wonderful attempt to make things right with us, he definately listened to what we had to say and was very kind to us.
That being said, there is still no place that I'd rather be to celebrate the new year with my family and friends!

Room Tip: Try not to get a room facing the courtyard in the Victorian building. Every noice echos!

Hotel Del is a beautiful old hotel with breathtaking grounds. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. The restaurants are all wonderful. That being said, the rooms are in dire need of updating. The bed was uncomfortable, the pillows are airline quality, there was only one chair in the room. Housekeeping and maintenance could use improvement as there was food from the people before us in the refrigerator and one of our bathroom faucets was broken and hanging. If noise is an issue, you will hear planes from the naval base flying over all night.
On the positive side, the location is wonderful, on the ocean, within walking distance of shops and lots of restaurants.

Room Tip: If cost is not a factor, choose ocean view

I have stayed at many hotels in the past and of all those the Del is my very favorite. Everything you want is there and if you choose not to go away from the hotel all your needs will be met. You can stop and the prices are quite resonable and the quality is wonderful. I only had to turn my head to get a short, sweet hello from just about anyone. I love staying at the Del and also one person in particular who stood out was Andrew the elevator operator. When he is on service the atmosphere in the elevator is so pleasant and he is quite friendly. Hip Hip Hurray for Andrew!

Room Tip: the rooms facing the ocean are the best!!
