“Dive into the 1850s!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

Great hotel--very friendly people, comfy beds with giant headboards, beautiful antiques, quiet. (And we were told the place is haunted by a nice lady ghost.) Really cool to plunge yourself into the Old West Gold Rush experience. Staff gave us the code & demo on how to unlock front entrance to let ourselves back in at night--when we had the town nearly to ourselves! It was great to be in the center of town, walk to everything, no car traffic. Next day--gold panning, visit authentic displays of 1850s life, stage coach ride, old-time family portrait, and Sarsaparilla. (Yum) Our room did have air conditioning (control panel only allows down to 70), and does have WIFI! Plus robes, and disposible slippers. We had a bathroom, but showers down the hall--two seperate, locking rooms. We enjoyed our visit!

Room Tip: If the lady ghost pays a visit, she likes rooms 1 & 5. The front balcony was great, overlooking...

As others have said; this is a hotel that tries to look/feel like an 18XX era hotel. OK, so no TV, phone, etc, but the air conditioning works great. Wifi also worked fine. Read the other reviews and decide if a little adventure is what you want. You and the other guests are likely to be the only ones in "town" after the saloon closes. 95% of the town closes at 5PM - 6PM. The front desk will not be staffed in the evening, but when they are there, they are very friendly and helpful. The shared shower worked great; the continental bfast was on time and yummy. But getting in and out of the hotel at night might not be what you're used to, and in a few small ways, the experience is unlike anything else you'll get in the US. But we really enjoyed the antiques, the balcony off room 1, and the feeling that we were in a different era. It's a nice complement to the town itself.

Room Tip: Rooms 1 and 2 open out into the balcony in front, but they both have only double beds. If you want...

We stayed in the 2 bedroom cottage just off the main street area of the State Park. We were able to park and were just at the edge of the pedestrian only area. The cottage is clean and simple and has a full kitchen and a fenced in yard. Perfect location for the town and for the Gold Rush area sites and a short drive to Sonora. It was extremely quiet the whole time we were there. We would stay there again. There are a few drawbacks: There is no maid service, which was expected, but we were expected to really clean up the place when we left - even mop the floors. The cottage is huge, renovated, and comfortable, but has a very inefficient layout that doesn't make use of all the space. It only has a double and 2 twin beds. The place could easily have a fold out couch in the living room and even a futon in the mud room. We would have paid more to allow the whole family to stay. As it was, my bro's family stayed in the Fallon and we socialized and ate in the cottage. The store next door was open until 6pm and the small saloons were open until 8 or 9, but seemed to be the gathering places for colorful locals. We did enjoy our stay, but I want to give an accurate picture of the place during slow season.

Room Tip: Find out how many people they will let you have in the cottages. Reserve America doesn't have al...

Let's be honest...how often to you get to stay in a period hotel in a restored gold mining town, at a reasonable price? We loved the quaint rooms, furniture and wallpaper. The staff were great and very responsive. Just let them know what time you plan to arrive so they can help you plan your arrival. If you are looking for a fancy, modern hotel with all the amenities, this may not be for you.

The breakfast was good, and much more than expected.

We loved the town, museum and historical exhibits. Kate's Tearoom and El Jardin are both very good restaurants there. We stayed Sunday-Monday, and the town was quiet (in a good way) on Sunday evening and Monday.

Go!

We recently stayed overnight at the City Hotel in Columbia. It is truly a trip back in time!
Be aware.. there is no telephone in room, no television in room, no one in service at night, and you must go down the hallway to shower. We were given a key to the main door of the hotel with special directions as to how to get in after 9:00 p.m. All that having been said, it truly is an experience. You are back in the l800s. So if you want peace, quiet, and trip back in time, go for it!!

Fun, back in time place to visit. Hotel was originally built around 1870? 10 rooms, double beds with 1/2 baths. Private shower rooms just a few steps away.No phones or televisions to maintain authenticity. Wi-Fi is available. Continental breakfast served every day. Restaurant downstairs has excellent food. Old world, 19th century ambience is maintained everywhere. Want to get away from it all? This is the place.

Room Tip: Choose the balcony rooms, there are only 2 that face out on to the main street. Everyth\ing closes e...

Hotel is tired. It was clean. Bed was a full size and very uncomfortable. We won't stay there again. Our room opened to a balcony, however there was a very large step to get to the balcony. They provided robes and slippers.
