The two of us were able to squeeze in without a reservation on a busy Friday night in downtown Claremont. The menu is quite extensive but our waitress was quite helpful in our selection process. We shared an appetizer of Prosciutto e Burrata. This was a plate lined with prosciutto with a ball of burrata cheese, small heirloom tomatoes, and sprinkled with basil olive oil. The combination is very delicious. The mild soft cheese works well with the slightly salty meat. They should be more generous with the tiny tomatoes. A bite of the tomato-cheese-ham combination makes a perfect appetizer. For dinner, I had the Tagliata di Manzo from the small-plate offerings. This was a perfectly tender flat-iron steak with a red-wine reduction accompanied by garlic-infused mashed potatoes and vegetables. My companion ordered Salmon alla Griglia from the Heart Healthy menu. It contained a moist, flaky filet of salmon over spinach and cannellini beans. The meal was plated over a caperberry relish with tomatoes. Both of us enjoyed our entrees to the finish. We paired our dinner with a bottle of San Simeon Pinot Noir. This was a dry but fruity wine that went well with meat and fish. For dessert we shared a Crespelle which is cream-filled crepe covered by fried bananas and a lemon-tinged whip cream. The plate was drizzled with chocolate sauce. Very satisfying.
The restaurant is probably one of the best to be found between Pasadena and Ontario. The service was good up until we paid the bill, then the crew sort of disappeared. I had to track down a busboy to get a bag for our leftover wine and would have liked a refill on my coffee but left without it. The wine list is extensive and trends to the expensive. $100 bottles are okay if you have some great French wines, but they specialize in Italian vintages. Our Pinot was reasonable at $38, but selection in this price range is wanting. The restaurant features linen tablecloths and napkins with a small candle at each table. The decor is complete with framed art on the walls and large picture windows overlooking the street. It provides a wonderful dining experience.
