My wife and I were planning our 10 year anniversary, and we wanted to go to San Diego. Our honeymoon was at a B&B, so it seemed natural to go with tradition. Our on-line search provided us with a number of possibilities. But, unfortunately, we had to mix business with pleasure. And fortunately, the El Primero Boutique Bed & Breakfast was just in the right spot!

My wife was quite pleased with the accommodations. Our room was small but comfortable. And most of all… clean!! We both have allergies, so traveling can be a problem. But, the rooms were spotless. What a relief.

The El Primero is family owned, and the owner, Pie, was more than good to us. He helped us arrange our activities, find local highlights, provided directions, etc., etc. He told us about the busses, and were to go. He showed us maps for the trains. He double checked our route to the airport. Actually, we left our vacation having felt we had met a new friend. And I think that is the key attribute to El Primero’s obvious success.

The other patrons we spoke with had stayed there many times. Some were on vacation, and some were on business. It was clear enough why: sufficient access to restaurants, 10 minutes from San Diego yet not in down town San Diego, a great breakfast that was hassle free, and good service. As for local restaurants, they were good too: Thai, Sushi, Hawaiian, barbeque, Mexican, etc. We would definitely recommend the El Primero to our friends.

After reading the reviews on TripAdvisor, I decided to stay at The El Primero Hotel. I can truly say, and so will my 7 yr-old daughter, that this has been the most wonderful vacation we've ever had! From the food, the immaculate room, that very comfortable bed, Pie's outstanding service, our safety during our stay - all of these just made our vacation so great.
If you like that "home away from home" feeling - this is just the place for you!!!!

I'd like to keep this little gem a secret so it does not get too hard to book a room, but...

What a delight it was to stay here! The property is historically charming with just the right vibe to make it a true boutique hotel: not too big, not too small, not too ostentatious, not too spare. Perfect!

I had the breakfast buffet both mornings -- sausage, bacon, a delicious individual egg quiche, breads, juice, coffee and on and on -- served in the kitchen! I loved it! They do have a small dining room and nice courtyard but it was early so I sat in the cozy kitchen with Pie, the owner, and another guest.

The rooms are tastefully furnished and very comfy(!); the bathrooms are modern and well appointed. I am a "fussy" guest and Pie met every one of my room requests, graciously!

The next time you are in San Diego/Chula Vista area, meet wonderful Pie and his family, and enjoy this unique resting place they call El Primero. It is truly that!

We stayed at El Primero after attending a local concert. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable of the area. The proprietor (Pie) has hosted many international guests and has several stories to share. The room was cute, comfortable, and clean. The breakfast included numerous selections and was exceptional. We really recommend the egg fritada!

My wife & I took our annual anniversary vacation this year in San Diego. We read good reviews about this little B&B near San Diego in a place caled Chula Vista. We were pleasantly suprised to find this historic little hotel to be a gem! The owners have painstakenly renovated this hotel and it is clean as a whistle! The 20 rooms don't have numbers, instead they are themed and each is named after a famous San Diego landmark. We stayed n the Mission De Alcala room which was cozy but very nicely decorated! The main thing is the cleanliness of the rooms and the friendliness of the staff! The complimentary breakfast each morning was an added bonus and the food was wonderful. My wife and I plan to return next year for a jazz festival and we will definitely book another stay at this legendary little establishment!

  • Liked — The cleanliness and the great customer service!
  • Disliked — The area was a little on the urban fside but we had NO problems whatsoever!

Only my husbands name and reserve date was taken, leaving off the phone and bank card numbers, so eventually they threw our reservation away and gave the room away.
We called at 3 p.m. the day of, to let them know we were on our way, only to be told we didn't have a reservation and that the reservation number we had was not recognized. We spent nearly 3 hours calling home so our eldest could look up B&Bs and give us numbers to call, none of which recognized our reservation. Finally, we found a place with wifi and my husband looked at the El Primero site and said he knew that was the place. We called back and insisted we had a reservation and were told the story of the "lost reservation' and how it was thrown away after a month because we hadn't called back.
No statements of "oops, we messed up, so sorry." Just told they had a room for one night but not for the two nights we needed and that they wished we had called to confirm our room sooner.

They gave us a $150 a night room at our $120 a night rate. The room was tiny, clean and so noisy, we had to sleep with windows closed and the AC on. In the morning, with the windows open, we could hear the conversation of the people at the bus stop across the street. Also, we expected a B&B more like a home and not a hotel. The place was clean, the breakfast nice and the owners kind enough. No one offered to help us find a room for the next day, but with the free WiFi we found one on our own.
And lastly, there was a tiny sign in the bath saying to "only take showers".
Nope, wouldn't stay there again.

  • Liked — that it was clean
  • Disliked — the noise, even with windows closed and AC on, the ac was too noisy.

We just stayed for 2 nights at the El Primero Hotel and it was a VERY nice stay. Pie and Sol the owners were gracious and accommodating. They made us all feel right at home and by the end of the 2 days it was like we were leaving family. It was hard to say good bye. We would definitely stay at the El Primero Hotel again when we visit Chula Vista. Our room was very comfortable and clean. This building has been entirely renovated and is a work of art. And the breakfast in the morning was excellent and a great way to start off the day. If visiting Chula Vista, I'd highly recommend this bed and breakfast as "the place to stay" We look forward to our next visit. Thanks again Pie and Sol!!!!
