“Perfect way to enjoy San Diego”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2009

This was our second time staying at this KOA location. As with our last stay, It was me, my wife and 5 kids and some extended family. We rented 2 two room Kabins. It worked out perfectly and we saved a lot of money because we cooked our own breakfast and dinners and were able to eat our lunches at restaurants on Coronado Island and Seaport Village.

It is in a great location. Only 15 minutes Coronado island, Navy Pier, and Silverstrand State Beach. Lots more sea shells there than Coronado. There is a shopping area just down the street for grocery shopping or eating at one of the restaurants. So many things to do there but we didn't have enough time. Of course I couldn't have navigated the crazy freeways there without my GPS. For us it was a must.

It was really cold at night in the Kabin so we had to get a heater from the office at a small charge. The Kabins are close to the bathrooms and showers and we also liked the Kamp Kitchen where we did some of our cooking. We enjoyed the pool also. They have bike rentals of all types but we ran out of time.

Overall it was a great trip and a great stay. Our next trip to San Diego we will be staying again at the KOA in Chula Vista.

san diego metro koa caters to folks who tent, rv, or stay in one of their cabins. It is actually located in Chula Vista and is approx 25-30min from Seaworld, cabrillo NP, seaport village and other san diego sights. We stayed during the labor day weekend in our toy hauler. Because it was a holiday weekend, the place was extremely packed and the RV sites were VERY CLOSE together, we got a backin site and the KOA host had to ask a few neighboring RVers to move their cars so that there will be room to back our 28' toy hauler into our spot. I would suggest getting a pull thru for anything over 23'.

Also each site allows up to 8 guests but my sister/brother in-law were charged $4 per person per night anyway because they came in a separate car (also another fee of $5 per car per night) (so including my husband and i and our kids - 6yr old 10mos old only adds up to 6, even though children are free so the total count is actually 4).

perhaps it's because we stayed during labor day weekend, the place was messy, pool overcrowded, kids walking thru other people's sites, running/screaming everywhere (with no adult supervision around)...we stayed because it is approx 30 minutes from seaworld and other san diego sights.

KOA is simply a clean well organized park for both tent and RV camping with full hookups. If you are looking for a relatively quick get away for the weekend KOA-San Diego is approx 95 mi from Orange Count about an 1 hr 45 min drive. The positives are the park is well maintained with year round planned activities. The area is a park like setting versus a outdoor wilderness setting . If you want to feel far removed from society this is not the park; however if you appreciate convienience and many camping comforts it is a great experience. They have rental equip from bikes of all types to sports equip a playground near entrance and of course a large pool. In addition an arcade and a fully stocked general store and free portable fire pits upon request. There are few negatives such as a lack of supervision at the pool which creates an undesirable atmoshphere when busy. Kids typically never followed simple posted rules in the 3 times we visited nor was there any sign of enforcement. The final negative is an adjacent freeway which on a scale from 1-10 ten the loudest was a 4 maybe. It did not bother us but if it does you can notify park that your prefence is to be away from the freeway which would minimalize sound to near 0. Overall we reccomend this park to anyone who is looking for a quick get away and desires convienience in a "park like" setting. Rver's can expect pull though level sites with their full hookups and cable. Plan on spending a few extra dollars if you bring kids and you are allowed one free tow vehicle.

We had a great stay at this campground. The staff is wonderful! The park is very clean and nice. There is a playground and pool. There is a game room for the children when you have to clean your laundry. They have a small camp store. The rooms were surprisingly big. Two sets of bunkbeds and a seperate room for privacy. It was fifty dollars for all of us.

We try to stay here everytime ---- the problem is finding Kabin availability ---- they are reserved so far ahead of time.

The staff is very friendly and take gride strides to keep the campground operational and clean.

The campground is safe and secluded from the outside.

This is one of the best KOAs around --- I wish there was another KOA in San Diego Metropolitian.

Our family stayed at the Chula Vista KOA for 7 nights this August. We were very impressed, and plan on making it an annual trip. This campground is nicely landscaped, SO CLEAN and well maintained! The staff is vigilant in making everyone's stay a fun and safe time! The campsites were nice sized. Ours was up against a hill with plenty of room for our kids to play. It may get a little crowded on the weekends, but still a very safe family place. The gates are closed at night, and the pool, laundry room, and store are very clean, and reasonably priced. Every staff member we dealt with was friendly and helpful. It is an easy drive to SD attractions...15 mins to the Zoo and Sea World, etc... Only draw back was some problem with ants...just be sure to bring your spray with you! Also, if you are a camper that likes to stay ina more rustic, natural campground, this is not the place for you! I prefer to be 3 minutes from a Starbucks, so this style of camping suits me fine! If it is your style too, try this place!
