We spent two nights at the Pierpointe Inn in mid-August. We had an upstairs room directly overlooking the beach and pier. The room was very large, clean and very nicely furnished. It included a balcony (from where we could see south to Morro Rock), a fireplace, a large TV with cable, and a jacuzzi bathtub. We paid $275 a night, which is probably one of the best deals you can get along the California lower coast for ocean front property these days. Note, the place is more a small inn, and not really a bed and breakfast. You do not get the fancy, big breakfasts offered in most bed and breakfast places, nor their personalized touches. On the other hand, you feel more like you are in a hotel rather than invading someone's personal home.
The beach in front of the hotel is wonderful, though the weather was a bit cool if you like to lay out in the sun or go in the water without a wet suit (as is common in the central coast). There were some nice tide pools a short walk to the north. Cayucos is a small town with little to see or do there, other than the beach. However, there is lots to do in the area. Besides Hearst Castle, there are a number of fine wineries within an hour's drive. We had great dinners in Cayucos at Hoppe’s Garden & Bistro (a short walk down the street) one night, and Schooner’s Wharf (next door) the next, and recommend both.
