We ended up in Cayucos after some spur-of-the-moment planning for my nine-year-old daughter's spring break. We knew we wanted to see Hearst Castle, but that was our only requirement. When one of our friends heard about this, he recommended staying in Cayucos (he had lived there) and when we checked TripAdvisor, the Cayucos Beach Inn looked like it was worth a try. I was a little unsure of the place as it really caters to people who travel with pets. We have cats who aren't much into car trips, so we don't do this. The last thing I wanted was a room that smelled like someone's dog or (much worse) a flea attack. The reviews were positive, though, so we figured we'd give them a shot.
We ended up with an "ocean view" suite. This was a first floor suite that consisted of a living room/kitchen/sitting room and a separate bedroom. There was a futon in the living room for our daughter and a fairly comfy king bed in the bedroom for us. The room was not fancy by any means, but it had a microwave and a refrigerator and it was very clean. No doggy odors whatsoever.
There was a serviceable continental breakfast served in another room. Pretty standard stuff, but reasonably good quality.
Location was great. In March, anyway, Cayucos appears to be a fairly sleepy town. There aren't a lot of great restaurants, but there are plenty of places to get a decent meal and a good coffeehouse if you want something a step up from the hotel coffee. There's beach access about a block away from the hotel. And of course, you're within easy driving distance of Hearst Castle, Moro Bay, the Paso Robles wineries, and plenty of other wonderful attractions.
Service at the hotel was very good. The people there were very accomodating and pleasant to deal with. The unexpectedly great part of this was the dogs. My daughter loves animals, and both the hotel's staff and many of their guests had plenty of friendly pooches for her to meet and pet. She really loved this aspect of staying there, and it made for a lot of fun for all of us. We hope to get back there next year for spring break.
