Carpinteria State Beach is a gem. We've been there 5 times in the last 6 months and going again and again. The first was in Sept '08 just before school started. What a zoo but the beach and facilities were awesome. Proximity to the beach is great and the town is only a couple blocks away with grocery, restaurants, and touristy shops. Farmer's Mkt on Thursday afternoons. Beachcombing is good with lots of shells. The train tracks nearby make life interesting but you get used to it (except when the daily 4am freight makes it's appearance!)
3 types of camping: full & partial hookups and are in a former parking lot with lots of trees. It's very congested when full and the kids make it worse (I'm retired, can you tell?). Beach side spots have a lot of sand in your campsite to deal with but the unimpreded view of the beach seems worth it. Tent camping area has lots of room, a creek, and trees. Small RV's allowed in tent camping area but it's dry camping.
As a campground generally, it's great but tight. Off season, it's lightly used and people are much friendlier and nicer.
