“Charming place to stay in a great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

Carmel is a charming place to visit and the Wayside Inn was a charming, conveniently located place to stay. The Inn is just a short walk from Carmel's main shopping street, which leads down to the beach. We had a lovely suite which comprised a spacious lounge with fireplace, small kitchen, bathroom and spacious bedroom. Our room was accessed from a wooden, outdoor flight of steps. The only fault I could really find with our room was perhaps the fact that you had to walk through the bathroom (from the lounge) to get to and from the bedroom - although the layout was a little unusual, it wasn't really a problem. A "picnic" breakfast was provided in the morning, which obviously required a bit of DIY, but it was perfectly adequate.

Room Tip: If you are less mobile, or have a lot of luggage (as we did), you might want to request a room on th...

We have stayed at several of the smaller hotels in Carmel. This one is our favorite. The inn is small and cozy, but the rooms are generous in size. We had a separate living room with a eating area (they deliver breakfast each morning), bedroom and good size bathroom. Location was a block from the main street and walking distance from the beach. I would definitely stay here again.

This older property has one good thing going for it - its location on the edge of Carmel's shopping district with its multitude of shops, restaurants, jewelry stores and art gallerys. This positive, howver, is a negative as well, as the location is at a stop signed intersection with cars and trucks stopping and then accelerating at the stop sign with resultant noise, at all hours of the night.
The property has been subject to rennovation by the owners to upgrade it. While our newly renovated bathroom was nicely done with a superdeep tub to soak in, our opinion was that other than the bath renovation, the physical layout of the rooms just didn't work. King sized (and very comfortable) beds were stuffed into rooms that just weren't spacious enough to hold them and permit someone to readily get by the end of the bed to reach each side; the bedroom lacked a TV; and the walls seemed to be paper thin, every noise from the outside or an adjoining unit coming right through the walls.
With all the hotels and inns in the area, we'll try another next visit.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the rear of the property away from the street noise.

Thank you for your review. Our convenient location next to downtown Carmel can sometimes bring noise from the many visitors that come to our area. On most days the shops and restaurants close by 9-10pm, but once in a while there are days when there seem to be more people out and about a little later. One of the exciting aspects of our renovation is that while we are not a very large property, we have different kinds of rooms in different layouts ranging from newer rooms with the larger Jacuzzi tubs to more traditional rooms with kitchen areas for convenience. While it sounds like the guest room you stayed in did not have a layout that you enjoyed, we appreciate your feedback and hope that you’ll give us another try if you find yourself in the Carmel area again.

The Wayside is great place to use as a base of operations if you are taking on the wine tasting Carmel has to offer, not too mention the shopping and walking on the beach! The rooms are always immaculate and the service is excellent.

This hotel is in a great location, easy walking to restaurants and shopping in this charming small village. Our room was huge with a kitchenette area, large sliding door closet, fireplace, and double door balcony. Room was well appointed and it was nice to be in a "designer" room that has its own personality and had not morphed into the minimal contemporary look at most other hotels. It fit the elegance of the city and the style of the hotel. Front desk staff was wonderful and gave us a great recommendation for dinner. Our only regret was that we were staying only one night. Would definitely recommend.

Thank you for your review. We are very glad you enjoyed your guest room. Our location gives our guests the opportunity to have the quintessential “Carmel experience” of strolling by the shops and galleries while still just being a few minutes away from the Inn. It sounds like after one night you still have plenty to explore in our wonderful area, and we hope you will join us for that trip.

My wife and I were staying at the Hyatt Regency in Monterey and visited Carmel on a trip - we loved it and decided to spend a couple of days in Carmel. The Wayside Inn seemed like a great place so we checked in for two days.

The good stuff:
a. You are a short walk from the town centre, there are lots of great restaurants around and the hotel looks great at night
b. The rooms are huge and well furnished, the beds are very comfortable and the linens are great
c. The receptionist and cleaning staff are helpful and cheerful

But the less good stuff:
a. The in room breakfast is pathetic, a few slices of bread to toast, stale muffins in cling-film, cheap yoghurt and an fruit. I would expect more for the money
b. There was a strange smell in the room, no idea what it was but it something wasn't right

You should be aware that you are staying in an old wooden building which creaks a lot and there is street noise like drilling going on. There is nothing wrong with this, it is an old building and the creaks add character, the street noise is to be expected in any town environment - just be aware.

And finally, with the benefit of hindsight I would have stayed in the Hyatt a few extra nights and driven to Carmel to walk around and eat.

This is a wonderful little Inn to stay in the heart of Carmel, CA. Just 3 blocks and you are in the center of town enjoying all the wonderful shops and restaurants. The Inn is quaint, well managed, accommodating staff and very reasonable. Parking can be difficult, but there are spaces for one car per room. The rooms are large with nice kitchenettes. We stay here every August for the big car shows. The breakfast bags are good, but would like to see them add mini quiches instead of just cereal and fruit. Our room has a balcony and a blue jay visits us every day. The bathrooms are in need of upgrading especially the fixtures and I think some new carpeting is in order, but overall, a very nice place to stay and would recommend it.

Room Tip: The premium suites have two large rooms with a fireplace and are quite nice.
