“Wonderful Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago

It started with great service at check in. We were early... our room wasn't quite available, but the person said she would call as soon as it was. In the meantime she had great suggestions for different things I needed. The excellent service continued throughout our stay.

It's close and easy walking distance to the beach and slightly more of a walk, but still a very easy walk to downtown Carmel. The grounds are lovely, the room was nice and comfortable, and breakfast was (unexpectedly) delicious with quite a variety of food options.

The La Playa Carmel used to be my favorite and special place of all of the hotels in the world. It used to be very serviced oriented and its staff was very attentive without being intrusive and was perhaps the best of any place that I have ever stayed. While they offer a wine tasting in the evening (1 hours- don't miss it if you want to try less expensive wine) and complimentary breakfast (with freshly prepared omelets prepared by an expert chef--best I have ever had), I really wish they would train their staff in the old way. It was such a better experience. My experience was that the staff was very obtrusive, not very nice, would not do anything above and beyond, and generally carry a very "whatever" attitude. The reason I go to the La Playa is the above and beyond in a very no obtrusive way. It was disappointing to stay the least

We have stayed there 7 times, so beyond that, the room we were assigned was odd. While the room was very nice, it was noisy front he street noise. The front desk advised us that the hotel was less than 30% occupied. So I am very confused by the front desks advice that the hotel would charge an extra $100 for a upgrade to a nicer room--especially for two days, which is the full price of the room. I just find the entire experience at the hotel....1) not what I wanted for a relaxing time, 2) not what I expected of the La Playa, 3) not good at all for customer service, 4) not good for the idea of customer service, which is why I go the hotel in the first place.

Over all it was just extremely disappointing when I have searched out the hotel to stay in.

Charming vintage structure, ocean views, congenial and responsive staff, and good food; tucked into a quiet neighborhood of storybook homes . . .what more could you ask for? Well, if it was a sweltering day, maybe air conditioning and an elevator -- neither of which, the property has. However, on this early November stay, we had the windows open to enjoy the sea air and hear the pounding surf for the entire several days. The beach,100 restaurants, twice as many art galleries, and all manner of small shops are all within walking distance. Perfect.
We've been here before and WE'LL BE BACK.

The La Playa Inn is lovely and the grounds are beautiful. The staff is attentive and helpful and very efficient. The rooms are small but that is to be expected in an inn like this, although they do seem to be over priced. But it is very noisy in the room; the walls are thin and the floors are not well insulated so that footsteps reverberate down into the room. The acoustics are also such that if you have an ocean view room you can hear the noises from the bar very plainly, and drinkers are seldom polite or quiet. We were very disappointed and will try to find someplace next time where we can relax in peace and better enjoy Carmel well rested.

A beautiful hotel just two or so blocks from the beach. We were welcomed after a drive down from San Francisco to a glass of wine in the cozy lounge. car parking is easy in the streets near the hotel. We had a "village view" room with not much of an outlook but the room itself was really nice. Spacious, comfortable king size bed, well-fitted bathroom and, unusually, plenty of luggage space. There is no restaurant as such but snacks/light meals are available in the bar and we had tasty salads on the evening of our arrival. Breakfasts are served either on the terrace or "dining room". They were first class, good choice, fresh and nicely served. The hotel is some way from the shopping centre and restaurants and the hotel offers a much-needed complimentary limousine service in the evenings. The grounds are well tended and the feeling is very much of being looked after in somebody's home. The staff were all very helpful. I have deducted one star as on the Saturday night we were there, there was a pre-wedding party which ran on past 11.00 pm and was very noisy. One guest in particular had more than one drink too many, was loud and careless with his language. It didn't bother us that much as were up playing Best Fiends, which is a hugely enjoyable and addictive game available free from the App Store, but it could have spoilt the evening if we had retired early or were sensitive to "industrial language". I mentioned it to the reception in the morning and they were apologetic. But all in all, a charming hotel and one to which we would like to return.

Room Tip: Try to choose an ocean view room. The village view is uninspiring.

This was the perfect place for a getaway with girlfriends. The ocean view rooms are amazing, the included champagne breakfast was the best spread ever, the staff always had a smile and maintained professionalism at all times and the garden grounds are so peaceful you never want to leave. But, the architecture and location of this historic building is what made me fall in love with it. It has been nicely updated, but hasn't lost its charm. Now I just need to bring my husband back for a romantic weekend!
