“Timeless and classy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed today NEW

Carmel exudes class! And we thought we had chosen the best hotel here by far! Elegant, old-style Californian charm. The rooms and bathrooms are quite small (especially after spending last week at the Bellagio,Las Vegas!) but you have to remember that this an historic hotel. Carmel tries to keep its town residential and discourages large scale commercialism. The residents live on the beautiful coast road overlooking the ocean and one of the best beaches I have had the pleasure to walk. We were only one block back but had a lovely ocean view as the road rises steeply from the ocean to the main little charming, quaint town. One thing to bear in mind is that although there a quite a few bars and restaurants everything closes down early and there are no street lights! We got in a pickle one night trying to eat at 8.30/9.00 and then got lost trying to find our way back in total darkness! Take a torchlight if you go into town!

The hotel staff are exceptional for such a young team - courteous and could not do enough for us. They run a complimentary shuttle to take you hither and thither and you can ask for some great beach chairs to take to the beach. Complimentary wine hour from 5.30 to 6.30 with a beautiful terrace to drink in the sunset. There is always a fire going in the lounge for the chillier evenings - and even in July it does get chilly so take warm casual elegant clothing and wraps and scarves and leave your maxi dressy dresses at home ladies - Leave those for the med!

Dolphins were in the bay while we were there so keep a look out!

Oh and the breakfasts here are fantastic - best omelettes in a long time and lots of choices - try the waffles and make your own yoghurt parfait with the beautiful fruit selection - there is always a bottle of champagne also to help yourself along with fresh orange juice .... Or you just might want it neat!

Room Tip: Ocean view every time!

OUTSTANDING location...two blocks from a magnificant beach, two blocks from "downtown"..great staff...champagne flows at all times...wine tasting nightly,,,shuttle into town for dinner...buffet breakfast on the outside terrace with a view of the Pacific....granted a little pricey, but worth it for a special occasion...

Room Tip: Garden view is worth the extra $$

Gorgeous Spanish Style Property with a roaring fireplace as you enter into the Lobby. The staff were so friendly and helpful - recommending spots for dinner in town, which is only a short walk away. The hotel is located in a residential area near the beach so it doesn't feel touristy and you can hear the ocean at night from your room. Our room was spacious, the bed comfy and very clean. Breakfast was delightful on the balcony with a good mix of hot and cold goodies to choose from. Breakfast is also included which is a bonus! The grounds were just beautiful - perfectly manicured gardens, a giant chess board, inviting lounges and umbrellas. We only had 1 night there and neither of us wanted to leave! Cant wait to return to this beautiful West Coast Paradise!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with an ocean view. Also if you have a lot of luggage you might prefer to stay on the...

First the good news: the location is quiet yet only a short walk into town, there's a pleasant Spanish-mission ambience, staff are very friendly and helpful, the included breakfast is great. Overall presentation of public areas & gardens is excellent.

Unfortunately the overall experience is badly let down by the rooms which come nowhere near matching the +$600 nightly rates. Size is cosy and they’re very clean, but there’s no disguising they are old with only a superficial facelift. Bathrooms are a fair effort considering their age, but barely match hotels elsewhere for 30% of the cost. The decorators have made several nice detail touches, but the age and low grade construction means they’re still as noisy as a $120/night chain motel. Despite the outward appearance of the hotel, rooms are only of timber construction. Noise insulation is poor, with neighbours' showering nearly drowning out the TV. And – no air conditioning or ventilation apart from opening the windows. I don't recall the last time we stayed in a hotel that didn't have air conditioning available. At 30-50% of the room rate these shortcomings could possibly be accepted, but definitely not at the price levels being charged.

We'd just come from significantly superior hotels in San Francisco and immediately after in Santa Barbara. Both were around half the cost and had none of these shortcomings. One can’t help thinking there’s a hefty “Carmel premium” being charged beyond what's being offered. I can’t comment on the cost of other local alternatives, but to be classed as decent value this hotel needs to drop its rates or dramatically raise its room standards. Quite disappointing since the staff and the public areas are otherwise great.

We came here as the last part of a brief honeymoon and it was wonderful. They brought out the champagne of course. Breakfast was lovely with handmade omelets, waffles, and other goodies. And the New York Times as well to linger over on the porch outside - heated if necessary. The staff were extremely helpful. The concierge went out of her way to find us yoga, make bike reservations, and help with restaurants. Views of the ocean are lovely and the proximity to the beach is a real plus. The rooms are a little bit dated, particularly the small bathroom, but on balance, a terrific experience.

Room Tip: 3rd or 4th floor, ocean view recommended.

Stayed for only one night on route down the west coast... wished we could have stayed longer!

This is a cosy little property in the heart of Carmel with lovely rooms, gardens and public areas. Within walking distance to everything in Carmel, very near the beach and restaurants however should you wish, the hotel also provide a free shuttle service. We made good use of the complimentary wine tasting, cookies and milk and breakfast - all were of a high standard and a really nice touch! Staff also very helpful and accommodating.
Our favourite hotel during our 16 night stay in California!!
