“Romantic getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2014

This is an old hotel that has been kept up beautifully. The gardens and flowers are amazing and really add to the experience. I suggest you get the garden room with a patio and umbrella table--you will thoroughly relax there! Breakfasts are super with lots of delicious options. The staff is quite professional and very helpful. There are lots of steps and no elevators that I saw so getting around to all the venues might be difficult for some. The atmosphere is fun--the nightly wine tasting allows you to meet some of the guests who seem to come from all over the world and everyone seems so happy to be in this quaint, nicely done city.

Room Tip: A garden room--ours had its own deck--covered with the most wonderful flowers that smelled wonderful...

We stayed here for our anniversary (just got home today). When they heard it was our anniversary they UPGRADED us to a poolside room which was VERY BIG! Their website/photos don't do it justice. It is a dream. Great service, delicious food, GORGEOUS SCENERY, as well as the hotel itself. 5 STARS!!

We came to LaPlaya for a wedding. The gardens in the back were some of the most beautiful I have ever seen. It was a perfect setting for an outdoor wedding. The staff here is wonderful. Everyone has a smile on his/her face and is eager to assist. The breakfast is generous, although I would have liked a little more variety from day to day. The hotel has a great view of the beach and is only blocks away from shops and restaurants, but it is an uphill walk getting there. There is a fireplace in the lobby, free wine tasting in the evening, and heat lamps in the outdoor breakfast area. Nice places to sit and visit. We want to go back.

Room Tip: If you like to hear the sounds of the ocean, choose a ocean view room.

We just got back from a 2+ week vacation mostly on the CA coast. The highlight of our journey was our 3-night stay in Carmel and the La Playa Carmel resort there. We selected La Playa largely from TripAdvisor reviews and they were right on. We loved everything about this resort: the location, the staff, the breakfast, the room, and the garden & grounds. We really don’t know how they could be better.

The room was comfortable and clean with a great view of the sunset over the ocean. There was a welcoming bottle of champagne for our anniversary, which we very much enjoyed. Concierge Elizabeth Boullosa helped us before we arrived with suggestions for things to do and restaurants in Carmel. The location is on 8th Ave just 2 blocks from the beach and picturesque Carmel Bay and 2 blocks from Ocean Ave and all the shops there. The walk along Scenic Road was extraordinary and we had no parking problems as we simply walked from the resort. The resort is also within easy walking distance of the many restaurants, art galleries, and shops in downtown Carmel. The concierge staff made dinner reservations for us and provided maps and directions. And, if you don’t want to walk, they have a free shuttle service.

The champagne breakfast each morning was fabulous. Omelets, cereal, oatmeal, fruit, cheese, breads, with lots of extras. Words can’t really describe this but it was always a great way to start the day. The staff was exceptionally efficient keeping the area clean and stocked. The omelet guy is a real pro as he didn’t scorch the eggs, but still got it perfectly done in the middle.

The gardens are literally picture perfect - absolutely gorgeous. It was so nice to have breakfast each morning and look over the gardens at all the blooming flowers. Just off the lobby is a large room with a fireplace that was a very pleasant place to sit with a glass of wine and chill out after a busy day.

The prices are high end and you can argue over whether its worth it. Considering everything, we clearly thought the value was there and were very happy with our choice.

We enjoyed many things while in Carmel: including 17-mile drive, Point Lobos State Reserve, the Aquarium, and whale watching. And one of the best things was starting and ending each day at the La Playa Carmel resort.

Room Tip: Our room had a nice view of Carmel Bay. Many other rooms look over the exceptional garden which wou...

Nice hotel, good location, great breakfast buffet, but it is incredibly loud. We could hear every door close, along with conversations, showers running, and toilets flushing in the rooms next to us. Noises outside echoed in our room throughout the entire stay. Despite many good things about this hotel, I wouldn't stay here again because of the noise and the high price that came with our visit.

The hotel itself is beautiful, and the location just outside the main shopping area and two blocks from the beach was great. The complimentary champagne breakfast is wonderful - great selection of breakfast foods, and the covered outdoor porch was perfect even though the weather wasn't. Heat lamps and a fire pit made it comfortable, and we could even sneak a peak at the ocean. However - the service and room didn't quite make the grade. We arrived early and were told they would call us when the room was ready and place our luggage inside. We finally came back at 4:45 and they had done neither. Our room was next to the ice machine, so we asked to be moved. The second room was very small and in no way was worth the $300/night we paid. So needless to say we were a bit disappointed.

Room Tip: I guess to get a good room you have to pay top dollar - the least expensive rooms at $300 are not wo...

Hotel is a restored mansion, a few blocks from the beach in Carmel. I’m embarrassed for management, the fact that you are charging $$$ for small rooms, means this hotel is clearly all about the money, and not about the guest’s comfort or experience. For the prices being charged, there shouldn’t be a bad room in the place.

I stayed over Memorial day weekend with the girlfriend and literally the room was 10x10, no desk, a queen sized bed and a chair, that’s all it could fit. TV and fridge were mashed in the corner. Bathroom was small, but that was expected.

Cons: teeny rooms, high $$$, only a bar on site, no elevator for a 4 story place, somewhat hilly

Pros: free omelette bar and waffle bar on the weekends, location is central to Carmel and the beach, quiet neighborhood

Room Tip: It's a renovated mansion from 1916, the rooms were small back then and they haven't been exp...

Dear Moflicka,
Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay ay La Playa. I was sorry to learn of your disappointment in the size of your guest room and I apologize for any inconvenience this caused. La Playa was built in 1906 and a few of our guest rooms reflect the architectural style and scale of it's time. Should your future plans include Carmel, I would be happy to personally arrange a larger room for you. Please contact me personally if I may be of assistance in arranging a return visit.
Sincerely ,
Mary Crowe
