“Close to the beach hotel. Renovated rooms, nice service!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 24, 2013

This hotel is really close to the beach. There is a parking but if it is full it is easy and free to park on the streets nearby. Very easy.
Nice service, nice breakfast with a full, breakfast included.

One reccomendation: Do not bring a lot of bags and stuff because this hotel is from the 20s (of course it is renovated ) because there are no elevators!

Room Tip: If you have a lot of luggage, ask for a room in the 1st floor.

A friend of ours recommended this hotel, so we booked it and we had a lovely stay. It's very close to the beach/ocean and only a few blocks from all the lovely, charming shops and cafes of Carmel (Mission Street/Ocean Avenue). I actually walked to them and it literally took no more than 12 minutes or so (uphill). The room was a decent size and clean, the bathroom was a little small for my taste but it is a pretty old building so it looks like they've tried to remodel it but keeping a cottage feel. The room did face the street, which was okay, although you could hear a little bit of the outside noise because the windows are not double-paned (that would be a nice upgrade if they could do that, also bc the cold air seeps in). If the rooms had a fireplace, even a small one, that would make it a bit cozier and warmer. Note there is no elevator, so do keep in mind if you are not on the first floor you will be carrying your luggage up flights of stairs. The lobby entrance is very beautiful and cozy with a large fireplace, makes you feel like you're at a lodge. The complimentary breakfast had a good variety and was very tasty, not to mention the views of the property and the ocean are stunning. The daily yummy Ghirardelli chocolates on the pillows was a nice touch; also the fact that every time we left the room and came back it seems that they had somehow turned on the heater for us, so the room was nice and warm (a very nice gesture considering it was 30-something degree weather outside).

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street might get a little bit of noise from outside (cars, people entering/leaving...

We booked this hotel through hotels.com, and stayed in a street view room. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Pluses:
-easy street parking for free, no time limit
-friendly reception
-evening wine tasting included
-convenient shuttle to/from dinner, though Ocean Ave is easy to walk to
-milk and cookies in the evening. shuttle driver put some cookies in our room in case we missed it while at dinner.
-excellent included breakfast
-good location near the ocean
-even street view room is very nice
-wifi works well

Things to know:
-can hear guests walking in the room above
-there is no hot tub

Would definitely recommend this hotel. We will stay here again in the future.

This trip was a celebration of my wife's birthday. Our 2-night stay was exceptional and beyond our expectations. We loved the unadvertised extras -- apples and cookies at the front desk, coffee/tea/sparkling water in our room, nighttime chocolate on our pillows, morning newspaper at our door, ironing board/iron in closet. We had a garden view room which was perfectly adequate. Our request for a flatter pillow was delivered immediately. But what made the biggest impression was the breakfast. In the eloquent and comfortable dinning room there was, in addition to what you'd normally expect, a variety of quality cheeses, proschutto, bread pudding, waffles, hardboiled eggs, fine pastry, cereals, yogurt, and more. It appears the same breakfast is served daily, but it did not matter as the selection was huge. We will definitely return and will recommend this inn to others.

Room Tip: Inn is in a neighborhood of homes on quiet streets. We walked to everything in Carmel from here.

We stayed there for one night on travelzoo special. Upon arrival asked for possibility of upgrade to oceanview room. The front desk staff was extremely helpful, we got upgraded, despite the fact that it was Saturday and they were busy.

Beautiful grounds, charming and tastefully decorated common areas. Our room 400 wasn't small at all. Very clean, sunny and fresh.

Apparently this hotel was remodeled recently and it shows.

Delicious breakfast buffet, little crowded around 9 am.

La Playa is an amazing hotel in a close proximity to the beach and Carmel shops and art galleries, but what impressed me and my girlfriends most, was the caring and dedicated staff. After celebrating my 50th birthday at dinner, I discovered that I lost my eating that my husband had given to me years ago for my birthday. The housekeeping staff looked for it all during my stay and the front desk staff never tired or sounded annoyed at my constant calls to ask if they had found my earing. One of the gentleman on the housekeeping staff even went through the vacuum bag to see if it was vacuumed up by accident. On my last day there, I received a call that they found it! I'm so grateful.

Also, the gardens are spectacular. The gardener took the time to give us the names of the various plants and explain why the garden does so well in Carmel.

Can't say enough! The weather in December was incredible. It was in the 70's during the day.
There is no other choice. Stay at the La Playa Carmel and you won't regret it. Thanks La Playa for a wonderful 50th birthday weekend.

Room Tip: Room 105 is right below the bar and banquet room. When a party is really going with the music, the r...

Lovely renovated old hotel. Average size room but very comfortable with ocean view in the distance, from our windows. Beautiful gardens. Great location for walking to Carmel shops and restaurants...if you don't want to walk, they have a shuttle. Excellent waffles with fruit available at breakfast.
Hotel staff is exceptionally friendly and kind.

Room Tip: Our room was on the second level, ocean side, very quiet
