“Beautiful property”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

This was a wonderful place to celebrate my sweetie’s birthday. She loves Carmel-by-the-Sea and has wanted to visit La Playa for a long time. We had eaten here a couple of times and had toured the rooms but had never stayed, so I made reservations. It really is a beautiful property. We had a garden view room high enough that we also had a view of the ocean. The room was a bit cramped, which was not a surprise considering the historical nature of the place. With anyone sitting in one of the two armchairs at the foot of the bed, the other could not pass, and we had to play a bit of musical chairs during our stay. Otherwise, the room was bright and clean, and the bathroom was quite nice. Like most Carmel hotels there is no air conditioning, but we had a nice breeze with the windows open. The breakfast was very good, and the bar food was fine, but we did miss the restaurant. The walk to the downtown area is only a couple of blocks, so eating out is no trouble, and there is a complimentary shuttle if needed. The hotel is located in a quiet residential area, and other than a few of those noisy wheeled suitcases on the brick walkways, we enjoyed the sound of the ocean from two blocks away, All the staff was friendly and efficient, and we would not hesitate to come back.

Room Tip: We always prefer upper floors (no elevators here but the bellman carry everything), and the garden o...

We spent two nights and enjoyed our stay. The hotel is a couple of blocks from the ocean and about 4 blocks to the shopping area. The evening wine tasting was fun. We paid extra for the ocean view, which was very pretty. The wait staff was very helpful. You should be aware that there are no elevators, and they really don't have dinner service, although with the restaurants to choose from nearby, I can't blame them. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Pick a room facing the ocean.

Beautful property! I picked this from other TA reviews and so happy i did. Service was excellent - Alexis at front desk very accomodating as were the rest of the staff and Oliver who shuttled us back and forth to dinner.
We enjoyed the evening wine tasting and the exceptional champagne breakfast. Our room was tastefully appointed and very comfortable. We look forward to a return visit to the LaPlaya and the beautiful Carmel-by-the-sea!

My husband and I stayed one night at La Playa for our anniversary. It was a quick trip and we really enjoyed the location and architecture of the hotel. Our room was small, but nicely appointed. From the hotel we walked to the beach, downtown and to the mission. The neighborhood is beautiful and so is the expansive white sandy beach. It was a treat to get a complementary "wine happy hour" AND full breakfast included with our room stay. The staff was really friendly and even shuttled us to dinner. My only complaints are: 1)noise in the hallways and upstairs could be heard in our room 2)bike usage wasn't free (they charge $20/bike). Other than that I think the hotel is pretty and in a great location...... Definitely a great spot to relax and enjoy Carmel.

Room Tip: If you can afford it try to get an ocean view room

My partner and I were here for her business meeting and as fate would have it we were here on our 16th anniversary. We decided to get married at the hotel on our special day.The hotel is charming, beautiful and you truly feel as if you are in a friend's exquisite home. We had an amazing suite on the 4th floor and though there was no air conditioning the room was really quite cool. Our guests arrived on Friday and Saturday for our Monday wedding. They were all well cared for by the staff and everyone knew they were with our party. We had a great time sitting in the bar, nibbling and drinking. The bartender, Jessica, was always so perfect!
The wedding itself was beautiful. The ceremony took place in the garden by the fountain. We had drinks and appetizers on the terrace and then we had a sumptuous buffet dinner in the Pacific Room. Chef Owen did an amazing job as well as the entire banquet staff. The banquet manager, Danielle, was very reassuring that everything will be perfect and it was.
We will be returning every year, on our anniversary, with some of our guests. We so enjoyed the hotel;however, the staff truly made our wedding week amazing and memorable.

Stayed at La Playa 3 nights while my husband golfed Pebble Beach. One the best hotels I have ever stayed in. Staff was great. Free shuttles from hotel to restaurants. Free wine tastings every evening. Mimosa's for breakfast every morning. Can not wait to go again! Our room had a wonderful ocean view.

Stayed here for five nights as part of a golf tour playing Pebble Beach etc. The hotel has a refined atmosphere, and is very well located equidistant between the town centre and the beach, and is handy for the golf courses. They will run free shuttles to/from the restaurants that are beyond walking distance - e.g.the marvellous Carmel Mission Inn. Location is fantastic, and if you get a sea view room, at night you will hear the Pacific ocean waves coming in and breaking on the beach. Breakfast was fabulous, and the freshly made waffles served on the patio were very tasty. On the downside, the bar menu is very limited, there is no aircon in the bedroom and the bathroom was small. Although it was expensive at 300 dollars a night, I would happily stay here again.

Room Tip: Hire a bike from the front desk and do the 17 mile drive on two wheels.
