“Blundered Into a Nice Looking Motel coming into Carmel from the north.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2014

Entering Carmel-By-The-Sea from Hiway 1, zig-zag style, on San Carlos, just caught a glimpse of Motel Rooms uphill. SLAM! REVERSE! LEFT TURN, DRIVE! "...hey, this IS a motel. End of day fatigue sets in. Try a door? - OFFICE? Ah...REGISTER. "Park Anywhere, good night,... Slam. Sound of Lock Bolt.

This was our entree' to
THE DOLPHIN INN.
27 Rooms, on 2 levels over parking.
Open and covered parking (barely enough overflow onto San Carlos days).
NO Elevator- No balconies.
Exterior Corridors, Dozens (thousands?) of steps up from parking level.
Pool (Polar Bear Type)
Continental Plus Breakfast skimpy dining area holds a handful (Guests advised/required to order night before (meals are delivered next morning - an act of faith that comes true). Just below the office/dining nook is a mystery door that opens into ....Brophy's Tavern, (a time warp reminding me of Duffy's Tavern of Old Tyme Radio). Patrons stare at we intruders but there is no avoiding that. (Unless you want to run down the 30 degree driveway).

Once out, the Carmel we remember envelops us and we were able to spend the whole day plagueing inoffensive (but hopeful) artists.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms around the pool. We liked the top floor units but my partner has 2 hip transplants...

I just loved staying at Dolphin Inn. The rooms were so cosy and very clean.Carmel is such a beautiful town and I would definitely recommend the Dolphin Inn. We had to be on the road very early the next morning and our breakfast was delivered at our door the night before, great service! The Dolphin Inn will definitely see us again!

I have been staying at the Dolphin when I visit Carmel for the past 15 years plus. I have also stayed at several others for various reasons through the years. I always come back to The Dophin. I have seen the Inn getting better all the time. They have recently up graded their beds and bedding and carpeting and it is really nice. The staff and service couldn't be more friendly and helpful. There is a hopping sports bar right there that is fun and serves up a great hamburger. Another plus is it's location. Just a block or two up from the village. Great morning walk down Ocean Ave to the beach. I love it and highly recommend it.

Room Tip: I personally always stay in one of the room over the car port. Sometimes you can hear a little noise...

A great location near shops at a reasonable price. The bedding is wonderful. The shower was great and the room was very clean. This is a regular stop for me while staying in Carmel. I would recommend this place for the price alone.

We stayed here for three days before going to San Francisco and enjoyed it so much we returned for 2 days more a week later. Not fancy but clean and staff is very nice. They were helpful in suggesting restaurants to suit our tastes and we would stay there again on our next trip.
The only complaint was there internet service was iffy.

We recently stayed at the Dolphin Inn in November , 2013, our son and his wife, our grand kids live about a mile up the hill from here. This was our first experience staying an a local b and b , as they are renovating their home, and we welcomed the opportunity to enjoy a bit of space, and also a location close to Carmel for the shops and the restaurants..........yet we were enjoyably close to our family and that was our first priority! Ok first and foremost............we arrived local time 11 pm., eastern time from our Sarasota, Florida time zone this was 2 am after a work day............ok yes we are still working!!! Dolphin Inn closes prior to the arrival time yet, we were so happy that they confirmed our room, and told us where the key would be so when we did arrive, we opened the door, and Ricky, the attendant who told us where the key would be, had so kindly, turned on the fireplace, and the bedroom was so welcoming we just melted into the bed! The bed, a king, was comfortable, and linens so clean, so wonderful, it was just what was needed after a night of travel that was ............not horrible.........but long and tiring, after a day of work for both of us!! We arrived, and we mentioned it was our 41st anniversary, we were going to Carmel to see our grandkids, ages 6, and 4, yet we hoped for some solitude and quiet for just us, and when we arrived, the fireplace on, the bed so welcoming, a bottle of wine and some snacks..................what a gift! We could have cried, it was so wonderful to have a few moments to relax and it was COLD in carmel compared to our local Sarasota Weather!! We loved the Dolphin Inn . It is an older place, not fancy........quiet, yes and that was first and foremost for us! We spent most of our time at our family' s home a mile away in Carmel........at night we would return, enjoyed the peace and quiet here. Our room was clean, neat, new carpet, the bathroom was very small, and there could be improvements here, as it was quite dated, but it was very clean and to us that was all that mattered........We had a rickety armoire that we used for our clothes, but that needs to go! Just get a cheap one at Target or Pier ONE forget the ambience of the antiques, just get a new one please!! My husband has sleep apnea, and uses a BIPAP machine, and there was not a plug nearby to the bed......so that is why we are giving only 4 stars, because it is useful to have electrical support for those who are medically compromised. However, the cleanliness, and the friendliness of Ricky and the housekeeping team , really made our trip ..........We look forward to spending time here again.....We had a glimpse of the ocean from our room # 23..... not a great view, but we were mostly at our son's home up the street! Our time was precious ( a long weekend) and it was for us important to see our grand children, so we did not explore the area, but there are some great places within walking distance, and in particular I want to mention the Village Corner, where we enjoyed breakfast, and have also in the past, multiple times........deilcious! Also the Dolphin provides a continental breakfast each day in a cooler outside the room........we enjoyed fresh fruit, cereal, yogurt, croissants, or bagels, and this was another great feature of staying here. Also, we were pleasantly surprised, one night but we found out later, every night, or afternoon, they provide fresh cookies in the lobby.....we happened to find this on our last night as I was providing our credit card and my grand children were with me, and the woman at the desk went into the refrig and offered them cookies and candy which they devoured happily! What a pleasant surprise!! Thank you Dolphin Inn, we had a great stay! If any improvements are needed here it is just updating, not any negative remarks.....We look forward to staying again, everything is close by....handy and it is a smaller place, so that makes it very special

Room Tip: Upstairs you might get a room with a view of the ocean although it is not close to the ocean. We sta...

I have had the distinct pleasure of staying at the Dolphin Inn in Carmel, California very recently.
The staff were very pleasant, knowledgeable and professional. They were also very helpful. My rooms were always very tidy and exceptionally well cared for. All in all my stays at the Dolphin Inn have been top notch always. It has become my home away from home!! I stayed here as recently as November and December 2013. I must not forget to mention the breakfast and newspaper which were delivered to the door of my room!!!

Room Tip: I like the rooms with a fireplace.I always ask for #22 or #23
