“Incomparable hotel / resort!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

I spent two nights at Carmel Valley Ranch with my girlfriend and parents. We had set the trip up as a family vacation, and they made every minute of it extremely enjoyable. Upon pulling up onto the lobby/main building, we were immediately greeted by the valets and a pack of wild turkeys. The valet coaxed them back over toward us so we could say hello.

All the staff were very personable and friendly, and suggested some excellent wineries in an area of California we weren't very accustomed to.

Although Carmel Valley Ranch is on a very large piece of property, both our room and the main building with concierge/front desk/restaurant and bar were very close, so the only time things were far from us was when we felt like hiking or exploring.

The rooms were like the most decadent cabin hotel room. They were HUGE, with tall vaulted ceilings. Gas fireplaces in both the living room and bed room, and a private deck where we sipped Keurig cocoa and tea and watched deer and cute little birds in the mornings. The beds were so comfortable, including our sofa bed. The bath ammenties are even more glamorous than other Joie de Vivre properties, and I think perhaps they featured lavender from the property? The tubs also were exctraordinarily big and deep, sooo nice after a day out. The only small suggestion I would make would be to add more glassware and plateware. Our group of 4 had only 4 mugs, no wine glasses or plates, but the staff was quick to address this.

The property also features hikes, tons of fields of lavender, vineyard, organic garden (soo cool to explore, and there was a great variet of crops even in the Winter), and beekeeping (was closed when we were there). The bar also made some exceptional cocktails, much better than I'd expect. No one was pretentious or uppity.

All four of us really enjoyed our trip to Carmel Valley Ranch, and are so greatful they made our weekend of family time perfect.

We tried the Carmel Valley Ranch before the renovations...the room was musty and old, the service was terrible (I had the Do Not Disturb sign on and the maid went around to my balcony and yelled up at our open door to see if I wanted service). We come to Carmel at least once or twice a year to visit family and weren't happy with the Tickle Pink, so decided to give CVR one more try...SO GLAD we did! Everything about it has changed--the rooms are beautiful and the staff is so wonderful and well-trained. The spa is lovely, our massages were so relaxing. The food in the restaurant is top-notch and the service is fantastic. I accidentally left my clothes in the closet and anxiously called the hotel when I got home. Not only did they Fedex everything to me the next day, but everything was there, down to the garment bag and hangers. I can't think of a better, more beautiful place to stay.

Room Tip: Frankly, we haven't had a bad room. We were disappointed that we didn't get a suite, but it...

This resort has it all! I cannot say enough good things about the physical layout, its offerings, and the settings / landscape. But the real jewel in the crown is the friendly, helpful, and genuine service every staff member shows to the guests. Zach Waxer (manager), Tim Wood (chef), Melanie (assistant manager), and others are fabulous leaders of this fabulous resort. The food is memorable and better than many of the area "notable" restaurants (e.g., see my review of Pacific's Edge). The "bee experience" is amazing! Carmel Valley Ranch has its own bee keeper, John, who leads guests through a wonderful interactive experience, amazing for kids and adults alike. This property attends to children very nicely, but doesn't compromise the adult experience at all. If you asked me, 'What was poor or lacking at this property?' I would be hard pressed to tell you anything substantial. Do yourself a huge favor and stay here!!

Carmel Valley Ranch has it all great golf, wonderful pool, and excellent staff. Everything here is top notch. The rooms and the staff are what keep us coming back. We always choose to stay close to the pool and restaurant but, the property is large and have more rooms over looking the golf corse and the valley. All the rooms are large and modern with great porches on all of them! We love to come here play golf, swim, and eat great food. Can't wait to return!

The grounds of this resort are breathtaking. Waking up to the sunrise in Camel Valley was just superb.

Our cabin was luxurious, spacious, with great stone work, a beautiful fire place, and great bathroom. The amenities of the hotel include a gorgeous pool, hot tub, a fire pit, and a fantastic fitness center. They offer classes at the recreational center every day, and smores on the fire pit at night.

The restaurant is also fantastic. Impeccable presentation, clean tastes, and delicious cocktails.

The whole experience was wonderful from check-in top check-out. Highly recommended!

I just visited at Carmel Valley Ranch for the third time. I've been there once as a personal trip and twice on business off-sites.

As a business off-site location it has multiple advantages: it is easy to get to from San Francisco and not far from LA; the rooms are luxurious and have great wi-fi access; the meeting rooms are well set-up and the climate and setting makes one on one privacy easy to find. The opportunity for golf, tennis etc is also great. At our most recent off-site we did a cooking event which the hotel laid on with the Executive chef and brought a smile to even the most cynical members of our party.

On our personal trip we loved the serenity, the luxury, the spa and the fabulous tennis facilities.

A great place to get your zen back!

Spent a night here on a drive up the coast highway. Took their largest suite on the hilltop. For the price the room was EXCELLENT - huge rooms. Service generally good - had to wait quite a while for room to be ready. Loved being driven around in the golf carts. Staff very nice with it being my birthday - free bottle of champagne and chocolate strawberries waiting in the room. Great bathroom products in the room made from the lavendar they grow on site.

Restaurant was OK, not incredible menu or servers but worked well.

Overall very nice - not incredible but nice. I could see this being an AMAZING hotel for families (lots of family activities, well priced rooms) - they even had smores outside round a fire!

Room Tip: Suites are very priced and very large for families. Request the hilltop!

Thank you for your review. Your comments are taken to heart, as it appears we missed a great opportunity to bring The Ranch to life for you. “Nice” is not bad, but falls short of what we hope to provide during your experience here. Remarkable, unforgettable, and “can’t wait to return” are more along the lines of what we strive for! And while we are adored by families as you mentioned, there are m any romantic touch points across the property that I regret were not communicated to you. For the sake of your return visit, which I hope you will consider, let me illustrate what we do offer our guests ‘sans’ children. Located on nearly 500 acres, it is possible to ‘co-exist’ with all kinds of travelers and feel truly in a place all your own. From our private couple’s suite at Spa Aiyana – designed with romantic couples massage in mind, to our adults-only pool and hot tub overlooking the vineyard and Valley, to leisurely strolls through our organic garden, a yoga class, tennis or round of golf, or just relaxing together on your private balcony with Room Service dinner – there are many experiences to be enjoyed as a romantic couple or individual traveler at the resort. I am pleased you had a good time here, but truly hope we have the opportunity to make it much more memorable in the future. Sincerely, Melanie Cooke, Director of Revenue
