“Fabulous weekend escape with one caveat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

This would've been 5 stars acroos the board if it weren't for a ridiculously bad experience with room service. First, the good: the property and rooms are beautiful, well maintained, great location in the valley (only 10 minutes to Carmel, so easy in and out) There's something for everyone- couples wanting a romantic getaway, excellent spa, hiking on site and nearby, lovely pools, and entire program for kids (not intrusive if that's not your thing). Lunch in the restaurant was very good. Front desk, Valet, Bell service excellent.

We did order room service lunch and the service was unbelievably bad. We had to call five times and each time the phone rang 10-15 times. The person answering the phone was clearly having a bad day. We asked for a bottle opener and were told to look in all the drawers. Very helpful. The orders- very simple chicken and a burger- were wrong and lacking requested condiments. Not a big deal, unless it takes over 30 minutes to get the correct condiments. Dont know if they're understaffed, but they should cancel room service rather than deliver this kind of experience.

Other than that, highly recommend Carmel Valley Ranch!

831-625-9500, Manager at Carmel Valley Ranch, responded to this review, January 25, 2013
Thank you so much for your review. I have to admit, the reviews with "caveats" or "great resort BUT...." are always the most challenging to respond to. Quite frankly, your review is fair: your Room Service experience was far from what we aim to provide, and it presents many opportunities to improve on the basics. I would love to attribute your experience to the challenges of delivering food throughout a 500-acre resort, but in this case, I truly can't. Your challenges were service-based, and I sincerely apologize for falling short. As a manager who has worked here from the beginning of our transformation more than three years ago, I know that our team members are caring and genuine, and that upon reading your review, will endeavor to ensure that we are even more aware of how our responses through moments like yours can define the memories our guests take home. It is why the quality of our team is among our most-praised attributes on TripAdvisor. Because your review acknowledged so much of what is positive and wonderful about The Ranch, I know we will be welcoming you back again. Please reach out to me personally when you return, as I will ensure you are served with the graciousness that you deserve. Melanie Cooke, Director of Revenue

This place is beautiful and the rooms are cozy with nice fireplaces and great views. The restaurant food quality is great although the service is a tad slow and the menu limited. The service is where this place shines. From check in to check out, the staff could not be more accomodating and they really do go the extra mile to make your stay enjoyable. The only mishap we encountered was with housekeeping who seemed to forget little details. One of our rooms lacked slippers, another had towels missing one day, another day toilet paper was not restocked. All in all, little things but in comparison with the service throughout the rest of the resort, they could use a little training. Overall though, I would definitely return and highly recommend this property for friends, couples, and families.

Room Tip: Not much difference between the garland and ranch suite other than an additional fireplace so if mon...

A very relaxing couple of days at this beautiful property. The rooms are well appointed, and very spacious. The king size bed in our room was so comfortable, we slept late each morning. We hiked and took long walks on the grounds, hung out by one of several fire pits in the evening. We enjoyed the smores one afternoon, what a fun treat. The adult only pool area is very nice for those of us parents traveling without our kids and want peace and quiet. Overall a wonderful location, you can't go wrong.

We've stayed here twice. Once as a couple and the second time as a family. Both times were wonderful. The food is amazing and the rooms are incredible.

When with family, we did the 'Bee Experience' which the kids loved. We also spent a great deal of time hanging out at the lower, family-friendly pool which has great drinks and food and plenty for the kids to do.

We stay at the Ojai Valley Inn often and you can tell that some of the management used to work at this property. The look and feel is similar and the quality is outstanding. However, if you're in it for the spa experience, I don't think this property will ever match up but I do think the family pool area is much better.

We loved where the property was located. It was so calm and after a few days in Disneyland it was an oasis. We loved our rooms and it would have been nice if they had radiant heated floors because the floors were cold. The spa was nice. The grounds were magnificent. The Kids offerings were Fantastic. The reception and other helpers were terrific except for the some of the wait staff. They were slow and they didn't think to bring out things that you needed. Such as cream & sugar with the coffee and other things like that. Some of the Wait staff were Fabulous too. But for the price of the food the wait staff should all be at least very good. We did enjoy our selves and it was the perfect way to end our week in California.

My husband and I took our two kids and my inlaws for a three-day stay. The ranch is located on a beautiful piece of property with enough to keep everyone busy for three days. We took advantage of hiking on the property and offsite, visited with some bees at the ranch (very fun for the kids) and played a lot of tennis. The instructors at the tennis facility were great with adults and kids and made the hour pass so quickly. A few issues: service was slow at the restaurant and for room service. Also, we had to keep asking for items at the restaurant (salt/pepper/ketchup/syrup). These were things that should have just been given to us automatically but we had to ask at every meal over and over and over again. And please add some qtips to your rom offerings! I don't even think to pack them anymore since hotels always have them.

We've been here twice now, and this place is exactly what I love for a mini trip - it's tranquil, isolated, and has some amazing service. The place is situated within a giant, gated community with both private homes and the ranch, and it really feels like you've left the troubles of home behind. It's quiet, you have areas for certain types of families (i.e. with young kids, or couples, or with dogs), and the staff is top notch - every single person we've ever interacted with, whether it's turn down service, room service, folks at the Lodge, the bellmen - all phenomenal. The staff really works to make your visit as uninterrupted and comfortable as possible. The spa is top notch (have had two massages there) and plenty of golf for those who are into it.

Case in point - we were recently housed in the area where they usually place folks with dogs (this is the 300+ room numbers), and we were next to a room where the owners had clearly left their dog in the room and gone out somewhere. The dog was howling and very unhappy. It was really noisy, so we requested a room change. Within 30 minutes we were moved, no questions asked, and a bellman came to help us move our luggage.

The menu for room service is limited but really delicious - everything from the breakfast sandwiches with farm fresh eggs, to the kids meals that include grilled cheese sandwiches and fries.

The rooms have warm fireplaces, are clean, and tastefully decorated. There aren't sweeping views necessarily, but you can usually see the hill sides, golf course, or tree tops.

Pros: Clean, excellent service, dog friendly, isolated, in room fireplaces
Cons: Because they're super dog friendly, and they group you according to your family type, you can expect some noise. Can be rather pricey if you book last minute.
