“Awesome Wedding and Great Resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2011

Spent three days at Carmel Valley Ranch for a wedding in September. Could not have asked for more! I visited this hotel for a family reunion about two years ago, but the property has only improved.

Since our last visit, the rooms have all been upgraded. Every room has a scenic balcony with great views (ours overlooked the golf course and the valley). The beds were very comfortable and equipped with a fireplace and a flat screen TV. The bathrooms are enormous and top of the line. I was particularly impressed with the little touches that they got right... delivering the NY Times to your room every morning, a complementary snack basket, decent coffee in the room.

The main lodge has also been updated. A nice restaurant and bar area. A significantly upgraded adult pool and hot tub and adjoining spa. (My wife spent a day in the spa and really enjoyed it). There is also a separate area at the bottom of the hill that has a family pool, basketball court, several tennis courts, and bocce.

The staff is probably the best part of this hotel. Always friendly and helpful from the minute you arrive... sitting you down, discussing how they can help, giving you an overview of the property and activities. The property is huge, but every time I called for a shuttle to take me somewhere they arrived within 5 mins.

We stayed at this property with our children and a few other families. The actual room was amazing. It was very private with a living room and separate bedroom. The rooms look to be totally redone and are very modern and beautifully appointed with dark hardwood floors, a keurig coffee maker in room, and a modern spacious bathroom.

The separate children's pool area with tennis and gym were wonderful. I highly recommend the poolside grill - great food at a reasonable price - we ate here often throughout our stay. The only downside is the lack of poolside service. You have to go inside to order. Would be better if they had outside wait service. Additionally, watch out for the birds - they attacked our food each time by the pool. Our kids had a wonderful day by the pool though.

Loved the FREE childcare each night up at the lodge for kids 5 and over. You have to stay on the property, but that was a HUGE perk. We sat by the firepits by the beautiful adult pool area almost every evening and the free s'mores were a huge plus in the evening.

The only downside to this resort is that everything is very spreadout. We had to get in the car to go down to the kids pool or to the lodge. There are carts that can take you, but it was easier to just jump in the car. Nothing is walkable so it isn't like a typical resort where you can just walk out of your room and everything is right there. With kids, this was a bit of a pain at times.

The lodge is located near Carmel downtown, though it is a 10 to 15 min drive. You are not near the beach and other attractions, though with all there is to do on the property, you can enjoy yourself without having to leave.

A great venue to escape and recharge. We had a "ranch king" suite near the pool and restaurant but still had a wonderful sunset view. The food in the restaurant is excellent and well priced for Carmel. You are located midway between Carmel-By-The-Sea and Carmel Village on Carmel Valley Ranch Road. this is a great location but requires a drive to see all the sights. Our room was splendid; service and accommodations were truly 5 star.

Very nice room, great pool, gracious staff but it is quite pricey. Otherwise a great stay.

Rooms: recently renovated. We stayed in a Garland Suite and felt we were at our own little condo/ town house. Quiet. Could watch deer on the golf course from our room. No complaint re: room, however the short fall was with the cleaning. The maids forgot to replenish the coffee two of the five days and did not remove used wine glasses. Towels were replaced though. Not up to the standard for the price as far as the daily room service.

Restaurants/ Food: Our service at the restaurant, the cafe and pool side service was fantastic. Even the new staff did very well. Everyone was pleasant, service great, food prepared well. No complaints - and we are food snobs. On our last morning, my husband was adding a tip to the yogurt and granola cup he bought after a work out and was told that a 20% tip is added to all food bills by guests. We aren't sure if this was the case, but if so, we tipped well as we also added 20-25% on at the restaurants.I would ask about this before you stay.

Activities: One of the reasons I chose this place was because of the daily FREE golf clinics. Unfortunately, these were all cancelled while we were there due to private golf functions. These things happen. However, I was not aware that Tennis was extra ($25/hour). It would have been nice to have this expense excused seeing as the golf was cancelled. The golf course is beautiful and not busy. I am a novice and was not intimidated to golf here. Nobody was behind us. Great course.TRX class was fun.

LAND ROVER OFF ROAD SCHOOL - which we purchased with a bundle - can be bought separately through Quail Lodge/ Quail Golf which is 5 minutes away. This was our highlight. Our instructor was Lamont - who was fabulous. In addition to being a fun way to spend the afternoon, it is very informative, even if you don't own your own Land Rover. The skills can transfer over to winter driving! This is a must do if you are in the area. My husband and I both enjoyed it very much.

SPA: expensive and a little limited. I very much enjoyed the lady who did my pedicure. However, maybe because we were chatting so much, she did not file my heels at all (the main reason I go for pedicures) When booking my appointment I was warned that a 20% tip was added.

We have stayed here several times over the last 10 years. Our first time many years ago was fabulous but we had lost interest the last time we stayed because it had a "tired" look and the hotel looked like the owners had lost interest in keeping it up.

We just decided to try it again after reading about new ownership and a major remodel. We loved it more than we thought we would and had a great time. The service was wonderful and all of the staff made an effort to be helpful. The lavender fields, beehive area and organic garden were delightful as well as the pool and cabana area. The ability to use the larger fitness and pool area just down the road was a nice plus. Several exercise/yoga classes were tried as well as a game of bocce ball and a round of golf.

The room assigned to us was lovely but had a large oak tree blocking any view. That would be nice for privacy but we wanted some light and were graciously given an identical room with a lovely view. The rooms were very large and comfortable with lovely details and comfortable bedding. I loved it that the minifridge was left empty for us to use for our own snacks and drinks as we enjoyed sitting on our balcony and having wine and cheese. They were happy to bring wineglasses to our room.

We never left the Ranch as we had plenty to enjoy during our 3 days/2 nights and had already seen Carmel on past trips. We will return again when we need another relaxing retreat. They do add a resort fee each day to cover all tips (excluding meals) and we like this feature as we then did not need to carry around cash everywhere we went.

Room Tip: Ask what the view will be - some look out over parking lots instead of the valley.
