“Can't Believe this is a Comfort Inn”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2011

After driving around for hours, and getting completed hosed by another nearby hotel who had "confirmed" our reservation (Sandpiper Inn), we arrived, completely exhausted, at the Comfort Inn. We were greeted with top notch service by two welcoming hosts at the front, one of whom absolutely insisted that we take a piece of fruit or have some tea to refresh from the road.

The room rate was extremely reasonable, the rooms were clean, and breakfast was even included. What struck me is that this is much more upscale than your traditional Comfort Inn, and with that in mind I have to say that this is a great hotel for the price (it is also very family friendly). Very close to the heart of Carmel with a very lovely and welcoming staff. Totally worth it.

We stayed here in the middle of October 2011 and were pleasantly surprised by the nice, incredibly clean and modern room that awaited us. Parking could be a bit tricky as the lot is small, but there were plenty of spots around noon. We arrived early and were quickly checked in by a very courteous and friendly woman at the front desk. The breakfast was simple but just what we needed, and we took advantage of the outdoor area to eat.

The only wrinkle was the 6:00 am delivery at the market right outside our window. Nothing some earplugs couldn't remedy.

All things considered, I would highly recommend this hotel for the money and location.

We were a little surprised by the fact that there was no air conditioning, but the weather was so mild that we were very comfortable. The "cottage-style" of the inn fit in great with the Carmel scene and we loved the flowers and little courtyard. All the restaurants, art galleries and shops were within walking distance. The only thing I didn't like was that other patrons were smoking on the patio outside our room and the smell traveled through our open windows. A smoking area away from guest rooms would be better.

We had booked ahead, thinking Carmel would be an ideal place to rest during a long active trip to California. We checked out the next morning, and went to Monterey, to a much cheaper and much superior hotel (Best Western). Three things, primarily: 1) we had asked for a quiet room on our booking form, and were told by the manager's wife (I think) that all the rooms were quiet. I doubt any are: the walls are incredibly thin, and you can hear most of what's going on next door (and downstairs). But ours had the added attraction of being one of two which overlooks a parking lot where trucks unload for a supermarket. At 5.15 in the morning we were awake. It's not that the managers are unaware of this of course -- we were told by the same woman that they're not supposed to do it till 7 a.m.(!!) So she knew what she was doing putting us in this "quiet" room. We hardly touched the unappetising breakfast, we were so anxious to get out. 2) We had chosen the hotel partly because it advertised that there was parking space -- there is, but not enough, and on entry one is confronted with a notice telling you that there is further public parking on the street. Fine, but why not inform prospective guests on the Internet? Because it might put them off? 3) When we got there, I handed over my credit card, to be told it wasn't working, with an air (from the same woman) of distrust. She agreed to use my debit card on departure (we'd booked 5 nights, but stayed one). The fact remains that it worked in every other place (5 or 6) that we stayed, both before and after this lamentable experience -- it never seemed to occur to the woman that their machine might be at fault, which it plainly was. In fact, I'd stay clear of Carmel and go to Monterey, less pretentious and more peaceful. But don't go here!

Room Tip: Go to Monterey.

Reserved a King room; it was listed as having a refrig & microwave, both of which were not in room. Hot breakfast consisted of small yellow frisbee looking eggs and I think sausage patties--did not eat either. The egg white part of the hard boiled eggs were very hard, rubber like texture. I was looking forward to making my usual hot waffle--VERY DISAPPOINTED! The batter was VERY watery--I've had these at many Choice Hotels, Best Westerns and other hotels, so I know what the consistency the batter SHOULD BE--I tried one and left it--had no flavor. I played it safe and ate an english muffin. On a positive note, the room was clean and bathroom had been remodeled and was a nice size; had a flat screen TV. This is an older building and rooms are not as big as the newer Choice Hotels, these are like a Motel 6 size. Walls are thin and you can hear voices in next room; parking is a little tricky in the small area near office; most of parking is on the street. Positive note: it is RIGHT IN TOWN, so you can walk to all shops/restaurants.

Room Tip: Get an upstairs room; building has 2 floors.

I have stayed in Carmel many times over the years and have often wondered what this hotel was like. It is charming. Located right at the start of the town, this establishment is cozy and well kept. Staff is polite and rooms are updated and clean. Plantings reflect an understanding of the area and the whole place blends in well with its surroundings. Susie runs the front desk and she also provides a great breakfast that is included in the price of your room. I have had many experiences staying in places within Camel, some better than others...this is definitely one of the better ones. As for cost....the price is very reasonable.
